  • This is a part of the extensive ongoing investigation being carried out by author to develop appropriate design procedure of the concrete member reinforced with FRP rebars instead of conventional steel rebars. This study presents the experimental results of a research programme to assess the structural characteristics of spliced rebar in reinforced concrete members with FRP reinforcement. The test variables are the diameter of FRP rebar and the embedment length. The development length (ld) was calculated according to the ACI 440 for FRP rebars in concrete. A total of 14 concrete beams reinforced with spliced FRP rebars and 4 reference beams reinforced with non-spliced FRP rebars were tested. The effects of bar size (10, 13, 16 and 19 mm) and splice length (from 0.72 to 1.58ld) on the bond strength were empirically evaluated. The test results indicate that a modification factor of 1.3 and 1.6 is relatively sufficient for the bond development length of glass FRP rebars in order to achieve an adequate tension lap splice length.

  • The load distribution in a ground anchor is very complex because it involves three different materials(soil, grout, and steel), which sometimes act as composite sections (bonded length) or separately (unbounded length). Therefore it is very hard to understand load transfer mechanism on the anchor. In order to understand the load transfer, it is essential to consider the load distribution In the three different materials. On these purposes, full scale anchor test is planned on the geotechnical site at Sunkyunkwan University Prior to the test, modeling and analyses of the load transfer mechanism were performed on the data from the case histories.

  • The fracture strength and fracture modes were studied in 3Y-TZP/NiNi bonding which change their interfacial structure with bonding condition. Average 4-point bending strength of 200 MPa to 400 MPa were achieved. The formation of Ti-oxide phase at the interface critically influenced the bonding strength and fracture mode. The fracture surface of Ti-oxide free interface contained multiphase in some case including ZrO2. From the result it was confirmed that in order to maximize the bonding strength crack deflection from interface to ceramic was required.

  • Based on the principle of complementary energy an analytical method is developed for determining thermal stress distribution in an thermal barrier coating. This method gives the stress distributions which satisfy the stress-free boundary conditions at the edge. Numerical examples are given in order to verify the method and to investigate the thickness effects of the ZrO$_2$-8wt%Y$_2$O$_3$ top coat on the integrity of thermal barrier coating consisted of IN738LC substrate and MCrAlY bond coat.

  • Roughness of the surface to be welded is one of the important factors affecting the weldabilities on the pressure welding. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of the surface roughness upon the welding process and the weldability of pressure welds, using Aluminium AA1050 plates treated by various surface polishing The results obtained are as following. 1. The optimum welding deformation is about 38(%)-42(%) in cold pressure weld. 2. The grinding work on the weld surface is superior to milling and paper polishing. 3. Weld pressure must be beyond $0.5kg/mm^2$ in order that the bond may be achieved.

  • In order to investigate the biological activity of protoberberine derivatives, they were synthesized four derivatives (1-4) of 7,8 adduct of cycloberberine, two derivatives (5, 6) treated with alkylamine or phenylamine, four compounds (7, 8) and (9, 10) adduct with 1,3-dichloroacetone and oxalychloride. Antibacterial activity of these synthesized compounds was tested.

  • This paper introduced truss model and one-way slab elastic Model to analyse flexure of unbonded prestressed concrete member. After cracking, we could determine concrete membrane depth, deflection and stress. In order to do that, an numerical example of simply supported one way slab which has non-external membrane support(s=0) is analysed. The analytical results using the analytical model were compared with several experimental results and were generally satisfied.

  • Calculated ionization potential, electron affinity, electron density and bond order of some thiophene derivatives have been obtained and correlated with the inhibition of corrosion produced by these substances as evaluated by polarization curves. It is apparent that such quantities as the electron density or ionization potential play an important role. The calculation was carried out by the Extended Huckel method for the series of substituted thiophene derivatives.

  • A kinetic study of the heterobimetallic dimer disruption of $PPN+^aCrMn(CO)_{10}$- by ligand L(L = CO, $PR_3$) is described. The rate was determined in several aprotic solvents. The results indicated that the reaction of $PPN+^aCrMn(CO)_{10}$- with $PR_3$ is of first order with respect to [$PPN+^aCrMn(CO)_{10}$-] and the heterolytic Cr-Mn bond dissociation energy is approximately 27 kcal/mol.
