  • This study assessed the contribution of heavy metals to total toxicity as well as the presence other toxic compounds before and after adding the chemical P to concurrently conducted bioassay tests of Daphnia magna and P. Phosphoreum. The following conclusions were drawn from this study : With excessive EDTA dosage, a toxicity reduction in Microtox would occur due to a metal-comples being formed. Microtox was far less sensitive than D. magna to heavy metal toxicity, but extended exposure time and reagent could increase the sensitivity.

  • Chitin, a polymer of N-acetylglucosamine ($\beta$-1,4 linked 2-acetamido-D-glucose), is a cellulose-like biopolymer present richly in the exoskeleton of crustaceans and in cell walls of fungi, insects and yeast. Chitosan is derived from chitin by deacetylation, to different degrees, in the presence of alkali. [l]. Recent studies for chitin and chitosan have been concentrated in bioactivities such as antitumor activity, immuno-enhancing effects, enhancing protective effects against infection with some pathogens in mice, and antimicrobial activeity [2]. • This paper presents a new iterative locally one-dimensional [mite-difference time-domain(LOD-FDTD) method that has a simpler formula than the original iterative LOD-FDTD formula[l]. There are fewer arithmetic operations than in the original LOD-FDTD scheme. This leads to a reduction of CPU time compared to the original LOD-FDTD method while the new method exhibits the same numerical accuracy as the iterative ADI-FDTD scheme. The number of arithmetic operations shows that the efficiency of this method has been improved approximately 20 % over the original iterative LOD-FDTD method.

  • This paper describes dynamic characteristics test of distance relay and current differential relay using Real Time Digital Simulator on double circuit transmission line. First, The double circuit T/L modeling on RTDS was proposed and the results from the proposed model were compared with those of PSS/E. This comparison shows the possibility of dynamic test using the RTDS. The relay included about 20 test items which are apt to include maloperation of protective relays in critical situations.

  • This paper describes the isolation of isoguanosine from Croton tiglium L. and its cytotoxic effect anginst several tumor cell lines in culture and newly reports that isoguanosine has an antitumor activity against implanted S-180 ascitic turmor mice. Isoguanosine is effective at the dose of $24mg/kg/day{\times}5$, with T/C value of 168%. Isoguanosine inhibits the gorwth of S-180 and Ehrich solid tumor in mice at the optimal doses of $96\; mg/kg/day{\times}12$ and $48\;mg/kg/day{\times}12$, with 1-T/C values of 65% and 60% respecively.

  • The above results indicate that vegetable crop production using vinyl houses continously increases. However, technical support and facility improvement are still insufficent to establish a full production system. In order to improve the cultural environment in facilities for better vegetable culture, several facters should be considered. 1. Facility design and arrangement should be made to improve micro-environments for crop growth and development because direction of facility and covering materials can affect the amount of light trasmitted into vinyl houses. 2. Cultivation of several leading varieties in each crop may not provide stable production and profit especially under undesirable environmental conditions. Thus, it is required to grow not only leading varieties but also other cultivars to decrease the economic losses. 3. Crops should be carefully managed when planted in early season not to experience low temperatures which induce growth retards. Early season cultivation requires proper selection of cultivars which are resistant to low temperture. 4. Active control of micro-environment in facilities should be made via improving the ventilation and irrigation systems.

  • This paper describes the results of structural test and finite element analysis for rubber wheel-type Automatic Guideway Transit(AGT) made of aluminum honeycomb sandwich composites with WR580/NF4000 glass-fabric epoxy laminate face sheets. The static tests of vehicle structure were conducted according to JIS E7l05. These static tests have been done under vertical load, compressive load and 3-point support load. The structural integrity of AGT vehicle structure was evaluated by displacement, stress obtained from LVDT and strain gauges, and natural frequency. And finite element analysis using Ansys v11.0 was done to compare with the results of static test. The result showed that the results of structural integrity for static test were in an good agreement with these of finite element analysis.

  • Methods are described for the design and fabrication of the sensor circuits on the polarographic oxygen sensing electrodes. The discussion includes: a method for the +5V single-supply driving for the sensor circuits, a method of low power comsumption for the front-end electronics. Typical polarograms for the commercial DO probes using this sensor circuits are presented. High accuracy of the I to V conversion using the circuits is verified.
