  • The compressible laminar and turbulent viscous flows on a slender body in supersonic speed as well as subsonic speed have been numerically simulated at high angle of attack. The steady and time-accurate compressible thin-layer Navier-Stokes code based on an implicit upwind-biased LU-SGS algorithm has been developed and specifically applied at angles of attack of 20, 30 and 40 dog, respectively. The modified eddy-viscosity turbulence model suggested by Degani and Schiff was used to simulate the case of turbulent flow. Any geometric asymmetry and numerical perturbation have not been intentionally or artificially imposed in the process of computation. The purely numerical results for laminar and turbulent cases, however, show clear asymmetric formation of vortices which were observed experimentally. Contrary to the subsonic results, the supersonic case shows the symmetric formation of vortices as indicated by the earlier experiments.

  • Vortices terminating at free surface have been investigated extensively. however. are focused on surface parallel vortices and little has been known about surface normal vortex or columnar vortex. Visualized experimental results utilizing LlF technique are discussed for the purpose of characterization of columnar vortex interacting with a clean and a contaminated free surfaces and a solid body interface in the present investigation. The results reveal that surface tension changes due to surface contamination although bulk viscosity remains constant and eventually the behavior of a columnar vortex interacting with a contaminated free surface and a solid body interface are totally different from the clean free surface case.

  • Using a semi-circled blunt body model, the geometrical effects of injection hole on the turbine blade leading edge film cooling are investigated. The film cooling characteristics of two shaped holes (laterally- and streamwise-diffused holes) and three cylindrical holes with different lateral injection angles, 30°, 45°, 60°, respectively, are compared with those of cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle experimentally and numerically. Kidney vortices, which decrease the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness, appear on downstream of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. At downstream of the two shaped holes have better film cooling characteristics than the cylindrical one. Instead of kidney vortices, single vortex appears on downstream of injection holes with lateral injection angle. The adiabatic film cooling effectiveness is symmetrically distributed along the lateral direction downstream of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. But, at downstream of the cylindrical holes with lateral injection angle, the distribution of adiabatic film cooling effectiveness in the lateral direction shows asymmetric nature and high adiabatic film cooling effectiveness regions are more widely distributed than those of the cylindrical hole with no lateral injection angle. As the blowing ratio increases, also, the effects of hole shapes and injection angles increase.

  • A shrouded rotating disk airflow has a simple figure on geometric basis, but has various and complicated forms of flow. This flow type can be applied to many turbo devices such as information storage device(optical disk). Circumferential velocity frequency in the middle plane between disk and shroud wall is measured using laser Doppler velocimeter. Solid body region of flow was founded when low Reynolds number relatively. Through the informations of the experimental results. we could examine the number and distribution of the vortices. When Reynolds number $3.80{\times}10^5$ there is a dominant frequency of which vortices number is 5.

  • The velocity and pressure fields of a ship's Weis-Fogh type propulsion mechanism are studied in this paper using an advanced vortex method. The wing (NACA0010 airfoil) and channel are approximated by source and vortex panels. and free vortices are introduced away from the body surfaces. The viscous diffusion of fluid is represented using the core-spreading model to the discrete vortices. The velocity is calculated on the basis of the generalized Biot-Savart law and the pressure field is calculated from an integral, based on the instantaneous velocity and vorticity distributions in the flow field. Two-dimensional unsteady viscous flow calculations of this propulsion mechanism are shown. and the calculated results agree qualitatively with the measured thrust and drag due to un-modeled large fluctuations in the measured data.

  • Vortex shedding from a circular cylinder is simulated by means of the discrete vortex method. The shear layer emanating from the separation point is approximated as a sheet vortex which is in turn represented by a sequence of discrete vortices. The strength of these vortices is calculated from the vorticity shedding rate and introduced at a small distance off the side ($\Theta=\pm\pi/2$) of the cylinder surface in regular time step. Sheet vortex cutting, rediscretization and replacement of vortex by vortex segment are put to use to enhance stability of the sheet vortex evolution. The simulated vortex distribution pattern very well reproduces structure like the Karman vortex street. However, as for the force coefficients, the qualitative properties are correctly predicted but some more improvements are needed for the quantitative accuracy.

  • The problem of a bluff body oscillating in a fluid flow has been receiving a great deal of attention. When a bluff body is placed in a flow, it experiences fluctuating hydraulic forces in both transverse and stream-wise directions. It is caused by the formation of vortices behind the body, which could cause large damages of structures. It is called the flow-induced vibrations. In this article, it is investigated the effects of that side-jets and rear-jet, which is applied to control the vortex shedding. The rear-jet is available to control the flow-induced vibrations according as the body shapes and the velocity of fluid flow in which the galloping phenomena is not appeared.
