  • Stress is a global menace exacerbated by the advancement of industrialization. Failure of stress management is to a breakdown of the psychological and physiological protection mechanisms against stress. The aim of present study was to investigate the anti-stress potential of ginseng against immobilization stress. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=24) were divided into three groups; (i) control, (ii) immobilization stress (2hr daily, for 2 weeks), and (iii) immobilization stress (2 hr daily, for 2 weeks) plus oral administration of ginseng (200 mg/kg BW Id). Immobilization stress resulted in a significant inhibition of body weight gain by 45 % and a significant decrease in the tissue weights of thymus and spleen (p < 0.05). The concentrations of blood GOT and GPT were significantly increased in the immobilization-stressed group compared to the control group (p < 0.05). There were no differences in the blood cholesterol levels among groups. Ginseng administration in the immobilization-stressed group tended to reverse the lack of body weight gain and food intake, though not significantly. The ginseng-administered group showed a significant reversal in the stress-induced effect on spleen and thymus weight, increasing the tissue weights by 16% and 20%, respectively, compared to immobilization-stressed group (p<0.05). The plasma corticosterone level was significantly increased in the stressed group by 39 % compared to the control group (p<0.05), but ginseng administration significantly reversed the stress-induced increase in plasma corticosterone by 15 % compared to the immobilization-stressed group. The present study suggests that the anti-stress effect of ginseng is mediated by normalization of stress-induced changes in the circulating hormones and a reversal of tissue weight loss, thereby returning the body to normal homeostasis.

  • Heavy metal ion immobilization properties of microporous ettringite (3Ca$O{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}3CaSO_4{\cdot}32H_2$) body were examined using standard solutions of typical heavy metals. Microporous Ettringite body with desirable shape for an ionic adsorbent was obtained by the self hardening of the paste prepared from the mixture of tricalcium aluminate($C_3$A) and gypsum(CaS$O_4{\cdot}2H_2$O). Crushed grains of ettringite were soaked in each standard solutions of Pb, Co, Cd, Mn and Cr concentrated at 200 ppm. In order to evaluate the ionexchange and immobilization ability, the ionic concentration of the filtrate solution as well as the solution obtained after leaching test was measured. As a result, for the heavy metal ions excepting Cr, porous ettringite body was revealed to be excellent in ionic exchange and immobilization properties though some ions eluted at the severe condition of pH 2. The adsorption and keeping capacity for four heavy metals showed the order of $Pb{>}Co{>}Cd{>}$Mn.

  • To investigate the effect of Qi promoting-agents, clearing heat of deficiency type-agent, clearing heat of excessive type-agent, warming interior part of body-agent and Shihoieokgan-Tang against the immobilization stress, Cypri Rhizama, Auranti pericarpium, Aucklandiae Radix and Bupleuri Radix, Soyo-San, Hwangyeonhaedok-Tang, Geongangbuja-Tang and Shihoieokgan-Tang was administered intragastically 1hr prior to immobilizaiton stress and the change of corticosterone level has been measured by the flurometric method. The results obtained are as follows: 1. Qi promoting-agents(Cypri Rhizama, Auranti pericarpium, Aucklandiae Radix and Bupleuri Radix) showed mildly reducing effect or did not shown the reducing effect against the elevated coritocostereone level induced by the immobilization stress in the mice. 2. Hwangyeonhaedok-Tang, Gungangbuza-Tang, and Soyo-San did not show the reducing effect against the elevated corticostereone level induced by the immobilization stress in the mice. 3. Shihoieokgan-San was effective against the elevated corticosterone level induced by the immobililzation stress at 1g/kg, 3g/kg respectively. Consequently these data proved that Qi pomoting-agents as single herb(Cypri Rhizama, Auranti pericarpium, Aucklandiae Radix and Bupleuri Radix), clearing heat of deficiency type-agent(Soyo-San), warming interior part of the body(Gungangbuza-Tang), clearing heat of excessive type-agent(Hwangyeonhaedok-Tang) have no effect to decrease the elevated corticosterone level in mice exposed to the immobilization stress. Therefore our study revealed that Shihoieokgan-San which has the effects of herbs and formulae mentioned above decreased the elevated corticosterone level in mice exposed to the immobilization stress significantly.

  • Ettringite$(3CaO{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}3CaSO_4{\cdot}32H_2O)$, one of the hydrated phase of Portland cement is usually formed in the early stage of hydration by the reaction of tricalciumaluminate$(C_3A)$ and gypsum. The rapid and strong crystal growth of separated rod-shaped ettringite have been utilized for the preparation of special cements of rapid setting, high strength and non-shrinking properties. The ettringite also has been noticed as a promising materials for the immobilization of various waste ions because of its unique crystal structure which has abundant channels and exchangeable ionic compounds. In this study, the formation and growth behavior of the ettringite was investigated in the system $C_3A-CaSO_4-H_2O$ using $C_3A$ clinker and gypsum to obtain a microporous body for waste ion immobilization. Ettringite was revealed to form by the dissolution-precipitation mechanism and the bulk body was by the entangled growth of rod-shaped ettringite crystals. The hardened body was composed of nearly pure rod-shaped ettringite interlocked each other with adequate mechanical strength. The homogeneity of structure, pore size, specific surface area and porosity of the hardened body were influenced by reaction temperature, water/powder ratio and the curing time. The hardened body prepared with water/powder ratio of 1 at $24^{\circ}C$ for one day showed excellent morphological properties for the purposed materials.

  • The demand for a better immobilization device has been increased in the radiation oncology field. Especially, it is essential to have a reliable and practical immobilization tool for the whole body radiosurgery and the IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy). A useful method to immobilize the abdomen for the external beam radiation treatment is developed. The air-injected balloon blanket (AIBB) was designed as an immobilization device. As the air was injected into it, it pressed down the patient's abdomen and fixed the patient. The AIBB played a role not only to grab the patients' motion, but also to increase the patients' setup reproducibility. Patients' movements due to the respiration were reduced and the reconstruction could be maximized. The experimental results revealed that the AIBB could be used for the clinic.

  • The effect of xylazine administration on plasma cortisol, prolactin, glucose and packed cell volume (PCV) responses to immobilization and heat stress was investigated. Immobilization of rats for 2 hours by ligation of the fore and hind legs strongly caused approximately two-fold increase in plasma cortisol and prolactin levels. Plasma glucose and PCV were not significantly changed. Pretreatment of immobilized rats with xylazine (20 mg/kg body weight i.m.) resulted in approximately 20% reduction in both plasma cortisol and prolactin concentrations. A marked hyperglycemia and increase in the PCV value was observed. On the other hand, rats exposed to acute heat stress ($40^{\circ}C$, and 60% relative humidity) for 2 hours, also developed two fold increase in both plasma cortisol and prolactin concentrations and the pretreatment with xylazine caused a 20% reduction in the levels of both hormones. Plasma glucose level was not significantly changed in heat stressed rats but it was markedly increased after pretreatment with xylazine. PCV was significantly incrcased under heat stress and pretreatment with xylazine induced a pronounced elevation in this value. It was suggested that stimulation of cortisol and prolactin secretion in response to immobilization or heat stress can be partially reduced by an alpha 2-adrenergic agonist.
