  • Karyotype analysis was carried out on blood samples of 30 water buffaloes belonging to different breed groups (i.e. Philippine Carabao (PC), Indian Murrah (IM), Bulgarian Murrah (BM), "$F_1$ 50% IM-50% PC", "$F_1$ 50% BM-50% PC" and "75% IM-25% PC"), using the modified Leucocyte Culture Technique. The modal chromosome numbers of the PC, "$F_1$ 50% IM-50% PC", "$F_1$ 50% BM-50% PC", IM, BM and "75% IM-25% PC" were 2n=48, 49, 49, 50, 50 and 50, respectively. The water buffalo chromosomes are mostly acrocentric (79.67%) and the remainder submetacentric (20.33%). Results of the ordinary least square analysis showed significant breed effects (p<0.01) on other karyotypic characteristics (i.e. relative length, arm ratio and centromeric index). Significant correlation between karyotypic characteristics and some animal performance traits were also found. The significant correlation values imply that karyotypic characteristics can be used as important criteria to select potentially productive young water buffaloes. In the future, more production and reproduction traits from non-institutional herds should be included in the analysis to reveal meaningful correlations with various karyotypic characteristics.

  • In this paper, we designed a RF transceiver for small unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) using power switching method. To apply for the UAV, several characteristics such as size, weight, and power consumption are very important. To reduce power consumption, we propose a new power switching method. Using the proposed method, we fabricated the RF transceiver needed to establish the data link for a small UAV. The fabricated RF transceiver shows an output power of +25 dBm, a noise figure of 4.56 dB and a received signal strength of -100 dBm. By performing power measurement of proposed switching method, 25 % of power could be reduced. The size of the fabricated RF transceiver is $100{\times}60{\times}5.7mm^3$ and the weight is as small as 38 g.

  • In this paper, a power amplifier module for WCDMA base-station applications is designed and implemented using GaN field-effect transistors (FETs), which uses an envelope tracking bias system. The designed module consists of an high gain MMIC amplifier, a driver amplifier, a power amplifier, and bias circuits for envelope tracking applications. Especially, a FET bias sequencing circuit and two isolators are integrated for stable RF operations. All circuits are assembled within a single housing, so its dimension is just $17.8{\times}9.8{\times}2.0\;cm3$. Measured results show that the developed power amplifier module has good envelope tracking capability: the power-added efficiency of 35% at the output power range from 30dBm to 40dBm over a wide range of drain bias.

  • The effects of feeding a mannan oligosaccharide (Bio-Mos) from 0 to 3 g/kg diet and vaccination program on 1- to 35-day performance (growth and feed efficiency), metabolizable energy, nitrogen utilization and carcass composition of meat chickens were investigated. A general vaccination program was used against IB, IBD and ND with half of the birds per diet receiving a booster dose of IB and ND vaccines at 12 days of age. Dietary supplementation of Bio-Mos (BM) did not influence body weight gain, feed efficiency and nutrient utilization. The highest dietary BM (3 versus 1.5 or 0 g/kg) increased carcass abdominal fat and reduced the proportion of drumstick in the carcass of meat chickens. The booster dose reduced the performance of birds. It was concluded that the addition of BM to the diet of chickens did not significantly influence the performance and nutrient utilization of meat chickens.

  • Coculture of HSC with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) is one of used methods to increase cell numbers before transplant to the patients. However, because of difficulties to purify HSCs after coculture with BM-MSCs, it needs to develop a method to overcome the problem. In the present study, we have examined whether a culture insert placed over a feeder layer might support the expansion of HSCs within the insert. $CD34^+/ $ cells isolated from the umbilical cord blood by using midiMACS were divided into three groups. A group of 1 $\times$ $10^5$ cells were grown on a culture insert without feeder layer (Direct). The same number of HSCs was directly cocultured with BM-MSCs (Contact). The third group was placed onto an insert below which BM-MSCs were grown (Insert). To distinguish feeder cells from HSCs, BM-MSCs was pre-labeled fluorescently with PKH26 and 1 $\times$ $10^5$ cells were seeded in the culture dishes. After culture for 13 days, the expansion factor (x) of HSCs that were grown without feeder layer (Direct) was $26.6 \pm 8.4.$ In contrast, the number of HSCs directly cocultured with feeder layer was 59.6 $\pm$ 0.5 and that of HSCs cultured onto an insert was $46.9 \pm 8.4.$ The percentage of BM-MSCs cells remained being fluorescent was $97.9 \pm 0.3%$ after culture. Immune-phenotypically large proportion of cultured cells were founded to be differentiated into myeloid/monocyte progenitor cells. The ability of BM-MSCs, fetal lung, cartilage and brain tissue cells to support ex vivo expansion of HSCs was also examined using the insert. After 11 days of coculture with each of these cells, the expansion factor of HSCs was 15.0, 39.0, 32.0 and 24.0, respectively. Based upon these observations, it is concluded that the coculture method using insert is very effective to support ex vivo expansion of HSCs and to eliminate the contamination of other cells used to coculture wth HSCs.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the possible utilization of 5 different animal protein sources in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Meat and bone meal (MBM), feather meal (FM), squid liver powder (SLP), poultry by-product(PBP) and blood meal (BM) were chosen to be the candidate for the possible ingredients for the dietary fish meal replacer in rainbow trout feed. Six different diets were formulated of isonitrogenous and isocaloric basis of $48\textperthousand$ crude protein and 16.7 kJ/g diet: diet 1, $100\textperthousand$ white fish meal (WFM); diet w, $80\textperthousand$ WFM +20% MBM; diet 3, 80% WFM +20% FM; diet 4, 80% WFM+20% SLP; diet 5, 80% SFM+20% PBP; diet 6, 80% WFM +20% BM. As the dietary protein sources, each diet containing 34.7% of animal protein were supplied by WFM with and without MBM, FM, SLP, PBP or BM and approximately 64.2% of plant protein. After one week of conditioning period, fish averaging 2g were divided into six groups and fed one of the experimental diets for 8 weeks. After eight weeks of feeding trials, there were no significant differences in weight gain and feed conversion ratio among groups of fish fed diet 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6(P>0.05). However, weight gain of fish fed diet 2 were significantly lower than those of fish fed diet 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6(P<0.05). These results indicated that FM, SLP, PBP and BM can be used as a dietary fish meal replacer up to 20% in juvenile rainbow trout.

  • A structure which transmits and receives 3 subscribers packet data through an optical splitter node in an optical subscriber network of PON wave suggested and realized. All the functions which are necessary to use PON structure such as 155.52Mb/s multiplexer/demultiplexer of down-stream signal, 25.92Mb/s multiplexer/demultiplexer of up-stream signal, frame synchronizer, and phase aligner for aligning phase of the clock and received data have been integrated within 2 ICs using CMOS technonology. TDMAtechnology was suggested for up-stream transmission. In the optical up-stream transmission of the urst signals transmissionquality degradataion by APC and AGC of optical tranceiver was observed. By compensating the degradation, more than 17dB of link budget which is enough to satisfy 11.2dBthat is required in SWAN of PON architecture has been obtained with optical transceiver whose power and sensitivity are -17dBm and -34dBm respectively.

  • In this paper, the analytic design technique for a planar PIN diode limiter is presented rather than the conventional design heavily relying on the experiments. The novel analysis fur the PIN diode limiter shows the leakage is composed of two kinds of leakages and the relationship between the leakages and the PIN diode parameters. The designed limiter consists of 3 stages; the front two stages with two PM diodes and the final stage with Schottky diode pair. The fabricated limiter shows the insertion loss of 0.8 dB for the small input power, spike leakage of 12 Bm, flat leakage of 12 dBm for the 20 W RF power.

  • A study was carried out to see the effects of phenol on the biological degradation of a wastewater containing 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol and the biodegradation kinetic coefficients of Eckenfelder's modified model for the activated sludge process. The system containing base mix (BM) which was formulated with essential energy sources and nutrients was run down and washed out when 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4-dinitrophenol was introduced into the base mix unit without acclimation to phenol. Whereas for the system acclimated to phenol, the treatment efficiency was 91.9% in terms of $BOD_5$ and treatability for each chemical of phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol was 99.8%, 43.3% and 62.5% based on concentration, respectively. Additional BM was added into the combined unit containing phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol so that the better treatment efficiency was achieved for each compound. The biokinetic coefficient of Eckenfelder's modified model without phenol acclimation was not estimated because the system did not reach the steady state. Thc coefficient for the phenol acclimation was 12.44 /day, however it was changed as 46.91 /day in addition of both of phenol acclimation and 47 mg/l of BM. The results presented above could be useful for the process design and further study in the field of biodegradation of benzene derivatives.

  • Sorption studies were conducted to determine if slow sorption fraction is observed in recent1y deposited organic matter by studying wetland soils explicitly. Sorption characteristics of hydrophobic organic compounds (chlorobenzene and phenanthrene) in recently deposited freshwater marsh soils were determined using a batch sorption procedure. Relative indicators of organic matter age were assessed using several techniques including the ratio of elemental oxygen to carbon in the organic matter. Slow sorption characteristics for both surface marsh soil (top 0-2 cm, <5 years old) and deeper marsh soil (below 10-cm, >20 years old) were compared against relatively older PPI (Petro Processors, Inc. Superfund site) and BM (Bayou Manchac) soils to investigate whether soil age can cause differences in sorption of organic compounds in wetland soils. Increases in sorption non-linearity of slow sorption model parameters (increase in KF and decrease in N) explain the existence of slow sorption fraction. The results of slow sorption model indicates the presence of a sizable slow sorption fraction; 25.4 - 26.3% (chlorobenzene) and 1.4 - 1.9% (phenanthrene) of the sorbed mass in wetland soils and 40.0 - 55.93% (chlorobenzene) and 2.9 - 3.19% (phenanthrene) of the sorbed mass in PPI and BM soils, respectively. The slow sorption fraction increased in the order of surface < deeper < PPI < BM soil indicating that size of the slow sorption fraction increases with soil organic matter age.
