This study describes thermal performance of heating and cooling demonstration system using ETSC(Evacuated tubular solar collector) installed at Seo-gu art center of Kwangju. For demonstration study, a reading room with about $350m^2$ was heated and cooled using that system. The demonstration system was consisted of ETSCs, storage tank, hot water supply tank, subsidiary boiler, and subsidiary tank. From January to March in 2006, demonstration test were performed with 4 control mode to find the optimum control condition for solar thermal system. After experiments and analysis, this study found that solar thermal system of control mode IV was corresponded to 78% for the hot water supply and 49% for space heating.
AISI 316 steel has been used extensively for heater and boiler tube of the structural plants such as power, chemical and petroleum plants under severe operating conditions. Usually, material degradation due to microcrack or precipitation of carbides and segregation of impurity elements, is occured by damage accumulated for long-term service at high temperature in this material. In this study, the effect of aging time on fracture toughness was investigated to evaluate the measurement of material degradation. The elastic-plastic fracture toughness behaviour of AISI 316 steel pipe aged at $550^{\circ}C$for 1h-10000h (the aged material) was characterized using the single specimen J-R curve technique and eletric potential drop method at normal loading rate(load-line displacement speed of 0.2mm/min) in room temperature and air environment. The fracture toughness data from above experiments is compared with the $J_{in}$ obtained from predicted values of crack initiation point using potential drop method.
Radiant floor heating systems with capillary tubes are energy saving systems in which hot water is circulated into capillary tube with a small diameter. In this study, the heating performance of capillary tube system is investigated in an experimental study and a simulation model. The results of the study showed that, the capillary tube radiant floor heating system maintains a more stable floor surface temperature in comparison a PB pipe system. In terms of energy consumption, the capillary tube radiant floor heating system proved to be more efficient than the PB pipe heating system at $40^{\circ}C$ of low temperature hot water supply. The difference between water temperature and room temperature can be held low for heating which saves energy. Low temperature radiant floor heating system with capillary tubes have significant advantages such as health improvement, low energy cost, optimum use of heat source(boiler) and higher operational efficiency.
The modified 9Cr-1Mo steel (P91 steel) is very popular as a boiler tube material of the USC (Ultra-Supercritical) power plants. The steels were tempered in the temperature range of 400 to $650^{\circ}C$ and the mechanical tests, such as impact and hardness tersts were performed at the room temperature for the tempered steels. A drop in the impact value (embrittlement) and the hardeness increase were simultanously observed in the range of temperature between $475^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, particularly at $550^{\circ}C$. TEM observation shows the hardening was caused by $M_2C$, resulting in the embrittlement. And the maximum volume fraction of $M_3C$ was also observed at $550^{\circ}C$, Therefore, the embrittlement seems to be caused by both the $M_2C$ and $M_3C$.
This study describes thermal performance of solar cooling and hot water for demonstration system with ETSC(Evacuated tubular solar collector) installed at Seo-gu art center of Kwangju. For demonstration study, a reading room with about 350㎡ was heated and cooled with the solar system. The system was consisted of ETSCs, storage tank, hot water supply tank, subsidiary boiler, subsidiary tank, absorption chiller, chiller storage tank, and cooling tower. The results of the experimental study indicated that the total solar energy gain as daily performance on a sunny day (August 25, 2007) with total daily radiation of $606\;W/m^2$ was 671 kWh, the collecting efficiency of 55%. In the case of supplies to heat source more than $83^{\circ}C$, cooling time operated by solar was driven 8.8 hours, cooling energy generated by solar system was 179 kWh and the solar cooling fraction was 79.2%, and hot water supplied with surplus heat source by the solar system was 201 kWh.
This study describes thermal performance of heating and cooling demonstration system using ETSC(Evacuated tubular solar collector) installed at Seo-gu art center of Kwangju. For demonstration study, a reading room with about $331m^2$ was heated and cooled using that system.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) used on ships and to consider measures for preventing worker exposure to asbestos fibers. Methods: A total of 17 ships including 16 ships under repair and a ship under construction at shipyards in Korea were investigated. Bulk samples were collected from suspected ACMs on engine exhaust pipes, boiler steam pipes, generator exhaust pipes, and etc. in ships in order to identify the presence of ACMs. Types and contents of asbestos were determined using polarized light microscopy (PLM). Results: ACMs were found from 14 ships out of 17 ships investigated. Only chrysotile asbestos was found from all samples. ACMs were mainly found from samples collected at the exhaust pipes of the engine, generator and incinerator, and boiler steam pipes where exhaust gases or steam of high temperature pass through. In most cases, types of ACMs were asbestos-containing fabrics such as asbestos tape. Friable ACMs were also found in some cases. Use of ACMs on ships was relevant to built time and owner of the ships rather than type and tonnage of the ships. Conclusions: ACMs were found from most ships built prior to 2000s. Therefore, measures for preventing asbestos-related diseases such as preparation of asbestos map on the ship and installation of warning signs, hazard communication with workers (ship-repairing workers, engine room workers and etc.), and follow-up for worker's health management are needed.
A full-scope replica type simulator whose MCR(main control room) has the same features and operation functions as MCR of the reference power plant has been developed for a fossil power plant. This simulator was developed with the model of Poryung Fossil Power Plant #3,4 which is the standard model of the Korean fossil power plant. It is the first localized simulator for the supercritical, variable boiler pressure type fossil power plant. The simulator provides various kinds of accidents which are in normal plant operation and thus enables operators to recover or reduce possible damages. To design and develop this kind of simulator, we need to integrate high technologies such as system analysis, plant operation and system integration of mechanics, physics, computer science. CASE(Computer Aided Software Engineering) tools were used to develop the dynamic model. This simulator will greatly contribute to the improvement of the safety and efficiency of the fossil power plant by implementing operator training. In this paper, the outline of software and hardware configuration and characteristics of the simulator are described, and the results of 30%, 50%, 75%, 100% load operation test will be discussed.
