In this paper, an automatic extraction of the blood flow contour from cardiac MRI is proposed. By using the GVF snake which has wider capture range than the conventional snake, and by automatically generating the initial points along the outside of the contour of the zero GVF field in the edge image of the cardiac MRI, the blood flow contour can be automatically extracted, even when the contours have boundary concavities due to the papillary muscles, without any manual initialization of the experts. Experiments are conducted on the various real cardiac MRIs including noise and papillary muscles, and the proposed method is proved to be efficient in automatic extraction of the blood contours even if they have the boundary concavities.

This paper used an active contour model which was based on level set algorithms and bidirectional curve evolution theory in order to track the shape of the heart acting continuously. Most active contour models would be failed in boundary extraction because of their unstable movement in the edge gap locations. In this paper, we suggest a new active contour model using only image intensity value and additional constraint needed for stable extraction. Our model was successfully run on either shape extraction or object tracking without any position constraints of initial curve. Also demonstrated stable movements and showed good results at weak or missing boundary locations.
Building extraction is one of the essential issues for 3D city modelling. In recent years, high-resolution satellite imagery has become widely available and it brings new methodology for urban mapping. In this paper, we have developed a semi-automatic algorithm to determine building heights from monoscopic high-resolution satellite data. The algorithm is based on the analysis of the projected shadow and actual shadow of a building. Once two roof comer points are measured manually, the algorithm detects (rectangular) roof boundary automatically. Then it estimates a building height automatically by projecting building shadow onto the image for a given building height, counting overlapping pixels between the projected shadow and actual shadow, and finding the height that maximizes the number of overlapping pixels. Once the height and roof boundary are available, the footprint and a 3D wireframe model of a building can be determined. The proposed algorithm is tested with IKONOS images over Deajeon city and the result is compared with the building height determined by stereo analysis. The accuracy of building height extraction is examined using standard error of estimate.

The study is to automatically or semi-automatically detect the accurate contour of tumors or lesions using active contour models (Snakes) in the MRI images of the brain. In the study we have improved the energy-minimization problem of snakes using dynamic programming and have utilized the values of the canny edge detector by the image force to make the snake less sensitive in noises. For the extracted boundary, the inside area, the perimeter and its center coordinates could be calculated. In addition, the multiple 2D slices with the contour of the lesion wore combined to visualized the shape of the lesion in 3D. We expect that the proposed method in this paper will be useful to make a treatment plan as well as to evaluate the treatments.
Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in men and is a major cause of mortality in the most of countries. In many diagnostic and treatment procedures for prostate disease accurate detection of prostate boundaries in transrectal ultrasound(TRUS) images is required. This is a challenging and difficult task due to weak prostate boundaries, speckle noise and the short range of gray levels. In this paper a method for automatic prostate segmentation in TRUS images using Gabor feature extraction and snake-like contour is presented. This method involves preprocessing, extracting Gabor feature, training, and prostate segmentation. The speckle reduction for preprocessing step has been achieved by using stick filter and top-hat transform has been implemented for smoothing the contour. A Gabor filter bank for extraction of rotation-invariant texture features has been implemented. A support vector machine(SVM) for training step has been used to get each feature of prostate and nonprostate. Finally, the boundary of prostate is extracted by the snake-like contour algorithm. A number of experiments are conducted to validate this method and results showed that this new algorithm extracted the prostate boundary with less than 10.2% of the accuracy which is relative to boundary provided manually by experts.

In this study boundary velocity which is one of the important boundary conditions for numerical simulation for subway station on fire are experimentally obtained. The tests were conducted according to its operating mode of the ventilation systems in the platform: smoke extraction ventilation mode in occurrence of fire and normal ventilation mode for air conditioning. Velocities are measured at various points on the platform. To examine smoke extraction and air supply capacity in the platform level, air velocities were checked on opening vents. Numerical analysis under normal ventilation mode without fire is conducted by using measured boundary conditions, and the numerical results are compared with the measured velocities on the platform.

Extraction of the coastal boundary is important because the boundary serves as a reference in the demarcation of maritime zones such as territorial sea, contiguous zone, and exclusive economic zone. Accurate nautical charts also depend on well established, accurate, consistent, and current coastline delineation. However, to identify the precise location of the coastal boundary is a difficult task due to tidal and wave motions. This paper presents an efficient way to extract coastlines by applying digital image processing techniques to Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Over the past few years, satellite-based SAR and high resolution airborne SAR images have become available, and SAR has been evaluated as a new mapping technology. Using remotely sensed data gives benefits in several aspects, especially SAR is largely unaffected by weather constraints, is operational at night time over a large area, and provides high contrast between water and land areas. Various image processing techniques including region growing, texture-based image segmentation, local entropy method, and refinement with image pyramid were implemented to extract the coastline in this study. Finally, the results were compared with existing coastline data derived from aerial photographs.

It is essential and fundamental to extract boundary information of target object via massive three-dimensional point data acquired from laser scanner. Especially extracting boundary information of manmade features such as buildings is quite important because building is one of the major components consisting complex contemporary urban area, and has artificially defined shape. In this research, extended ${\chi}$-algorithm using geometry information of point data was proposed to extract boundary information of building from three-dimensional point data consisting building. The proposed algorithm begins with composing Delaunay triangulation process for given points and removes edges satisfying specific conditions process. Additionally, to make whole boundary extraction process efficient, we used Sweep-hull algorithm for constructing Delaunay triangulation. To verify the performance of the proposed extended ${\chi}$-algorithm, we compared the proposed algorithm with Encasing Polygon Generating Algorithm and ${\alpha}$-Shape Algorithm, which had been researched in the area of feature extraction. Further, the extracted boundary information from the proposed algorithm was analysed against manually digitized building boundary in order to test accuracy of the result of extracting boundary. The experimental results showed that extended ${\chi}$-algorithm proposed in this research proved to improve the speed of extracting boundary information compared to the existing algorithm with a higher accuracy for detecting boundary information.
In the field of dynamic measurement and structural damage identification, it is generally known that modal frequencies may be measured with higher accuracy than mode shapes. However, the number of natural frequencies within a measurable range is limited. Accessing additional forms of modal frequencies is thus desirable. The present study is concerned about the extraction of artificial boundary condition (ABC) frequencies from modal testing. The ABC frequencies correspond to the natural frequencies of the structure with a perturbed boundary condition, but they can be extracted from processing the frequency response functions (FRF) measured in a specific configuration from the structure in its existing state without the need of actually altering the physical support condition. This paper presents a comprehensive experimental investigation into the measurability of the ABC frequencies from physical experiments. It covers the testing procedure through modal testing, the data processing and data analysis requirements, and the FRF matrix operations leading to the extraction of the ABC frequencies. Specific sources of measurement errors and their effects on the accuracy of the extracted ABC frequencies are scrutinised. The extracted ABC frequencies are subsequently applied in the damage identification in beams by means of finite element model updating. Results demonstrate that it is possible to extract the first few ABC frequencies from the modal testing for a variety of artificial boundary conditions incorporating one or two virtual pin supports, and the inclusion of ABC frequencies enables the identification of structural damages without the need to involve the mode shape information.
We propose a new building detection and description algorithm for Lidar data and photogrammetric imagery using color segmentation, line segments matching, perceptual grouping. Our algorithm consists of two steps. In the first step, from the initial building regions extracted from Lidar data and the color segmentation results from the photogrammetric imagery, we extract coarse building boundaries based on the Lidar results with split and merge technique from aerial imagery. In the secondstep, we extract precise building boundaries based on coarse building boundaries and edges from aerial imagery using line segments matching and perceptual grouping. The contribution of this algorithm is that color information in photogrammetric imagery is used to complement collapsed building boundaries obtained by Lidar. Moreover, linearity of the edges and construction of closed roof form are used to reflect the characteristic of man-made object. Experimental results on multisensor data demonstrate that the proposed algorithm produces more accurate and reliable results than Lidar sensor.
