  • The film is prepared by electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECRCVD) employing CH$_4$ and H$_2$ gases. It is deposited by the control of microwave plasma power, gas flow ratio, deposition pressure, and In-situ thermal treatment temperature. The structure of a-C:H (hydrogenated amorphous carbon) thin film is analysed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The fraction sp$^3$ versus sp$^2$ bonding is very important to clear up the surface and interrace of a-C:H film properties such as nano-scale friction behavior. The sp$^3$ versus sp$^2$ bonding of a-C:H thin film is dependent on the deposition conditions, therefore. nano-scale friction behavior is dependent on the deposition conditions.

  • To investigate the effects of substrate on transverse-rupture strength(TRS) and bonding strength between substrate and TiC layer coated by CVD, two kinds of substrate (substrate A:WC-9.5wt%Co-MC*[low C], substrate B: WC-6wt% Co-MC*[high C] were studied in terms of Cobalt and C contents respectively. For preparation of test samples the coating parameters of deposition time, deposition temperature and deposition pressure were varied. The result show that the carbon contents in substrates have greater effects on the TRS of the CVD TiC coated cemented carbide than Co contents in substrates.

  • The a-C:H films have been grown on the glass substrate by PECVD method, where plasma was generated with a 60 Hz line power source. The carbonization is checked from peak intensities of D($sp^3$) and G($sp^2$) peaks in Raman spectra and is analyzed using the Gaussian convolution method of spectrum. Both the bonding strength of C-H and the ratio of $sp^3$ to $sp^2$ in bonding are found to be slightly dependent of partial pressure of $C_2H_2$.

  • Si surfaces exposed to CHF3/C2F6 gas plasmas ih reactive ion etching (RIE) have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). CHF3/C2F6 gas plasma exposure of Si surface leads to the deposition of residual film containing carbon and fluorine. The narrow scan spectra of C 1s show various bonding states of carbon as C-Si, C-F/H, C-CFx(x $\leq$ 3), C-F, C-F2, and C-F3. The chemical bonding states of fluorine are described with F-Si, F-C and F-O. And the oxygen and silicon are also detected. The effects of parameters for reactive ion etching as CHF3/C2F6 gas ratio, RF power, and pressure are investigated.

  • In these days, composite materials are applied to the military field like parts of air crafts, rockets, ammunitions and so on. As high pressure is loaded on the composite body, however, cracks or delamination phenomena can be occurred between layers of laminate. These cracks or delamination usually cause a deterioration of mechanical properties under the complicated loads. In this study, methods for improvement of the inter-laminar bonding strength of thick carbon/epoxy composite structures are suggested and discussed in terms of segment bending test.

  • Heated tool joining is a popular method for joining parts made from plastics and composite materials. The method is commonly known as butt fusion in the plastic pipe industry and this paper provides a short introduction to the basics of producing a good butt fusion joint. The function of each of the essential parts of the butt fusion equipment is described followed by a presentation of the important parameters of the bonding process in reference to a well-established interfacial pressure versus time curve. The butt fusion procedure is then outlined with good practices that detail the preparation of equipment and pipes to be joined as well as the fusion joining process.

  • The tungsten paste was printed on the surface of 92% alumina sheet which was made by type casting process. The printed tungsten was bonded on the Al2O3 by co-firing in reducing atmosphere. During the co-firing, the binder burn-out was easier in wet H2 atmosphere than in dry H2, which affected sintered density. In practically, the use of wet H2 above 100$0^{\circ}C$ was beneficial for density of alumina and bond strength. This phenomena occured more distinctly when atmosphere varied from dry H2 to wet H2 than varied dew point in wet H2. In wet H2, the improvement in bonding strength can be attributed to good glass migration into the metal layer due to inhibition of the tungsten particle growth, with increase of alumina density, at the temperatrue higher than 100$0^{\circ}C$.

  • This study has been conducted with the purpose of examining the fatigue crack growth characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ short fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composites made by squeeze casting process with different applied pressure and binder amount. Fatigue crack growth experiments have been performed under constant load amplitude method with a fixed load ratio. The rate of crack propagation was decreased with binder amount as well as applied pressure. Also fatigue crack growth path in matrix was changed from flat to rough mode with an increase of applied pressure. In the composites, fatigue crack was propagated to interface between matrix and reinforcement at 10MPa, but it was propagated to reinforcement at 20MPa. The major reason of thee result was considered that interfacial bonding force and microstructure of matrix were improved due to an increase of applied pressure. Localized ductile striation in the composites was observed at low growth rate region and such a phenominon was remarkable with an increase of applied pressure. At high growth rate region, the propensity of fracture appearance was changed from interfacial debonding to reinforcement fracture with an increase of applied pressure.
