  • A study on the structures of the pharyngeal bones and teeth in two Korean ricefishes, Oryzias latipes and O. sinensis, was carried out to find out interspecfic differences. In the pharyngeal bones, both two species have a pair of upper pharyngeal bone (stilliform shape) and lower pharyngeal bone (rectangular shape). In the lower pharyngeal bones, in particular, the number of the row was 6 to 7 in O. latipes and 5 to 6 in O. sinensis. The pharyngeal teeth also showed different types in two species: O. latipes of a top-hooked type and O. sinensis of a conical type. Through this study, we confirmed that the two Korean ricefishes show distinctive characteristics in the structure of the pharyngeal teeth.

  • DICOM images of patellofemoral bones were converted into a stereolithography file, and a Unigraphics CAD program was used to create a CAD modeling in which there exists point, line and facet information. The modeling extraction of joint facets was performed by linking two adjacent points into lines in the stereolithography file by using the Unigraphics rapid spacing function and then linking the lines into facets to complete the entire modeling. This modeling extraction was performed based on the anatomical knowledge of joint facet directions. As a result, a personalized space modeling and solid modeling were produced for the joint facets of patellofemoral bones. This was followed by a CAM control computing operation of solid modeling on graphite materials and 5-axis machining of patellofemoral bones. That is the description of a method for a personalized implant modeling by using DICOM images of patellofemoral bones.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the stress distribution of bones surrounding the implant system to which both titanium and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) abutments are applied using a three-dimensional finite element analysis. Methods: The three-dimensional implant system was designed by the computer-aided design program (CATIA; Dassault Systemes). The discretization process for setting nodes and elements was conducted using the HyperMesh program (Altair), after finishing the design of each structure for the customized abutment implant system. The results of the stress analysis were drawn from the Abaqus program (Dassault Systèmes). This study applied 200 N of vertical load and 100 N of oblique load to the occlusal surface of a mandibular first molar. Results: Under external load application, the PEEK-modeled dental implant showed the highest von Mises stress (VMS). The lowest VMS was observed in the Ti-modeled abutment screws. In all groups, the VMS was observed in the crestal regions or necks of implants. Conclusion: The bones surrounding the implant system to which the PEEK abutment was applied, such as the cortical and trabecular bones, showed stress distribution similar to that of the titanium implant system. This finding suggests that the difference in the abutment materials had no effect on the stress distribution of the bones surrounding implants. However, the PEEK abutments require mechanical and physical properties improved for clinical application, and the clinical application is thought to be limited.

  • We examined the osteological development of the cranium, visceral skeleton, pectoral girdle, vertebral column, fins, and pterygiophore of small yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis cultured at the Jeju Fisheries Research Institute. At 5.89 mm NL (notochord length), the larvae already had ossified frontal and basioccipital bones, parasphenoids, and vomer in the cranium. All elements of the visceral skeleton except the metapterygoid were ossified at 5.89 mm NL. Preorbital bone was ossified at 8.11 mm SL (standard length), and suborbital bones were ossified at 12.90 mm SL. In the vertebral column, ossification proceeded from the first to last centrum. The urostyle ossified at 7.41 mm SL. The caudal skeleton ossified at 6.78 mm NL, along with three hypural bones. In the pectoral girdle, the cleithrum, supracleithrum, postcleithrum, and post-temporal bones ossified at 5.89 mm NL. Caudal fin ossification began at 6.19 mm SL and was complete at 7.16 mm SL. Dorsal and anal fin ossification began at 7.16 mm SL and was complete at 8.62 mm and 8.11 mm SL, respectively. Anal and dorsal pterygiophore bone ossification was complete at 9.86 mm and 11.54 mm SL, respectively, and that of the supraneural bones was complete at 9.60 mm SL.

  • Metastatic tumors to the jaw bones are uncommon. The most common metastatic tumors to the jaw bones are the breast, lung and kidney. In the jaw bones, the common location of the lesions is the mandible, and the posterior area of the mandible is more commonly affected. The radiographic appearance is quite variable. In this report, a very rare case of metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma to the mandible is presented. The patient had undergone a gastrectomy 3 years ago.

  • In the present study, tubular polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cortical bone mimics that simulate the cortical shell of long bones were used to validate the axial transmission technique for assessing the cortical thickness by measuring the ultrasonic velocities along the cortical shell of long bones. The ultrasonic velocities in the 9 PVC cortical bone mimics with wall thicknesses from 4.0 to 16.1 mm and inner diameters from 40 to 300 mm were measured as a function of the thickness by using a pair of custom-made transducers with a diameter of 12.7 mm and a center frequency of 200 kHz. In order to clarify the measured behavior, they were also compared with the predictions from a theory of guided waves in thin plates. This phantom study using the PVC cortical bone mimics provides useful insight into the dependencies of ultrasonic velocities on the cortical thickness in human long bones.

  • In this paper the impact force which occurs on each tooth of jaw-bones while masticating is calculated through the rigid body dynamic analysis. This analysis is done by ADAMS. The impact force calculated in this paper is required for the structural stress analysis of implant system which is needed for the implant system design. The analysis results show that the impact time decreases as the impact force increases, the largest impact force occurs on the front tooth and the impact force is almost normal to the tooth surface together with slight tangential force.

  • This study suggests the design of the functionally gradient composite, [0/90/0/core]$_s$ cross-ply laminate, to prevent stress concentration induced from the difference of rigidity between the bone and the artificial hip joint and to reinforce the wear property of the surface and the expectation of their mechanical properties. First, the four-point bending test is done about wet bones and dry bones to know the mechanical properties of the cortical bones. In result, the wet bone shows the viscoelastic behavior and the dry bone shows the elastic behavior. Moreover, we expect the properties of the proposed gradient composites as a function of carbon fiber volume fraction in each layer to apply Halpin-Tsai equation, CLPT(classical laminate plate theory), and Bernoulli beam theory etc. and decide the thickness ratio of each lamina in order to match Young's modulus of the anisotropic cortical bone with the proposed gradient composites.

  • This study was designed for the standard formulation of SULNONGTANG cooking method, I have performed a sensory evaluation and physical properties of conventional SULNONGTANG and Market SULNONGTANG. The results were as follows : 1. In case of conventional method, in term of the addition of ingredients, to maintain optimal nutrition and to achieve good appearance and taste from sliced meat (Pyoun Yuk) of the beef's head, brisket, tongue ana breast, the followings are recommended cooking methods 1) For beef's leg bones, lead, knee bones and tripe, it is reasonable to addition from the beginning and to boil them for 12~18 hours. 2) Sliced meat from the head should be prepared after 4 hours boiling. 3) Brisket, tongue and breast should be added 2 hours before cooking is finished. 2. In Market SULNONGTANG, taste was poorer than that of conventional SULNONGTANG. When the head is added to Market SULNONGTANG, taste was more desirable than those added hooves or knee bones.
