This study is on architectural characteristics of the existing ㅁ-shaped Yo-Sa with two stories in Buddhist temple. The Yo-Sa has had the function of space for not only monasticism but also living of buddhist priests and been one of the important spaces in Buddhist temple from the beginning of it. The Yo-Sa with two stories appeared mostly in the later Chosun Dynasty, so the origin of the Yo-Sa with two stories is thought that it might relate to the circumstances of temples in the later Chosun Dynasty. Having got in the period of Chosun Dynasty, Buddhism lost the power that he has enjoyed since Korea Dynasty was established and the economic power of temples as well. Because of a change for the worse, the Buddhist priests should manage with reduced income and combine many buildings with various functions into a singular to overcome their circumstances. Therefore a waekened economic power might be a primary factor which urged to change form of Yo-Sa from one-storied to two-storied. The ㅁ-shaped Yo-Sa with two stories have the Dae-Bang-Chae for worship, Seung-Bang for Buddhist's living room in the bottom floor and garnering spaces to store up the agricultural produce, miscellaneous article, etc in the top floor. The composition methods depend on the condition of the lay of land, intentional design, and so on. Therefore, the ㅁ-shped Yo-Sa with two stories shows the diversity of space composition and architectural characteristics.
Microbial mats, the yellow and reddish brown deposits formed from the mine drainage, occur on the bottom of drain and mine tailing pond of the Ilkwang mine in Pusan, Korea. The constituents of microbial mats and their biomineralization were studied by using XRD, IR, and SEM-EDX. The upper part of the microbial mat is yellow-colored and composed of tube-shaped and small spheroid bacterial materials, which are mainly made up of amorphous and poor-crystalline iron-oxide minerals. The shape and composition of bacterial materials suggest that they are probably belong to iron-oxide mineral aggregates. The iron-oxide minerals of the yellow microbial mats are mainly goethite, but those of the reddish brown microbial mats contain abundant hematite along with goethite. This implies that with the evolution of biomats, goethite may be transformed to hematite.

With the rising social interest in the sustainable life, demands are growing for Hanok, as a viable alternative to modernized architecture of Western origin. However, even Hanok is gaining popularity among the general public, its design and construction are still a minor practice. Aiming to build an information system of Hanok, this research proposes a new design process for traditional architecture, utilizing a parametric design methodology. This process, based on the understanding of tectonic joints and spatial composition of our traditional architecture, defines a parametric relationship among the structural elements that compose Hanok. The research uses Gehry Technologies' Digital Project and Autodesk Revit Architecture to apply a concurrent parametric design methodology, approaching the project in both bottom-up and top-down to present a new design process for Hanok elements.
Biological and chemical characteristics and trophodynamics in the frontal zone were investigated in the southern waters of Korea, Temperature, nutrients (dissolved inorganic nitrogen, $PO_4^{3-}-P$, and $SiO_2^{-}-Si$) chlorophyll a and zooplankton were collected and analyzed along the two transects, the frontal zone and the non-frontal zone, in April, 1994. Nutrients were higher in the non-frontal zone than in the frontal zone. But chlorophyll a concentration was high in the frontal zone, particularly at the 20 m depth of the main frontal station (St. TII-2), where was located at the junction between the stratified layer and the non-stratified layer with the lowest nutrients. Zooplankton was more abundant in the frontal zone than in the non-frontal zone, particularly at the innermost station of the frontal zone. Copepods showed high composition rate more than $90\%$ at all stations except the main frontal station (St. TII-2). At the main frontal station (St. TII-2), euphausiids and siphonophores were dominated. Chlorophyll a revealed a significant relationships with $SiO_2^{-}-Si$ in both transects and copepods in the non-frontal zone. Copepods also showed very close relationship with siphonophores in the frontal zone. This suggests that the abundance of copepods could be controlled as bottom-up in the non-frontal zone and as top-down in the frontal zone.

In order to develope piezoelectric transformer for the ballast of fluorescent lamp, a new shape and electrode pattern of piezoelectric transformer has been investigated in this work. The composition of piezoelectric ceramics was 0.95Pb(Zr$_{0.51}$Ti$_{0.49}$)O$_3$+0.03Pb(Mn$_{1}$3/Nb$_{2}$3/)O$_3$+0.02Pb(Sb$_{1}$2/Nb$_{1}$2/)O$_3$. The sample prepared by this composition system showed the characteristics which has about 1200 of relative dielecric constant, 1100 of the mechanical quality factor, 0.53 of the electromechanical coupling coefficient, 320 pC/N of the piezoelectric constant d$_{33}$, 0.3 % of the dissipation factor. Diameter and thickness of disk-type piezoelectric transformer was 45 mm and 4 mm, respectively. The driving and generating electrode with their gap of 1mm were fabricated on the top surface. But the common electrode was fabricated on the whole bottom surface. The electrode surface ratio of driving and generating part on the top surface ranges from 1.4:1 to 3:1. We investigated the electrical characteristics with the variation of the electrode surface ratio of driving and generating part in the range of load resistance of 100 $\Omega$~70 k$\Omega$. The set-up voltage ratio of this piezoelectric transformer increases with increasing both the electrode surface of driving part and the load resistance. The set-up voltage ratio at no load resistance was more than 60 times. On the other hand, the efficiency decreases with increasing the electrode surface of driving part. In the case of the electrode surface of both 1.4:1 and 2:1, maximum efficiency showed above 97 % at load resistance of 2 k$\Omega$. However, in the case of the electrode surface of 3:1, maximum efficiency showed about 94 % at load resistance of 3 k$\Omega$.>.>.>.
Long-term variation of zooplankton community and species composition was studied from 2003 to 2014 in a deep reservoir, Lake Soyang, in monsoon climate region, Korea. In addition, we examined the correlation with environmental factors. Annual precipitation of watershed showed a large variation in the $705{\sim}1,779mm\;yr^{-1}$ and more than 70% of it was being concentrated from June to September. The water quality of Lake Soyang was shown a clearly seasonal variations and particularly turbid water flowing into the lake during rainy season was the most important environmental factors. Zooplankton community in Lake Soyang showed a significant difference before and after 2006. Zooplankton biomass has shown a large increase and also showed a change in the zooplankton community structure since 2006. The of zooplankton showed positive correlation with temperature and BOD, Chl. a, TP concentration. These results are considered that nutrient and organic matter contained in the turbid water influences the increase in zooplankton biomass and species composition. However, water quality was limited to account for the increase in biomass of zooplankton. For example, increase of small zooplankton density (rotifer; Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra vulgaris) in spring which is dominated by diatoms (large size; Melosira, Synedra etc.) is considered as a bottom-up effect by the microbial loop. And increased density of crustaceans in autumn was considered a top-down effects by the relationship between predator and prey of microzooplankton and mesozooplankton. In other words the inflow of allochthonous organic matter during rainy season also affected to zooplankton food web in Lake Soyang. In conclusion, biomass, diversity and long-term variations of zooplankton in Lake Soyang were determined by physico-chemical factors but also it is considered that biological interactions is important.

Mass mortalities of farmed shellfish, mostly in summer season, thus named mass summer mortalities, have been a global issue in shellfish aquaculture. The 2013 mass summer mortalities in the confined waters of Goseong Bay, Goseong, Korea were quite a unique and intensive for two farmed species, the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, and bay scallops, Argopecten irradians. The mortalities were progressive from the bottom of the suspended oysters and caged scallops in the waters, reaching up to 80% for the oyster and 95% for the scallop in about 20 days after the first occurrence, early August, 2013. We monitored a wide range of environmental factors, including water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, turbidity, acidity (pH), organic and inorganic matters, chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspected pathogenic agent, and phytoplankton composition throughout the water column where the two species were suspended or caged. Our survey concluded that the hypoxia or anoxia might be a major cause of the mortalities. Here, we detailed the mortalities and ways to arrive at the conclusion.
The use of cover crops has a beneficial effect on sustainable soil management in pear orchards. We aimed to compare changes in soil chemical properties and biota with the use of different cover crops. We tested the effects of five cover plants, including hairy vetch, orchard grass, rattail fescue, rye, and perennial ryegrass. Use of different cover crops had a minimal impact on soil chemical properties through three year experiments. The aboveground biomass was greatest with the use of rye. The potential amounts of returnable N and P were highest when leguminous hairy vetch was used as a cover plant. Changes in the composition of the microbial community were investigated by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Microbial PLFAs were highest with the use of rattail fescue and lowest with the use of hairy vetch. Minimal changes in the abundances of nematodes and microarthropods suggested that there was no bottom-up control in the soil ecosystem. The results also show that increases in aboveground biomass and nutrient content with the use of cover crops may not promote the abundance of soil organisms.

InP single crystal, III-V binary compound semiconductor, was grown by VGF(vertical gradient freeze) method using quartz ampoule and its electrical optical properties were investigated. Phosphorous powders were put in the bottom of quartz ampoule and Indium metal charged in conical quartz crucible what was attached at the upper side position inside the quartz ampoule. It was vacuous under the pressure of $10^5$Torr and sealed up. Indium metal was melted at $1070^{\circ}C$ and InP composition was formed by diffusion of phosphorous sublimated at $450^{\circ}C$ into Indium melt. By cooling the InP composition melt ($2^{\circ}C$~$5^{\circ}C$/hr of cooling rate) in range of $1070^{\circ}C$~$900^{\circ}C$, InP crystal was grown. The grown InP single crystals were investigated by X-ray analysis and polarized optical microscopy. Electrical properties were measured by Van der Pauw method. At the cooling method. At the cooling rate of $2^{\circ}C$/hr, growth direction of ingot was [111] and the quality of ingot was better at the upper side of ingot than the lower side. It was found that the InP crystals were n-type semiconductor and the carrier concentration, electron mobility and relative resistivity were $10^{15}$~$10^{16}/\textrm{cm}^3$ , $2\times 10^3$~$3\times 10^4{\textrm}{cm}^2$/Vsec and$2\times 10^{-1}$~$2\times 10^{-3}$/ Wcm in the range of 150K~300K, respectively.

Electrochemical deposition characteristics of CdSe nanorods were investigated for hybrid solar cell applications. CdSe nanorods were fabricated by electrochemical method in $CdSO_4$ and $H_2SeO_3$ dissolved aqueous solution using an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. Uniformity of CdSe nanorods was dependent on the diameter and the height of holes in AAO. The current density, current mode, bath composition and temperature were controlled to obtain a 1:1 atomic composition of CdSe. CdSe nanorods deposited by direct-current method showed better uniformity compared to those deposited by purse-current and/or purse-reverse current methods due to the bottom-up filling characteristics. $H_2SeO_3$ concentration showed more significant effects on pH of solution and stoichiometry of deposits compared to that of $CdSO_4$. A 1:1 stoichiometry of uniform CdSe nanorods was obtained from 0.25M $CdSO_4-5$ mM $H_2SeO_3$ electrolytes with a direct current of 10 $mA/cm^2$ at room temperature. X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction pattern investigations demonstrate that CdSe nanorods are a uniform cubic CdSe crystal.
