Seismic modeling is used to simulate wave propagation in the earth. Although the earth's subsurface is usually semi-infinite, we cannot handle the semi-infinite model in seismic modeling because of limited computational resources. For this reason, we usually assume a finite-sized model in seismic modeling. In that case, we need to eliminate the edge reflections arising from the artificial boundaries introducing a proper boundary condition. In this study, we changed three kinds of boundary conditions (sponge boundary condition, Clayton and Engquist's absorbing boundary condition, and Higdon's transparent boundary condition) so that they can be applied in elastic wave modeling for anisotropic media. We then apply them to several models whose Poisson's ratios are different. Clayton and Engquist's absorbing boundary condition is unstable in both isotropic and anisotropic media, when Poisson's ratio is large. This indicates that the absorbing boundary condition can be applied in anisotropic media restrictively. Although the sponge boundary condition yields good results for both isotropic and anisotropic media, it requires too much computational memory and time. On the other hand, Higdon's transparent boundary condition is not only inexpensive, but also reduce reflections over a wide range of incident angles. We think that Higdon's transparent boundary condition can be a method of choice for anisotropic media, where Poisson's ratio is large.
This paper presents how redevelopment of the boundary layer in a backward-facing step flow is affected by boundary conditions imposed on velocity at the inlet, top and exit of the flow. A two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible flow over a backward-facing step with an open top boundary has been computed by using numerical methods of second-order time and spatial accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees a divergence-free velocity field at all time. The inlet velocity profile above the step is of Blasius type. Along the top boundary, shear-tree and Dirichlet conditions on the streamwise velocity were considered and at the exit fully-developed and convective boundary conditions were examined. (The vertical velocity at all boundaries were assumed to be zero explicitly or implicitly.) From the computed flow fields, the reattachment on the bottom side of shear layer separated from the tip of the step and succeeding redevelopment of the boundary layer were investigated.

In this paper, a three-dimensional non-hydrostatic pressure model for free surface flows using a normalized vertical coordinate system is presented. To strongly couple the free surface and non-hydrostatic pressure in the momentum equations, a double predictor-corrector method is employed. This research is especially focused on implementing the dynamic boundary condition (a zero pressure condition) at the free surface. This boundary condition can be specified accurately with a small modification to existing models. Numerical results with and without this modification clearly show that a precise implementation of the dynamic boundary condition is paramountly important.

The wave-propagation phenomenon in an infinite medium has been used to describe the physics in many fields of engineering and natural science. Analytical or numerical methods have been developed to obtain solutions to problems related to the wave-propagation phenomenon. Energy radiation into infinite regions must be accurately considered for accurate solutions to these problems; hence, various numerical and mechanical models as well as boundary conditions have been developed. This paper proposes a new boundary condition that can be applied to scalar-wave or horizontally-polarized shear-wave (or SH-wave) propagation problems in layered waveguides. A governing equation is obtained for the SH waves by applying finite-element discretization in the vertical direction of the waveguide and subsequently modified to derive the boundary condition for the infinite region of the waveguide. Using the orthogonality of the eigenmodes for the SH waves in a layered waveguide, the new boundary condition is shown to be equivalent to the existing root-finding absorbing boundary condition; further, the accuracy is shown to increase with the degree of the new boundary condition, and its stability can be proven. The accuracy and stability are then demonstrated by applying the proposed boundary condition to wave-propagation problems in layered waveguides.
Waveguides are transmission lines that guide electromagnetic waves in the desired direction and are utilized in various fields such as medical devices, radar systems, and satellite communications. Computational electromagnetics (CEM) is essential for designing and optimizing waveguides. The finite element method (FEM), which is one of the numerical analysis techniques, is efficient in solving closed problems such as waveguides. In order to apply FEM for waveguide analysis, boundary conditions that truncate the computational domain are required. This paper performs electromagnetic simulations using absorbing boundary conditions (ABC) and waveguide port boundary conditions (WPBC) in 2/D and 3/D waveguides using the finite element method and compared their performances. The accuracy of the analysis was verified by comparing the results with HFSS, a representative commercial electromagnetic simulation software. Simulation results confirm that applying WPBC allows for smaller analysis domains than ABC.

Most of parabolic approximation models employ a relatively limited open boundary condition in which there is no depth variation in the longshore direction outside of the computation domain so that Snell's law may be presumed to hold. Existing Kirby's condition belongs to this category and in the paper both modified Kirby's method and Dirichlet boundary condition are presented in detail and numerical results of three methods were shown. Judging from computation to wave propagations over a circular shoal in a constant depth, the method based on present Dirichlet boundary condition with fictitious numerical adjusting regions in both sides of the computation domain gives the least distorted amplitude ratio distribution.

An analysis of the flow within supersonic turbine cascades is necessary to design and manufacture turbo-pump system. Because of the differences between the specified inlet boundary value and the computed inlet value caused by the far field inlet boundary condition, the computations at desired inlet conditions can not be achieved. So, this paper studied the problem occurred when far field inlet conditions were specified as inlet boundary conditions. And the numerical analyses using Fine Turbo, CFD Program, has been performed and compared with those of experiments when a converging-diverging nozzle or a linear nozzle was located in front of cascades instead of the far field inlet condition.
In a computational fluid dynamics, the imposition of open boundary condition has an important part of the accuracy but it is not easy to find the optimal boundary rendition. This difficult is introduced by making artificial boundary in unbounded domairs. Such open boundary requires us to ensure the continuity of all primitive variables because the nature is in continuum. Here we introduce a revised well-conditioned open boundary condition particularly in FEM and apply it to various problems-entrainment, body force, short domains.

The slip velocity and the temperature jumps for low-speed flow in microchannels are investigated using Langmuir slip boundary condition. This slip boundary condition is suggested to simulate micro flow. The current study analyzes Langmuir slip boundary condition theoretically and it analyzed numerically micro-Couette flow, micro-Poiseuille flow and grooved microchannel flow. First, to prove validity for Langmuir slip condition, an analytical solution for micro-Couette flow is derived from Navier-Stokes equations with Langmuir slip conditions and is compared with DSMC and an analytical solution with Maxwell slip boundary condition. Second, the numerical analysis is performed for micro-Poiseuille flow and grooved microchannel flow. The slip velocity and temperature distribution are compared with results of DSMC or Maxwell slip condition and those are shown in good agreement.

Global warming and the depletion of fossil fuels have been caused by decades of reckless development. Wind energy is one form of renewable energy and is considered a future energy source. The wind tower is designed with a fundamental frequency in the soft-stiff design between the 1P and 3P range to avoid resonance. Usually, to perform natural frequency analysis of a wind tower, the boundary condition is set to the Fixed-End, and soil-pile interaction is not considered. In this study, consideration of the effect of soil-pile interaction on the wind tower was included and the difference in the natural frequency was studied. The fixed boundary condition was not affected by the soil condition and depth of the pile and the coupled spring boundary condition was unaffected by the depth of pile but affected by the depth of the pile, and the Winkler spring boundary condition is affected by both the soil condition and the depth of the pile. Therefore, the coupled spring boundary condition should be used in shallow depth soil conditions because the soil condition does not take the shallow depth soil into consideration.
