A Study of On-line Cleaning Method for Increasing Efficiency in a Combustor (연소로 효율증진을 위한 on-line 세정 방법에 관한 연구)

  • An Experimental study of cleaning solution has been performed on a high capacity steam boiler burning heavy fuel oil to on-line cleaning of deposit. The deposit is mixture of soot, slag, ash, metal oxide and clinker. The traditional technology of deposit cleaning was carried hand-crafted. The conventional technology of boiler cleaning method is mechanical removal by the worker while the boiler shut down operation. In this experiment, the deposit of mixture of soot, slag, ash, metal oxide and clinker has been removed by the cleaning agents without shut down of boiler burning. This study found out the optimum cleaning solution composition. The best results have been obtained when the mixture of ammonium nitrate and $MgNO_3$ were used in cleaning solution. The various transition metal effect was investigated for optimum mixing condition. In this research, the metal compound additive of the clean solution compoition was obtained. The combustion efficiency was improved by on-line cleaning with derived clean solution compoition. On-line cleaning method prevents the fouling and corrosion in the boiler and heat exchanger.

Performance analysis of an organic Rankine cycle for waste heat recovery of a passenger car (승용차 폐열 회수용 유기 랭킨 사이클 성능 분석)

  • Applicability of organic Rankine cycle for a passenger car with 3.5 L gasoline engine to convert low grade waste heat to useful shaft power has been numerically studied. Working fluid is R134a, and the Rankine cycle is composed of boiler for recovering engine cooling water heat, super heater for recovering exhaust gas heat, scroll expander for converting waste heat to shaft power, condenser for heat emission, internal heat exchanger, and feed pump. Assuming efficiencies of 90% for the heat exchangers, 75% for the scroll expander, and 80% for the feed pump, the Rankine cycle efficiency of 5.53% was calculated at the vehicle speed of 120 km/hr. Net expander shaft output after subtracting the power required to run the pump was 3.22 kW, which was equivalent to 12.1% improvement in fuel consumption. About the same level of improvement in the fuel consumption was obtained over the vehicle speed range of 60 km/hr~120 km/hr.

A Study on the Boiling Heat Transfer Characteristics Using Loop Type Thermosyphon

  • Flexible two-phase thermosyphons are devices that can transfer large amounts of heat flux with boiling and condensation of working fluid resulting from small temperature differences. A flexible two-phase thermosyphon consists of a evaporator, an insulation unit, and a condenser. The working fluid inside the evaporator is evaporated by heating the evaporator in the lower part of the flexible two-phase thermosyphon and the evaporated steam rises to the condenser in the upper part to transfer heat in response to the cooling fluid outside the tube. The resultant condensed working fluid flows downward along the inside surface of the tube due to gravity. These processes form a cycle. Using R134a refrigerant as the working fluid of a loop type flexible two-phase thermosyphon heat exchanger, an experiment was conducted to analyse changes in boiling heat transfer performances according to differences in the temperature of the oil for heating of the evaporator, the temperature variations of the refrigerant, and the mass flows. According to the results of the present study, the circulation rate of the refrigerant increased and the pressure in the evaporator also increased proportionally as the temperature of the oil in the evaporator increased. In addition, the heat transfer rate of the boiler increased as the temperature of the oil in the evaporator increased.

  • In the consideration of the problem occurred by certain return bender brazing welding works that depend only on handworks, the automatization of the whole production line is impossible due to the high dependency of skillful workers. In addition, it is difficult to establish a standardization due to the various heat exchanger model and irregular amount of orders, and the fault reduction is also impossible due to the severe difference in brazing conditions. It is necessary to develop a method, which quantitively analyzes the problem existed in this manual brazing welding of return benders and technically solves that problem, and to lead the improvement of the productivity and cost reduction in order to increase the business competitive power. Then, this will contribute the technical development of automatic welding for Korea's heat exchanger businesses. Thus, this study develops an automatic technology, which automatically controls the flame strength using digital control methods, for various models and produces a sample model. It is possible to increase the productivity and produce uniformed and qualified products by solving the problem existed in manual processes using the developed automatic return bender brazing system. In addition, the brazing condition can be automatically controlled according to the model and line speed, and such an economical operation can reduce the production cost. The developed system is expected to future applications not only heat exchangers in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning, but also other various industrial fields that apply heat exchangers, such as car and boiler industries.

A Study on the Performance Evaluation of Hybrid Energy System with Geothermal and Solar Heat Sources (지열-태양열원 복합시스템의 성능평가에 관한 연구)

  • The present study concerns the annual performance evaluation of a hybrid-renewable energy system with geothermal and solar heat sources for hot water, heating and cooling of the residential buildings. The hybrid energy system consists of ground source heat pump of 2 RT for cooling, solar collectors of $4.8m^2$, storage tank of 250 liters and gas fired backup boiler of 11.6 kW. The averaged coefficients of performance of geothermal heat pump system during cooling and heating seasons are measured as 4.1 and 3.5, respectively. Also solar fraction for hot water is measured as 35 percent. Overall, the results shows that the hybrid-renewable energy system satisfactorily operated under all climatic conditions.

  • The object of this study was to develop an economic assessment program for the optimal design of the cogeneration systems composed of combining engine, generator, waste heat recovery exchanger, absorption chiller, and boiler, etc. The energy demand categorized by electric power, heating, cooling and water supply was determined by statistical data of the existing cogeneration systems. An economic assessment was performed by comparing the total cost of cogeneration system with that of non-cogeneration system. The total cost was evaluated by adding initial investment to operational cost considering efficiency of equipment, cost of equipment, fuel and electricity. To confirm the validity of the developed program, a hotel building with an area of $127,960m^2$ was selected, and the simulated results were compared with the measured data. The difference between the simulated and the measured values for the selected hotel building was approximately 12% for annual electric consumption.

The Optimization of Cylindrical Perforated Burner for Condensing Gas Boiler (콘덴싱 가스보일러용 원통형 다공버너의 최적화 연구)

  • The objective of performing this study is to develop low emission condensing gas boiler. To reduce NOx and CO, three reasonable distances between burner and heat exchanger were decided through the experiments of model plane burner. Three burners with different diameter were made and then emission characteristics were examined. The optimum burner geometry was determined from flame stability, pollutant emission characteristics and applicability to the practical boiler system. In the domain of equivalence ratio 0.68~0.85, turn-down ratio of the burner designed by this research was extended to a wider range of 5 : 1. Thermal efficiency of the boiler developed by this study reached to 97% (LHV basis) of heating water efficiency at heating load of 20,000 kcal/hr when fueled by both of LNG or LPG. Emission ($O_2$=0%, wet basis) of NOx and CO concentration was 26 ppm and 85 ppm when fueled by LNG, 41 ppm and 113 ppm when fueled by LPG respectively.

Comparison of Combustion Characteristics With and Without Water Tube Simulating Heat Exchanger in Two Sections Porous Media Burner (2단 다공성 매체버너에서 열교환기를 모사한 수관 유무에 따른 연소 특성 비교)

  • In this study, the experimental studies were conducted to analyzing characteristics of combustion and flame stabilizing according to with and without water tube in boiler. The burner has consisted of SiC foam where has the location of submerged flame between a ceramic board acting as flash-back arrestor. Porous burner is also insulated to minimize heat loss in the radial direction. In the condition of fixed equivalence ratio, the flame mode was divided into three stability zones by the flow rate. The main factor for blow-off and flash-back depends on mixture flow rate. Consequently, the case of burner with water-tube has higher NOx emissions than without case. This result explains that the presence of water-tube makes the heat loss resistant to ambient temperature with increasing of NOx. This tendency was proved by predicting the relationship between O2 emission and NO production rate, and by analysing temperature profiles.

  • This paper presents a new conceptual electromagnetic induction eddy current-based stainless steel plate spiral type heater for heat exchanger or Dual Packs Heater in hot water producer, boiler steamer and super heated steamer, which is more suitable and acceptable for new generation consumer power applications. In addition, all active clamped edge resonant PWM high frequency inverter using trench gate IGBTs power module can operate under a principle oi zero voltage soft communication with PWM is developed and demonstrated for a high efficient Induction heated hot water producer and boiler in the consumer power applications. This consumer induction heater power appliance using active clamp soft switching PWM high frequency inverter is evaluated and discussed on the basis of the simulation and experimental results.

Heat Pump System Using Heated Effluent of Thermal Power Generation Plant as a Heat Source (해수를 이용한 화력발전소 폐열회수 히트펌프 시스템)

  • In South Korea the gross generation and heated effluent of power generation plant was 259 TWh and 4.73 billion tons in 2008. And then the waste heat from power generation was 388 TWh. It shows that the efficiency of thermal power generation plant is about 40%. Therefore to reduce $CO_2$ emission from thermal power generation plant, the energy of this heated effluent must be reused to heat buildings or farm facilities. In South Korea horticultural facilities of about 25% are heated in winter season. Total area of greenhouses which are heated is about 13,000 ha. Total heat amount needed to warm greenhouse of 13,000 ha in winter season is only 3.4% of total waste heat from power generation plant. In this study a heat pump system was designed to reuse the waste heat from power generation. Especially new heat exchanger was developed to recover the thermal energy from waste water and this model considered anti-corrosion against sea water and low cost for economic feasibility. This heat recovery system was installed in mango growing greenhouse around thermal power generation plant in Seogwipo-city, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. The result of preliminary test shows that the heating cost of about 90% is saved as compared to boiler using tax free light oil as a fuel.
