  • This study is to investigate the effects of the physical activity and intake of improved food levels on male body compositions. Forty men were assigned to a percentage of body fat (PBF) group (20 men with physical exercise and food) and CONTROL group (20 men with exercise, food intake is free) for this six-month study. An aerobic capacity test to measure maximum oxygen consumption ($VO_2$ max) was performed to precisely determine the exercise intensities during the experimental conditions. After exercise and food control, the body weight of 20s with exercise and food (A) and only exercise (B) decreased about 2.3 kg and 0.4 kg after 6 months, respectively. If the p-values were 0.697(between baseline and 3 months), 0.535(between 3 months and 6 months), and 0.617(between baseline and 6 months), respectively, then 20s men had evidence of that a significant main effect does not exist amongst the observations of the outcome or within-weights. Their skeletal muscle mass (SMM) of both groups increased slightly through exercise. Although the decrease in total body weight of 30s was correlated with the increase in SMM, there was not shown significant. While total body water decreased in 20s, 40s, and 50s except 30s men, all other values did not shown significant differences. The physical activity and intake of improved food levels were contributed with lost a lot of weight, decrease of SMM and body fat.

  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a proven biomarker for the monitoring of changes in antioxidant and anti-inflammation capability of body fluids. The beneficial virtues of HDL are highly dependent on its lipids and protein compositions, and their ratios. In normal state, the HDL particle is enriched with lipids and several HDL-associated enzymes, which are responsible for its antioxidant activity. Lower HDL-cholesterol levels (<40 mg/dL) have been recognized as an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease, as well as being a known component of metabolic syndrome. Functional and structural changes of HDL have been recognized as factors pivotal to the evaluation of HDL-quality. In this review, I have elected to focus on the functional and structural correlations of HDL and the roles of HDL-associated apolipoproteins and enzymes. Recent clinical applications of HDL have also been reviewed, particularly the therapeutic targeting of HDL metabolism and reconstituted HDL; these techniques represent promising emerging strategies for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, for drug or gene therapy.

  • In this paper, we experimented on the deterioration process of power supply cords and analyzed the heating temperature of each part of those cords. We also analyzed the surface states, metallurgical structures surface structures and compositions of the wire melted by over-current. In the results of the analyses, the covering began to be deteriorated from the inside. The heating temperature of extension cord was higher than that of plug body. The dendrite structures appeared at the melted wire. By the SEM and EDS analyses, the dendrite structure showed the growth of copper oxide. We found out the characteristics of PVC insulated flexible cords by over-current from the above experiments and analyses. These results may be useful data in the analyses of deterioration causes of power supply cords.

  • The biologically active peptidoglycan was purified form the alkali fraction of the fruiting bodies of Ganoderma lucidum and the composition of the peptidoglycan was investigated by conventional analyses. The alkali-extracted peptidoglycan showed differences in chemical compositions from the water-extracted. The alkali-extracted peptidoglycan contained 6.9% protein and 75.9% carbohydrates composed mainly of $\beta$-glucose, mannose, and $\alpha$-glucose. The molecular weight range of the peptidoglycan was determined as 2,000 kDa-17 kDa. The peptidoglycan is considered to be a hybrid molecule of polysaccaride chains covalently bound as a side chain to the polypeptide core.

  • Binary black hole mergers are one of the important candidate of gravitational wave (GW) emission. Recently a successful GW observation was done by LIGO team, but it is still uncertain how many GW signals will be observable. In this research, we perform simplified N-body simulations containing three mass components, ordinary stars with two kind of stellar mass black holes. Various BH compositions are tested to investigate the effect of BH mass function on binary formation rate. As a result, we find the binary formation rate is not much affected by BH mass function and always around 30 %, but the detectable merging binaries are largely depend on higher mass BH population.

  • The electrical conductivity of compositions in the system $CaO-ZrO_2$ has been measured by 2-probe tech-nique in the temperature range 350~75$0^{\circ}C$. The composition of maximum conductivity in this system is within the cubic solid-solution region close to low-calcia cubic solid-solution phase boundary. The results are as follows : 1) The maximum conductivity was found 13mol CaO in zirconia. 2) As the CaO content was increased from 13 to 21 mol% the electrical conductivity decreased for any given temperature and the activation energy increased. 3) As the firing temperature and soaking time was increased the electrical conductivity increased and activation energy decreased.

  • Calcium phosphate ceramic composites, consisting of hydroxyapatite(HA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP), were fabricated by solid state sintering in order to investigate the effect of their initial compositions on microstructural evolutions and biocompatibility. All the sintered calcium phosphate ceramics exhibited almost full densification, while the grain growth of the composites increased with an increasing TCP content in the green body. The TCP phase transformed into a Ca-deficient HA phase during sintering via the diffusion of calcium ions from the HA phase into the TCP phase. The phases formed in the composites significantly affected the biocompatibility of the composites. The HA-matrix ceramic composites with TCP had a better cellular response than the pure HA ceramics, presumably due to the newly formed Ca-deficient HA.

  • Objectives : The object of this study was to observe the effects of Hwangryungeehwang-tang (HRGHT), which has traditionally been used in Korean medicine for treating diabetes, by administering aqueous extracts to streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Methods : Three different dosages of HRGHT extracts were orally administered once a day for 28 days from 3 weeks after streptozotocin treatment (60 mg/kg, single intraperitoneally administered). 6 groups, of 8 rats per group were used in the present study, selected 3 weeks after streptozotocin treatment based on blood glucose levels and body weights. Changes to the body weights, blood glucose levels, serum low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were observed, as well as changes on the pancreatic, hepatic and kidney malondialdehyde (MDA) contents for lipid peroxidation and glutathione contents for antioxidant effects. The results were compared with a potent antioxidant silymarin 100 mg/kg, of which the effects on streptozotocin-induced diabetes and related complications are already confirmed. Results : Significant decrease of blood glucose levels, serum LDL, total cholesterol, triglyceride levels, pancreatic, hepatic and renal MDA contents and significant increase of body weights, serum HDL levels, pancreatic, hepatic and renal GSH contents were detected in HRGHT extracts 100 and 200 mg/kg administered groups as compared to the streptozotocin control group. The lowest dosage of HRGHT treated group, 50 mg/kg, did not show any favorable effects as compared with the streptozotocin control. Conclusions : HRGHT has favorable effects on diabetes and related hyperlipidemia. Therefore, more detailed mechanism studies should be conduced in future with efficacy tests of individual herbal compositions of HRGHT and screening of the biological active compounds in the herbs.
