This paper presents the information retrieval system which can retrieve the most appropriate answer sentence for user queries by using the concept and the attribute for the knowledge retrieval. The system analyzes the user query into the Boolean queries with the concept and the attribute and then retrieve the relevant documents in the indexing set of answer documents. Users can retrieve the relevant answer sentences from the relevant documents. For this, the answer documents indexed by the concept and the attribute are segmented by each sentence respectively. Thus, the segmented sentences are analyzed into the concept and the attribute of which the relevance degree with indexing units of documents is evaluated. Then, the system indexes the location of answer sentences. In the experiment, we evaluate the performance of our answer retrieval system against 100 user queries and show the experimental results.

The conventional Boolean retrieval systems based on vector spae model can provide the results of retrieval fast, they can't reflect exactly user's retrieval purpose including semantic information. Consequently, the results of retrieval process are very different from those users expected. This fact forces users to waste much time for finding expected documents among retrieved documents. In his paper, we designed a bayesian SOM(Self-Organizing feature Maps) in combination with bayesian statistical method and Kohonen network as a kind of unsupervised learning, then perform classifying documents depending on the semantic similarity to user query in real time. If it is difficult to observe statistical characteristics as there are less than 30 documents for clustering, the number of documents must be increased to at least 50. Also, to give high rank to the documents which is most similar to user query semantically among generalized classifications for generalized clusters, we find the similarity by means of Kohonen centroid of each document classification and adjust the secondary rank depending on the similarity.

The goal of the information retrieval system is to search the docments which the user wants to obtain in fast and effiecient way. Many information retrieval models, including boolean models, vector models and fuzzy models based on the trasitional fuzzy set theory, have been proposed to achieve these kinds of objectives. However, the previous models have a limitation on the fact that they do not consider the users' preference in the search of documents. In this paper, we proposed a new extenced fuzzy information retrieval System which can handle the shortcomings of the previous ones. In the proposed model, a new similarity measure was applied in order to calculate the degree among documents, which can expliot the users' preference.
The paper proposes a pre-processing method for efficient processing of XML queries in information retrieval systems with a large amount of XML documents. For the pre-processing, we use a signature-based approach. In the conventional (flat document-based) information retrieval systems, user queries consist of keywords and boolean operators, and thus signatures are structured in a flat manner. However, in XML-based information retrieval systems, the user queries have the form of path query. Therefore, the flat signature cannot be effective for XML documents. In the paper, we propose a structured signature for XML documents. Through experiments, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method.
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate a robust search methodology that could be used in full-text information retrieval systems. A robust search methodology is one that can be easily used by a variety of users (particularly naive users) and it will give them comparable search performance regardless of their different expertise or interests In order to develop a possibly robust search methodology, a fully functional prototype of a fuzzy knowledge based information retrieval system was developed. Also, an experiment that used this prototype information retreival system was designed to investigate the performance of that search methodology over a small exploratory sample of user queries To probe the relatonships between the possibly robust search performance and the query organization using fuzzy inference logic, the search performance of a shallow query structure was analyzes. Consequently the following several noteworthy findings were obtained: 1) the hierachical(tree type) query structure might be a better query organization than the linear type query structure 2) comparing with the complex tree query structure, the simple tree query structure that has at most three levels of query might provide better search performance 3) the fuzzy search methodology that employs a proper levels of cut-off value might provide more efficient search performance than the boolean search methodology. Even though findings could not be statistically verified because the experiments were done using a single replication, it is worth noting however, that the research findings provided valuable information for developing a possibly robust search methodology in full-text information retrieval.
A conjunctive Boolean text query refers to a query that searches for tort documents containing all of the specified keywords, and is the most frequently used query form in information retrieval systems. Typically, the query specifies a long list of keywords for better precision, and in this case, the order of keyword processing has a significant impact on the query speed. Currently known approaches to this ordering are based on heuristics and, therefore, cannot guarantee an optimal ordering. We can use a systematic approach by leveraging a database query processing algorithm like the dynamic programming, but it is not suitable for a text query with a typically long list of keywords because of the algorithm's exponential run-time (Ο(n2$^{n-1}$)) for n keywords. Considering these problems, we propose a new approach based on a property called the join sequence separability. This property states that the optimal join sequence is separable into two subsequences of different join methods under a certain condition on the joined relations, and this property enables us to find a globally optimal join sequence in Ο(n2$^{n-1}$). In this paper we describe the property formally, present an optimization algorithm based on the property, prove that the algorithm finds an optimal join sequence, and validate our approach through simulation using an analytic cost model. Comparison with the heuristic text query optimization approaches shows a maximum of 100 times faster query processing, and comparison with the dynamic programming approach shows exponentially faster query optimization (e.g., 600 times for a 10-keyword query).

In this study, an experiment of information retrieval using fuzzy connection matrix of keywords was conducted. A query for retrieval was constructed from each keyword and Boolean operator such as AND, OR, NOT. In a workstation environment, the performance of the fuzzy retrieval system was proved to be considerably effective than that of the system using the crisp set theory. And both recall ratio and precision ratio showed that the proposed technique would be a possible alternative in future information retrieval. Some special features of this experimental system were ; ranking the results in the order of connectivity, making the retrieval results correspond flexibly by changing the threshold value, trying to accord the retrieval process with the retrieval semantics by treating the averse-connectivity (fuzzy value) as a semantic approximation between kewords.

To come up with the recommendations to improve the patent & trademark retrieval efficiency, 100,016 patent & trademark search requests by 17,559 unique users over a period of 193 days were analyzed. By analyzing 2,202 multi-query sessions, where one user issuing two or more queries consecutively, we discovered a number of retrieval efficiency improvements clues. The session analysis result also led to suggestions for new system features to help users reformulating queries. The patent & trademark retrieval users were found to be similar to the typical web users in certain aspects especially in issuing short queries. However, we also found that the patent & trademark retrieval users used Boolean operators more than the typical web search users. By analyzing the multi-query sessions, we found that the users had five intentions in reformulating queries such as paraphrasing, specialization, generalization, alternation, and interruption, which were also used by the web search engine users.
This paper discusses a reasoning model of information retrieval with a hierarchical thesaurus. The model computes the conceptual distance between a query and an object, both are indexed with weighted terms from a hierarchical thesaurus. The proposed model allows Boolean operators for user queries and edge weights for a hierarchical thesaurus. Experimental results have shown that the proposed model simulates, with surprising accuracy, people in the assessment of conceptual closeness between queries objects.
