The antioxidative activity of each molecular weight (MW) fraction of Maillard reaction products prepared from a D-glucose and glycine system, i. e., MW below 1000, MW between 1000 to 3000 and MW above 5000, nondialyzable melanoidins, reduced melanoidins and ozone-treated melanoidins were estimated in a linoleic acid-aqueous system. The antioxidative activity ana reducing ability of Maillard reaction products increased with increasing molecular weight and color intensity. Maillard reaction products of MW above 1000 showed obvious antioxidative activity and reducing ability, whereas the MW fraction below 1000 showed only weak activities. When nondialyzable melanoidins were reduced with sodium borohydride, their color intensity and reducing ability remarkably decreased, but their antioxidative activity did not decrease so much.

Reduction of (${\pm}$)-3-ketoproline ethyl ester (1) by $NaBH_4$ in the presence of $CaCl_2$ and $MgCl_2$ as the chelating agents gave selective products cis-3(R/S)-alcohols, while reduction by $NaBH_4$ alone or chelated with $NiCl_2$ and $AlBr_3$ gave mixtures of cis- and trans-alcohols. The reduction of (${\pm}$)-1 by various vegetables however, gave exclusively the cis-alcohol as the major and trans-alcohol as the minor. On the contrary, reduction of (${\pm}$)-1 by carrot afforded a mixture of cis- and trans-alcohols, in which the trans-alcohol exists as the major product. In addition, we found that this biocatalyst selectively converted S-enantiomer of (${\pm}$)-1 to the cis-alcohol, and R-enantiomer to a mixture of cis- and trans-alcohols with cis-alcohol as the major product. This fact prompted us to use various fresh plant tissues for stereoselective reduction of diverse types of pyrrolidinones, as its stereoselectivity towards racemic mixtures is higher compared to that using chemical reducing agents.
Each nitrogen and oxygen site isotope enriched the cyclophosphamide metabolite phosphoramide mustard was synthesized. Reaction of N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphoramidic dichloride$[Cl_2P(O)N(CH_2CH_2Cl)_2]$ with benzyl alcohol and ammonia gave N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphorodiamidic acid phenylmethyl ester $[BzO(H_2N)P(O)N(CH_2CH_2Cl)_2]$. Catalytic hydrogenation of this benzyl ester followed by the addition of cyclohexylamine provided PM. Incorporation of $^{15}NH_3$ into this general scheme gave PM with a $^{15}NH_2$ moiety. Glycine-$^{15}N$ was converted to bis(2-chloroethyl)amine-$^{15}N$ hydrochloride which, in turn, provided for N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)phosphorodiamidic-$^{15}N$ dichloride. Use of this compound in the general synthetic pathway yielded PM CHA with $^{15}N$ in the mustard moiety. $^{17}O$-Enriched PM was generated through the use of benzyl alcohol-$^{17}O$. To obtain the alcohol, labelled benzaldehyde was made by exchange with $^{17}OH_2$ and was then reduced with sodium borohydride.
Betaine was treated with hydrochloric acid and then with sodium borohydride to give a hydroxy compound 2. The reaction of 2 with thionyl chloride followed by thiourea led a comp ound 5. Oxidation of compound 2 with pyridinium dichromate(PDC) and succesive treatment with Lawesson's reagent also afforded the same compound 5. Cleavage of N-C14 bond compound of 7 was carried out via two reaction sequence from the compound 4. Finally, compound 10 was sythesized by a series of transformations from the compound 4.
$BiVO_4$ nanomaterial was synthesized from bismuth (III) nitrate pentahydrate [$Bi(NO_3)_3{\cdot}5H_2O$] and ammonium vanadate (V) [$NH_4VO_3$]. The $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was fabricated by calcining the $BiVO_4$ nanomaterial and graphene under an oxygen-free atmosphere at $700^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize structural and morphological properties of samples. The catalytic activity of the $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was studied for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, 3-nitrophenol and 2-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride [$NaBH_4$]. The photocatalytic activity of the $BiVO_4$-graphene nanocomposite was demonstrated by the degradation of organic dyes like BG, MB, MO and RhB under irradiation at 365 nm. The catalytic and photocatalytic activity were studied by UV-vis spectrophotometry.
In this study, we prepare the Ag nanofluids synthesized by the chemical reduction method and measure the extinction coefficient of those nanofluids at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The Ag nanofluids are synthesized by the chemical reduction method using silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) and sodium borohydride ($NaBH_4$) in water and ethylene glycol (EG). For stable dispersion of Ag particles in the base liquids, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) is added as a surfactant. The extinction coefficient of manufactured Ag nanofluids is measured by an in-house developed measurement system at the wavelength of 632.8 nm. The results show that the extinction coefficient of water-based and EG-based Ag nanofluids is linearly increased with respect to the particle loadings. Moreover, it is shown that the extinction coefficient of EG-based Ag nanofludis is higher than that of water-based Ag nanofluids. Finally we compare the experimental results with both the Maxwell-Garnett model and Rayleigh scattering approximation model, and they demonstrate that the Rayleigh scattering approximation model is reasonably predict the extinction coefficient of Ag nanofluids using hydraulic diameter of silver nanoparticle.

Reduction of nitrate by zero valent iron (Fe$^{0}$ ) has been previously studied, but the proper treatment for the by-product of ammonium has not been reported. However, in terms of nitrogen contamination, ammonium may be regarded as another form of nitrogen contaminants since it can be oxidized to nitrate again under aerobic conditions. This study is focused on simultaneous removal of nitrate and its by-product of ammonium, with the ZanF (Zeolite anchored Fe), a product derived from zeolite modified by Fe(II) chloride followed by reduction with sodium borohydride. Batch experiments were performed without buffer at two different pH condition with ZanF, iron filing, Fe(II)-sorbed zeolite, and pure zeolite to estimate the nitrate reduction and the ammonium production. At higher pH, removal rate of nitrate was reduced in both ZanF and iron filings. ZnF removed 60 % of nitrate at initial pH of 3.3 with no production of ammonium, while iron filing showed equivalent production of ammonium to the reduced amount of nitrate. In terms of nitrogen contamination, ZanF removed about 60 % and 40 % at initial pH of 3.3 and 6, respectively, while iron filing presented negligible removal against total nitrogen including nitrate and ammonium.
Selectins are carbohydrate-binding cell adhesion molecules that play a major role in the initiation of inflammatory responses. Heparin can bind to P-selectin, and its anti-inflammatory property is mainly due to inhibition of P-selectin. However, the strong anticoagulant activity of heparin limits its clinical use. We prepared periodate-oxidized, borohydride-reduced heparin (RO-heparin) by chemical modification and tested its anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory activities. Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) assays showed that, compared with heparin, RO-heparin had greatly reduced anticoagulant activity. Intravenous administration of this compound led to reduction in the peritoneal infiltration of neutrophils in a mouse acute inflammation model. In vitro cell adhesion experiments demonstrated that the effect of RO-heparin on inflammatory responses was mainly due to inhibiting the interaction of P-selectin with its ligands. These results indicate that RO-heparin may be a safer treatment for inflammation than heparin, especially when selectin is targeted.
$MoS_2$ precursors were synthesized by reacting thioacetamide ($C_2H_5NS$) with sodium molybdate dihydrate ($Na_2MoO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$) in aqueous HCl solution. $MoS_2$ nanoparticles were prepared from dried $MoS_2$ precursors by calcination in an electric furnace at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an inert argon atmosphere. $MoS_2-C_{60}$ nanocomposites were obtained by heating $MoS_2$ nanoparticles and fullerene ($C_{60}$) together in an electric furnace at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Their morphological and the structural properties were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The $MoS_2$ nanoparticles and $MoS_2-C_{60}$ nanocomposites were used as catalysts in the reductions of 2-, 3-, and 4-nitrophenol in the presence of sodium borohydride. The photocatalytic activities of the $MoS_2$ nanoparticles and $MoS_2-C_{60}$ nanocomposites were evaluated in the degradation of organic dyes (brilliant green, methylene blue, methyl orange, and rhodamine B) under ultraviolet light (254 nm).
