Fathers' Awareness and Practice of Picture Book Reading with Toddlers (영아-아버지 그림책 읽기에 대한 아버지의 인식과 참여 실태)

  • The present study was designed to examine fathers' awareness and practice of picture book reading with toddlers. The subjects were 221 fathers who have toddlers, and the data collected by questionnaires were analysed by mean and standard deviation, and frequency analysis. As a result, approximately 59% of fathers stated that it is essential to read to their children who are 12 month old or less, and 36% of fathers answered that they read books as much as their children wanted. The majority considered the emotional aspect of picture book reading as being significant. Also, nearly half (46%) of the fathers read books to their children 1-2 times per week, and 37% of them spent 6-10 minutes at a time reading books. While reading books, 60% of the fathers explained text and pictures to their children and a fourth of the fathers answered their children's questions. Also, while reading books, fathers tried to accept their toddlers' responses positively. However, they did not have much time to read books to their children and had little knowledge on how to read books to infants. Further research and education programs on picture book reading for fathers are needed.

Analysis of Mis-conceptualizations regarding Evolution Originating from TV Animation and Science Books for Children (TV 만화와 아동 과학 도서에 의한 진화의 오개념 분석)

  • Many misconceptions regarding biology and evolution have been reported by students prior to being exposed to a formal education program of evolution which challenged them. This study sought to investigate and to analyze the misconception formation process of evolution originating from TV animation and science books for children. Firstly, to identify TV animation's influence on students' misconceptions of evolution, a questionnaire including TV animation characters was constructed and administered to 146 elementary school students, 161 middle school students, and 156 high school students. The data collected was analyzed. Secondly, 17 science books for children were sampled and the contents related to evolution were selected and analyzed in terms of five evolutionary explanations: creationism internal will explanation, teleological explanations, explanations of use and disuse, mutation and finally, natural selection. Children have understood 'growth' and 'metamorphosis' on TV animation as 'evolution'. The processes by which characters on TV animation undergo some forms of change, which are in fact a kind of metamorphosis has often been understood as 'evolution'. Many respondents have defined evolution incorrectly as the process of growing and changing shape. On the other hand, some science books fur children contained descriptions of evolution including' mutation and finally natural selection explanation'; however, most of the science books fur children sampled in this study were written through the perspectives of alternative evolutionary views such as 'teleology view', 'internal will view', and 'use and disuse view'. It is apparent that TV animation and science books fur children influence the formation of various misconceptions regarding evolution by children.

The Ontological Understandings of Young Children in the Picture Books for the Early Childhood (유아 그림책 속의 어린이에 대한 존재론적 이해)

  • This research is to understand young children ontologically by examining features of young children in the picture books for the early childhood. For the purpose, under the consultation with a picture book specialist and three level process of selection, 4 picture books were chosen as analytic objects. The study questions is as follows. What is ontological understandings on young children throughout picture books for the early childhood? Under this purpose the books chosen were John Burningham's , David Wiesner's , Hina Back's , Peter Sis's . The books went through dramaturgical coding and were thematised based on the theories of ontological phenomenology. Study results show that young child-being appearing in the picture-books are thematised as 'multi layered being with Ntwurf and Geworfenheit(Aldo)', 'responsible being risen above greed(Plotsam)', 'reflective being on face of others(Fairy of Jangsutang)', 'being who encourages educational response of adults.(Madlenka's Dog)' These results revealed that young child-being have features not different from (multi layered aspect of being), unique from(encouraging educational response), and beyond adult-being(responsibility and response towards others). Despite several limitations, this study helped understand the young children ontologically by revealing that they, not only as developmental beings with imperfection, dependence, and immaturity but as multi layered and requesting, responsible being, having the same features as adults and, at times, rise above adult-being.

The Proportion and Its Meaning of Characters with Immigration Background in Children's and Young Adult Books: Focusing on Books Published Since 2000 (어린이·청소년책에 등장하는 이주배경 등장인물의 비중과 그 의미 - 2000년 이후 출간된 작품을 대상으로 -)

  • This study analyzed Korean children's books that include ethnically and racially diverse characters, focusing on representation of ethnic minority and cultural sensitivity. Drawing from fiction recommendations by Happy Morning Reading from 2005 to 2017, only 32 books out of 3,214 books, less than 1%, include people with racially and ethnically diverse background. Among the 32 books, 23 featured educative messages inspired by the belief of social justice; four could be categorized as so-called 'melting pot' books, five depicted stories featuring characters that respect different cultures from their own. The issue tackled in the stories differed with the economical standing of the character's country of origin. When a character or her/his parent is from a developing country, the main issues of the book were racial discrimination, bullying, hostility against foreign-born parents, or harsh experience of migrant workers. On the other hand, when a character or her/his parent is from a developed country, the plots often surround the character's hopes, wishes, or personal worries. Only one book was illustrated by a person with immigration background; the others were all written and illustrated by Koreans with no immigration background.

The Effects of Experience of Studying Mathematics Education for Young Children Based on Picture Books on Pre-service Early Childhood Teachers with Their Attitude Toward Mathematics and Mathematics Teaching Efficiency (그림책을 활용한 유아수학교육 학습 경험이 예비 유아교사의 수학에 대한 태도와 수학교수효능감에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to understand how the experience of studying mathematics education for young children based on picture books is affecting pre-service early childhood teachers with their attitude toward mathematics and mathematics teaching efficiency. Methods: For this, a total of 39 pre-service early childhood teachers majoring in early childhood education at S university located in G metropolitan city participated in the study. 20 of them are randomly assigned to the experimental group while the rest 19 were assigned to the control group. The experimental group participated in the classes of mathematics education for young children based on picture books for 15 weeks, while the control group attended the normal classes of mathematics education for young children for the same period of time. By using SPSS 18.0 Program for the collected data, t-test was conducted for differences in the results of attitude toward mathematics and mathematics teaching efficiency. Results: The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, the experience of studying mathematics education for young children based on picture books had a positive effects on pre-service early childhood teachers' attitude toward mathematics, improved values and interest in mathematics, and reduced anxiety about mathematics. Secondly, the experience of studying mathematics education for young children based on picture books had a positive effects on improving pre-service early childhood teachers' mathematics teaching efficiency. Also, both faith in ability and faith in results have improved significantly. Conclusion/Implications: These results imply that the experience of studying mathematics education for young children based on picture books is an effective teaching-learning method in improving pre-service early childhood teachers' attitude toward mathematics and mathematics teaching efficiency.

An Exploratory Study on Discarded Books in Academic Libraries (대학도서관 단행본 자료의 장서폐기에 관한 연구)

  • This study attempted to discover the problems related to the increasing book disposal trend within academic libraries by analyzing the disposal status over ten years and interviews with the librarians. The analysis utilized Korea Education and Research Information Service provided disposal information from 2010 to 2019. The academic libraries with more than 2 million books had disposed of the most number of books. This trend led to a distinctive decrease in the books' duplicate copies in terms of the collection composition. The librarians from the organizations, which conducted disposal more than three times and one massive removal within ten years, revealed in the interviews that they discarded many valuable duplicate books. They discussed the importance of digitizing high-value resources and also the limitation imposed by the copyright law. In conclusion, this study pointed out that book disposal can cause changes in the collection composition in the long run and suggested that academic libraries pay attention to these changes. The study also suggested evaluating the discarded books' values to guide the digitization efforts and count the number of books to include digital book use rights.

Deep Learning-based Stock Price Prediction Using Limit Order Books and News Headlines (호가창과 뉴스 헤드라인을 이용한 딥러닝 기반 주가 변동 예측 기법)

  • Recently, various studies have been conducted on stock price prediction using machine learning and deep learning techniques. Among these studies, the latest studies have attempted to predict stock prices using limit order books, which contain buy and sell order information of stocks. However, most of the studies using limit order books consider only the trend of limit order books over the most recent period of a specified length, and few studies consider both the medium and short term trends of limit order books. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a deep learning-based prediction model that predicts stock price more accurately by considering both the medium and short term trends of limit order books. Moreover, the proposed model considers news headlines during the same period to reflect the qualitative status of the company in the stock price prediction. The proposed model extracts the features of changes in limit order books with CNNs and the features of news headlines using Word2vec, and combines these information to predict whether a particular company's stock will rise or fall the next day. We conducted experiments to predict the daily stock price fluctuations of five stocks (Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Tesla) with the proposed model using the real NASDAQ limit order book data and news headline data, and the proposed model improved the accuracy by up to 17.66%p and the average by 14.47%p on average. In addition, we conducted a simulated investment with the proposed model and earned a minimum of $492.46 and a maximum of $2,840.93 depending on the stock for 21 business days.

A Research on the Books Selected in 'One Book, One City' Community Reading Promotion Campaign in Korea (국내 '한 책, 한 도시' 독서운동의 선정책에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to document the current state of 'One Book, One City' community reading campaign (Hereafter called 'One Book' reading campaign), launched in 2003 in Korea, and the characteristics of the selected books. For this research, the homepages, news and reports of a total of 1,170 public libraries and their local government, and several major institutions and organizations related to reading and culture were analyzed with the research method of content analysis and literature review. Also, online catalogs of the National Library of Korea and the National Library for Children and Young Adults were examined to identify the characteristics of 729 titles and 1,179 volumes of books selected in 57 'One Book' programs, as of 2021. The analysis of 57 'One Book' programs and those selected books shows the selection of more than one books in different age groups in more and more 'One Book' programs, lack of consistency in themes of those selected books, and preference for young adult books, new publications and bestselling novels. This trend has weakened individual 'One Book' programs' concentration on one book or one subject, but helped invite a diverse group of people with various interests. More in-depth analysis and explanation of the process of book selection and its appropriateness with the stated goals of 'One Book' programs are needed.

Records on Ginseng and Medical Book during the Goryeo Dynasty (고려 시대 인삼과 의약서에 대한 기록)

  • Korean ginseng, a special product of Korea, has been one of the most important exports since the era of the Three Kingdoms. However, not many records were kept about ginseng in Korea until the Goryeo Dynasty. This paper summarizes the records relating to international diplomatic relations and trade of ginseng in the Goryeo Dynasty and the medicinal books known to have been published at the time. During the Goryeo Dynasty, ginseng was actively transported to the neighboring countries of Bohai, Song, Wa, Later Jin, and Yuan as a diplomatic gift or as a trade item. Ginseng was mainly exported from Goryeo to these countries, but it was also received as a diplomatic gift from Bohai and Khitan. Arabian merchants came to Byeokran Port, a representative international trading port of Goryeo, and traded ginseng. After the Mongol invasion, the demand for ginseng in the Yuan Dynasty was excessive, which became a big social problem. During the Goryeo Dynasty, several medicinal books were published, including Jejungiphyobang, Eouuichwalyobang, Hyangyakgobang, Samhwajahyangyakbang, Hyangyak Hyemin Gyeongheombang, Hyangyak Gugeupbang, and Biyebaekyobang. Hyangyak Gugeupbang, which was reprinted during the Joseon Dynasty, has been handed down to the present time, although this has not been the case for the originals of the remaining books. Recently, some of the latter books have been restored through the study of the references in various medicinal books of later generations. While the medicinal books used in the royal court showed that a high proportion of the prescriptions containing ginseng, not a single prescription for ginseng has been found in theHyangyak Gugeupbang, which was mainly used for commoners. This is thought to be because ginseng was very rare and expensive at the time, so it was difficult for commoners to access it.

The Analysis of Educational Effect of The Horticultural Picture Books Focused on B.S. Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives (블룸(B.S. Bloom)의 교육목표에 따른 원예그림동화책과 교육적 효과분석)

  • This study aims at analyzing educational effects of the horticultural picture books, which are depending on B.S. Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives. After collecting various horticulture-related picture books, this study classified them by the B.S bloom's educational taxonomy. There were objectives of the cognitive domain, objectives of the affective domain, psychomotor domain in plants and gardening activities. And the cognitive domain, affective domain, psychomotor domain subdivided into the sub-region can learn from the horticulture picture books to teach the unique characteristics could be found. To know the teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of using picture books in the horticulture class, questionnaire were analyzed from the survey. As a result, by Bloom's educational taxonomy area they preferred children's books. Teacher think that fairy tale books promote the interest of the children and have the advantage of fostering creativity. In addition, an easy point to get in school, lack of hours in the effective education to help horticulture that was expected. The cognitions of most effective storytelling method of horticulture picture book was story immersion. And the effective activity after reading picture book was drawing picture. Also, the most effective teaching materials was a real-life picture.
