  • In this study, various laboratory tests using bottom ash, which has similar engineering properties with sand, were conducted in order to solve the problem of clogging in granular compaction pile and to address sand supply and demand. In particular, testing was performed to help reduce clogging and minimize voids in a crushed stone compaction pile constructed in soft ground. Based on compaction tests and large diameter direct shear tests, an optimum mixing ratio was determined to be 80:20 (crushed stone to bottom ash) because an 80:20 mixing ratio showed the highest shear strength. Test results showed that as the bottom ash content increased above 20%, internal friction angle decreased. Another test method showed freezing and thawing had little effect when the replacement ratio was over 40%. Therefore, bottom ash mixed compaction piles in soft ground are most economical at a 40% replacement ratio.

  • In general, sand compaction pile(SCP) method and gravel compaction pile(GCP) method have been mainly used to reinforce soft soils such as soft clay or loose sandy ground. But the sand compaction pile method has problems such as lack of sand supply and destroying the nature while collecting sand, the gravel compaction pile method has a problem such as decreased permeability of the drainage material due to clogging. Recently, the study to replace sand with bottom ash which has similar engineering properties with sand is in active. As a fundamental research on bottom ash mixture compaction pile utilizing bottom ash, its behavioral characteristics depending on granular materials and replacement ratio has been simulated numerically. In particular, Settlement Reduction Ratio(SRR) according to the distance from the center of pile was calculated. The main findings were as follows. Change values of Mixture Compaction Pile's SRR according to granular materials showed similar patterns and stiffness of the composite soil is increased depending on the replacement ratio so SRR showed decreased patterns. Especially, when the replacement ratio is in 20~40%, it increase significantly. When the replacement ratio is over 40%, it increase slowly. When considering the economics, 30~40% replacement ratio is appropriate.

  • The rammed aggregate compaction pile method is widely used as soft ground improvement method because of the installed piles improve not only overall composite capacity but also discharge capacity. But the discharge capacity is declined when the clogging is generated due to the clay penetration into voids of rammed aggregate compaction pile with the time elapsed. The purpose of this study is to reduce the clogging problem occurred in rammed aggregate compaction pile constructed in the soft ground and to minimize voids of rammed aggregate compaction pile. The proper mixing ratio was determined which is based on the results of the large scale direct shear tests conducted to get strength and permeability as optimum mixing ratio of crushed stone and bottom ash. The test results indicated that the highest internal friction angle was obtained at 80:20 mixing ratio of crushed stone and bottom ash. The internal friction angle was declined when the mixing ratio of the bottom ash increased over 20%. The results of the clogging tests, presented that the mixture of 80:20 crushed stone and bottom ash is highest effective of clogging than ratio of pure crushed stone.
