  • In order to evaluate the anti-tumor and synergic effect of BoJungIkKeeHapDaeChilKi-Tang on doxorubicin, the inhibitory concentration(IC), IC50 and IC90 of single use of doxorubicin and BoJungIkKeeHapDaeChilKi-Tang with their concomitant treatment against MKN-45(Human stomach carcinoma) was observed using MTT(Microculture Tetrazolium test) assay. In addition, their anti-tumor effects were also observed in the xenograft nude mice models agianst MKN-45 cell lines. BoJungIkKeeHapDaeChilKi-Tang has only mimic direct anti-tumor effect against to MKN-45 cell lines but they were decreased general depressed signs induced by implantation of tumor cell lines and increased the total WBC and lymphocyte numbers. So, it is considered or expected that BoJungIkKeeHapDaeChilKi-Tang extracts were reduced by the critical toxicity of doxorubicin and shows favorable synergic effect with doxorubicin and BoJungIkKeeHapDaeChilKi-Tang extracts.

  • Shin-Ki-Hwan (Shen-Qi-Wan, SKH), Bo-Jung-Ik-Ki-Tang (Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, BJIKT), and Sa-Mul-Tang (Si-Wu-Tang, SMT) have been used for various kinds of deficiency syndromes, such as 'yang', 'qi', and 'blood', respectively. The objects of this study were to determine the effects of water extracts of three different kinds of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), SKH, BJIKT, and SMT, on the anxiolytic activities in the elevated plus-maze test and to clarify the differences among 'yang', 'qi', and 'blood'. The water extracts of SKH, BJIKT, and SMT were orally administered to male SD rats, at 1.0 g/kg for 10 days. All rats were subjected to behavioral tests for the anxiolytic activity at 10 days. SKH, for the benefiting 'yang'agents, significantly increased the ratio of open arms entry to the total arms entry and time spent in the open arms (p<0.05), suggesting anxiolytic effect. However, both BJIKT and SMT decreased the ratio of open arms entry to the total arms entry and increased times spent in the closed arms (p<0.05). From these findings, it can be speculated that SKH only exhibits anxiolytic effect and that the different anxiolytic effects in the elevated plus-maze test may be come from the meanings of 'yang', 'qi', and 'blood'in oriental diagnostics though the cases are restricted.

  • Dyshidrotic eczema is a chronic vesicular skin disease due to stress, sweating and nickel dermatitis. It has the characteristic symptoms of a cluster of vesicles and frequent recurrence. We diagnosed a 63-year old male patient case with hyperkeratosis, itching and vesicles at his right foot as dyshidrotic eczema and treated him with application of herbal medicine(bo-jung-ik-ki-tang) and acupunture at Dong-su Oriental-medicine hospital in 2003. We had a good result, so we report this case.

  • To examine effects of oriental pharmaceutical preparations on immunity, four of such preparations which are currently being used were examined. After their fluid extracts were injected intraperitoneally to ICR mice, the counts of total cell number, PMN and macrophage in the peritoneal cavity were made by using non-specific esterase staining method, and plaque-forming cells (PFC) were measured by using the modified method of Cunningham and Jerne. The results showed that 'Bo-Jung-Ik-Ki-Tang', 'Ih-Jung-Tang', 'Ohn-Kyeong-Tang' and 'Ke-Ji-Bok-Ryeong-Hwan-Ka-Dae-Hwang' increased both the macrophages and the total cells of the peritoneal cavity and that these preparations increased the number of PFC in the spleen. Therefore the data indicate that they potentiate both of the cellmediated and humoral immunities in the mice.
