In this study, metallurgical grade (MG) silicon with 99% purity produced by arc furnace process was systematically investigated for slag refining. The most problematic impurities to remove from MG silicon are boron (B) and phosphorus (P). To remove B and P from MG-silicon, we used synthetic slag in the molten state. MG-silicon with synthetic slag of CaO, $SiO_2$, and $CaF_2$ was melted using by high-frequency induction furnace with electrical output of 50kW. Specimens prepared by various refining process conditions(holding time, mixture ratio) were inspected by combined analysis of ICP-MS and XRF. With this approach, B has been reduced to <5ppm, P to <1ppm and other impurities to 0.1~0.2% except for Calcium. Calcium has been increased from 17ppm to 1500ppm. Problem of calcium contamination will be resolved by additional refining processes.
The aim of this research is to analyze buckling and bending behavior of a sandwich Reddy beam with porous core and composite face sheets reinforced by boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and shape memory alloy (SMA) wires resting on Vlasov's foundation. To this end, first, displacement field's equations are written based on the higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). And also, to model the SMA wire properties, constitutive equation of Brinson is used. Then, by utilizing the principle of minimum potential energy, the governing equations are derived and also, Navier's analytical solution is applied to solve the governing equations of the sandwich beam. The effect of some important parameters such as SMA temperature, the volume fraction of SMA, the coefficient of porosity, different patterns of BNNTs and porous distributions on the behavior of buckling and bending of the sandwich beam are investigated. The obtained results show that when SMA wires are in martensite phase, the maximum deflection of the sandwich beam decreases and the critical buckling load increases significantly. Furthermore, the porosity coefficient plays an important role in the maximum deflection and the critical buckling load. It is concluded that increasing porosity coefficient, regardless of porous distribution, leads to an increase in the critical buckling load and a decrease in the maximum deflection of the sandwich beam.

In this study, techniques of ion implantation were used in order to improve the characteristics of metal materials such as the oxidation and wear resistant. In particular it is necessary to develope their oxidation and wear resistant that could be used in severe environmental conditions. There are mainly two elementary technologies including ion implantation and/or thin film coating. Ion implantation method was performed for surface modification. As a result, it was found that some ion implantations methods such as Nb, high-temperature Nb ion implantation and Nb+C combined implantation are somewhat effective for improving the oxidation resistance of TiAl alloy. Furthermore, the fluorine PBII treatment is more effective for improving the oxidation resistance of the TiAl alloy with three-dimensional shapes. The implantation of boron ion into thin film of TiN was also effective for improving the properties of materials like high temperature wear resistance. TiCrN film was applied to the actual seal ring for steam turbines, and it was observed that its sliding property showed a successfully good performance.

Along with the development of power electronics and magnetic materials, permanent magnet (PM) brushless direct current (BLDC) motors are now widely used in many fields of modern industry BLDC motors have many advantages such as high efficiency, large peak torque, easy control of speed, and reliable working characteristics. However, Compared with the other electric motors without a PM, BLDC motors with a PM have inherent cogging torque. It is often a principle source of vibration, noise and difficulty of control in BLDC motors. Cogging torque which is produced by the interaction of the rotor magnetic flux and angular variation in the stator magnetic reluctance can be reduced by sinusoidal air-gap flux density waveform due to reduction of variation of magnetic reluctance. Therefore, this paper will present a design method of magnetizing system for reduction of cogging torque and low manufacturing cost of BLDC motor with isotropic bonded neodynium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets in ring type by sinusoidal air-gap flux density distribution. An analytical technique of magnetization makes use of two-dimensional finite element method (2-D FEM) and Preisach model that expresses the hysteresis phenomenon of magnetic materials in order for accurate calculation. In addition, For optimum design of magnetizing fixture, Factorial design which is one of the design of experiments (DOE) is used.
The effects of $B_4C$ on the mechanical properties of WC/Ni-Si hardmetal were analyzed using sintered bodies comprising WC(70-x wt.%), Ni (28.5 wt.%), Si (1.5 wt.%), and $B_4C$ (x wt.%), where $$0{\leq_-}x{\leq_-}1.2$$ wt.%. Samples were prepared by a combination of mechanical milling and liquid-phase sintering. Phase and microstructure characterizations were conducted using X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe X-ray micro analysis. The mechanical properties of the sintered bodies were evaluated by measuring their hardness and transverse rupture strength. The addition of $B_4C$ improved the sinterability of the hardmetals. With increasing $B_4C$ content, their hardness increased, but their transverse rupture strength decreased. The changes of sinterability and mechanical properties were attributed to the alloying reaction between $B_4C$ and the binder metal (Ni, Si).
The small modular sodium-cooled fast reactor (SMSFR) is an important component of Generation-IV reactors. The objective of this work is to improve the reactivity control in SMSFR by using innovative systems, including burnable poisons and optimized control rods. SMSFR with MOX fuel usually exhibits high burnup reactivity loss that leads to high excess reactivity and potential fuel melting in control rod withdrawal (CRW) accidents, which becomes an important constraint on the safety and economic efficiency of SMSFR. This work applies two types of burnable poisons in a SMSFR to reduce the excess reactivity. The first one homogenously loads minor actinides in the fuel. The second one combines absorber and moderators in specific assemblies. The influence of burnable poisons on the core characteristics is discussed and integrated into the analysis of CRW accidents. The results show that burnable poisons improve the safety performance of the core in a significant way. Burnable poisons also lessen the demand for the number, absorption ability, and insertion depth of control rods. Two optimized control rod designs with rare earth oxides (Eu2O3 and Gd2O3) and moderators are compared to the conventional design with natural boron carbide (B4C). The optimized designs show improved neutronic and safety performance.

The enhancement of service life of damaged or cracked structures is currently major issue to the researchers and engineers. In order to improve the life of cracked aging aircraft structures, the repair technique which uses adhesively bonded boron/epoxy composite patches is being widely considered as a cost-effective and reliable method. This paper is to study the performance of the bonded composite patch repair of a plate containing an inclined central through-crack. A 3-dimensional finite element method having three layers to the cracked plate, composite patch and adhesive layer, is used to compute the stress intensity factor. In this paper, the reduction of stress intensity factors near the crack-tip are determined to evaluate the effects of various non-dimensional design parameter including composite patch thickness, and material properties of the composite patch and thickness of the adhesive layer, materials of patch etc., and the crack length, Finally, The problem of how to optimize the patch geometric configurations has been discussed.

Deburring and edge finishing technology as the last process of machining operation is required for manufacturing of advanced procesion components, duburring has treated as a difficult problem on going tothe highefficency, automation in the FMS. Removal of butt with various shapes, dimensions and properties coultn't has a standard and has depended on manual treatment. Especially, deburring for cross hole inside owing to passing through out perpendicular to a main hole is more difficult, the electrolytic method is proper as its solution at practical aspects. Therefore, for the high effciency and automation of intermal deburring in the cross hole, development of electrolytic debutting technology is needed. So, the new process in the burr treatment is supposed. In this study, in the eliminating burr inside cross hole, the principle and machining performances of electrochemical deburring by Cubic-Boron-Nitrade abrasive electroplate wheel are investigated, Design and manufacture of CBN electroplated wheel and analysis of characteristics with electrolytic debutting are achieved. Also deburring efficiency and electrolytic performance for cross hole were examined according to electrolytic current and electrolytic deburring condition corresponding to acquired edge quality was found out.

Amorphous magnetic materials with competing magnetic interactions are the subject of current interest. Critical behaviour studies have been performed in order to understand the nature of the phase transition at the Curie point (T$\sub$c/) and type of magnetic ordering below the T$\sub$c/. In some cases there exists a temperature interval in which the magnetic system consists of ferromagnetic grains separated by the paramagnetic interlayers. Magnetic properties of nanoparticles embedded in amorphous matrix also are the subject of recent interest. While these materials exhibit excellent soft magnetic properties at room temperature, some of them have been found to be superparamagnetic in the temperature range above the T$\sub$c/ of the matrix. Thus the role of different magnetic phases in the intergrain magnetic coupling can possibly be taken apart in a sufficiently broad temperature range and investigated separately. In particular materials with competing magnetic exchange interactions show characteristics of enhanced magnetoresistance and softer magnetic properties when magnetic nanocrystals are dispersed in amorphous matrix. We expect careful magnetic measurements in the vicinity of T$\sub$c/ would throw some light on magnetic behaviour of above materials. We present here the FMR analysis of Fe$\sub$82/Mn$\sub$8-x/B$\sub$x/Zr$\sub$10/ alloy near the Curie point.
A plate heat exchanger (PHE) normally uses vacuum brazing technology for connecting plates and fins. However, the reliability of high temperature brazing, especially with nickel-based filler metals containing boron the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in brazed joints is of major concern. since they considerably degrade the mechanical properties. This research was examined the vacuum brazing of commercially SUS304 stainless steel with BNi-2 (Ni-Cr-B-Si) filler metal, and discussed to determine the influence of brazing temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical strength of brazed joints. In the metallographic analysis it is observed that considerable large area of Cr-B intermetallic compound phases at the brazing layer and the brazing tensile strength is related to removal of this brittle phase greatly. The mechanical properties of brazing layer could be stabilized through increasing the brazing temperature over $100^{\circ}C$ more than melting temperature of filler metals, and diffusing enough the brittle intermetallic compound formed in the brazing layer to the base metal.
