An anodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique is used to create a uniform TiO2 thin film coating on boiling thin steel plates (1.1 mm by 90 mm). All of the effective parameters except time of the EPD method are kept constant. To investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on the critical heat flux (CHF), the test specimens were irradiated in a gamma cell to different doses ranging from 100 to 300 kGy, and then SEM and BET analysis were performed. For each coated specimen, the contact angle and capillary length were measured. The specimens were then tested in a boiling pool for CHF and boiling heat transfer coefficient. It was observed that irradiation significantly decreases the maximum pore diameter while it increases the porosity, pore surface area and pore volume. These surface modifications due to gamma irradiation increased the CHF of the nano-coated surfaces compared to that of the unirradiated surfaces. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of the nano-coated surfaces irradiated at 300 kGy increased from 83 to 160 kW/(㎡ K) at 885 kW/㎡ wall heat flux by 100%. The CHF of the irradiated (300 kGy) and unirradiated surfaces are 2035 kW/㎡ and 1583 kW/㎡, respectively, an increase of nearly 31%.

Convective boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-22 were obtained in a flat extruded aluminum tube with $D_h=1.41mm$. The test range covered mass flux from 200 to $600kg/m^{2}s$, heat flux from 5 to $15kW/m^2$ and saturation temperature from $5^{\circ}C\;to\;15^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer coefficient curve shows a decreasing trend after a certain quality (critical quality). The critical quality decreases as the heat flux increases, and as the mass flux decreases. The early dryout at a high heat flux results in a unique 'cross-over' of the heat transfer coefficient curves. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the mass flux increases. At a low quality region, however, the effect of mass flux is not prominent. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the saturation temperature increases. The effect of saturation temperature, however, diminishes as the heat flux decreases. Both the Shah and the Kandlikar correlations un-derpredict the low mass flux and overpredict the high mass flux data.
The evaporative heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ (R-744) in a horizontal tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator (test section). The test section consists of a smooth, horizontal stainless steel tube of inner diameter of 7.75 mm. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 500 kg/m$^2$s, saturation temperature of -5 to 5$^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 40kW/m$^2$. The test results showed the heat transfer of $CO_2$ has a greater effect on nucleate boiling more than convective boiling. Mass flux of $CO_2$ does not affect nucleate boiling too much, and the effect of mass flux on evaporative heat transfer of $CO_2$ is much smaller than that of refrigerant R-22 and R-134a. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporative heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develope reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporative heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.
In this research, Rayleigh instability of gas-liquid flow in annular pipe is studied in film boiling using viscous potential flow. Viscous potential flow is a kind of approximation of gas-liquid interface considering velocity field as potential including viscosity. A dispersion relation is obtained including the effect of heat and mass transfer and viscosity. New expression for dispersion relation in film boiling and critical wave number is obtained. Viscosity and heat and mass transfer have a stabilizing effect on instability and its effect appears in maximum growth rate and critical wave number. And the existence of marginal stability region is shown.
Pool boiling critical heat flux (CHF) have been investigated using plate type test sections with different widths (3 cm & 4 cm) and lengths (10 cm, IS cm & 20 cm) under various incli- nation angles. As the inclination angle increases from $0^{\circ}$ (horizontally facing downward plate) to $30^{\circ}$, CHF sharply increases. After that angle, CHF gradually increases with the increase of the inclination angle. There must be a transition angle between $0^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, at which the CHF increase rate remarkably changes. According to the comparison of present and previous ex- periments, the transition angle may be affected by heater size and increase with the increase of heater size. The size effect of heated surface on CHF is noticeable in the L15 & L20 series and W4 series; however, it seems to be difficult to find the size effect in L10 series and W3 series.
In the boiling heat transfer mechanism, CHF(critical heat flux) is the significantly important parameter of the system. So, many researchers have been struggling to enhance the CHF of the system in enormous methods. Recently, there were lots of researches about enormous CHF enhancement with the nanofluids. In that, the pool boiling CHF in nanofluids has the significantly increased value compared to that in pure water because of the deposition of the nanoparticle on the heater surface in the nanofluids. The aim of this study is the comparison of the effect of the nanoparticle deposited surface and the modified surface which has the similar morphology and made by MEMS fabrication. The nanoparticle deposited surface has the complex structures in nano-micro scale. Therefore, we fabricated the surfaces which has the similar wettability and coated with the micro size post and nano structure. The experiment is performed in 3 cases : the bare surface with 0.002% water-ZnO nanofluids, the nanoparticle deposited surface with pure water and the new fabricated surface with pure water. The contact angle, a representative parameter of the wettability, of the all 3 cases has the similar value about 0 and the SEM(scanning electron microscope) images of the surfaces show the complex nano-micro structure. From the pool boiling experiment of the each case, the nanoparticle deposited surface with pure water and the fabricated surface with pure water has the almost same CHF value. In other words, the CHF enhancement of the nanoparticle deposited surface is the surface effect. It also shows that the new fabricated surface follows the nanoparticle deposited surface well.
An analysis of convective boiling heat transfer for refrigerant mixtures is performed for an annular flow to investigate the degradation of the heat transfer rate. Annular flow is selected in this study because a great portion of the evaporator in the refrigeration and air conditioning system is known to be in the annular flow regime. Mass transfer effect due to composition difference between liquid and vapor is included in this analysis, which is considered to be one of driving forces for the mass transfer at the interface. Due to the concentration gradient at the interface the mass transfer is interfered, so is the evaporative heat transfer at the interface. The mass transfer resistance makes the interface temperature slightly higher and, as a result, the heat transfer coefficients decrease compared with those without mass transfer effects. The degradatioin of the heat transfer rate reaches its maximum at a certain composition. The composition difference between vapor core and vapor at the interface has a direct effect on the temperature difference between the vapor core and the interface and the degradation of the heat transfer rate. Correction factor $C_{F}$ for the mixture effects is added to the correlation for pure substances and the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients can be calculated using the modified equation.n.
In this work, pool boiling heat transfer coefficients(HTCs) of R22, R123, R134a, and R245fa are measured on both horizontal plain and 26 fpi low fin tubes. The pool boiling temperature is maintained at $7^{\circ}C$ and heat flux is varied from 80 $kW/m^2$ to 10 $kW/m^2$ with an interval of 10 $kW/m^2$. Wall temperatures are measured directly by thermocouples inserted through holes of 0.5 mm diameter. Test results show that HTCs of high vapor pressure refrigerants are usually higher than those of low pressure fluids in both plain and low fin tubes. On a plain tube, HTCs of R245fa are 23.3% higher than those of R123 while on a 26 fpi low fin tube, HTCs of R245fa are 46.3% higher than those of R123. The fin effect is more prominent with low vapor pressure refrigerants than with high vapor pressure ones due to a sweeping effect.
We devised calibration procedure for industrial thermometers by a comparison method at the boiling point of nitrogen (${\sim}-196^{\circ}C$). The uncertainty of the calibration was 4 mK (k = 2). As experimentally demonstrated in this work, the effect of the atmospheric pressure on the boiling point of nitrogen can be easily detected by the thermometer. Therefore, when the boiling point of nitrogen is used for calibration of thermometer by comparison, either a reference thermometer must be used to provide the reference temperature or the effect of atmospheric pressure should be carefully considered. The use of a copper block with a large thermal mass soaked into the liquid nitrogen was proven to be more reliable, and the stability of the temperature immersed into the copper block was 1.4 mK. The temperatures at the thermometer wells, evaluated by the crossed-measurement method to compensate for the inaccuracy of the thermometers and the linear drift of the temperature of the copper block, were equivalent within 0.23 mK of standard uncertainty.

This work was conducted to evaluate the effect of dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on barley straw at boiling temperature and fractionation of its biomass components into lignin, hemicellulose, and reducing sugars. To this end, various concentrations of NaOH (0.5% to 2%) were applied for pretreatment of barley straw at $105^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies revealed that 2% NaOH-pretreated barley straw exposed cellulose fibers on which surface granules were abolished due to comprehensive removal of lignin and hemicellulose. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) result showed that the crystalline index was increased with increased concentration of NaOH and found a maximum 71.5% for 2% NaOH-pretreated sample. The maximum removal of lignin and hemicellulose was 84.8% and 79.5% from 2% NaOH-pretreated liquor, respectively. Reducing sugar yield was 86.5% from 2% NaOH-pretreated sample using an enzyme dose containing 20 FPU of cellulase, 40 IU of ${\beta}$-glucosidase, and 4 FXU of xylanase/g substrate. The results of this study suggest that it is possible to produce the bioethanol precursor from barley straw using 2% NaOH at boiling temperature.
