Purpose: Reduced heart rate variability significantly increases cardiovascular mortality. Metabolic syndrome increases the cardiac autonomic dysfunction. Recently, increasing cardiovascular mortality has been reported in patients with schizophrenia. This study was done to compare heart rate variability between adults with and without schizophrenia and to compare the relationship of heart rate variability to metabolic syndrome in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia. Methods: This was a descriptive and correlational study in which 719 adults without schizophrenia and 308 adults with schizophrenia took part between May and June 2008. We measured the following: five-minute heart rate variability; high-frequency, low-frequency, the ratio of low-frequency to high-frequency, and the Standard Deviation of all the normal RR intervals. Data was also collected on metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, blood pressure and fasting glucose. Results: The Standard Deviation of all the normal RR intervals values of heart rate variability indices were $1.53{\pm}0.18$. The low-frequency and high-frequency values of heart rate variability indices were significantly higher in hospitalized patients with schizophrenia ($3.89{\pm}1.36$; $3.80{\pm}1.20$) than those in the healthy participants ($2.20{\pm}0.46$; $2.10{\pm}0.46$). There were no significant differences between the schizophrenic patients with and without metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that schizophrenia patients have significantly lower cardiac autonomic control, but they have significantly higher low-frequency and high-frequency values than those of healthy adults. Use of antipsychotic drug may affect the autonomic nervous system in schizophrenic patients. Metabolic syndrome was not associated with cardiac autonomic control in schizophrenia patients.
Numerous studies of short-term, beat-to-beat variability in cardiovascular signals have used linear analysis techniques. However, no study has been done about the appropriateness of linear techniques or the comparison between linearities and nonlinearities in short-term, beat-to-beat variability. This paper aims to verify the appropriateness of linear techniques by investigating nonlinearities in short-term, beat-to-beat variability. We compared linear autoregressive moving average(ARMA) with nonlinear neural network(NN) models for predicting current instantaneous heart rate(HR) and mean arterial blood pressure(BP) from past HRs and BPs. To evaluate these models. we used HR and BP time series from the MIMIC database. Experimental results indicate that NN-based nonlinearities do not play a significant role and suggest that 10 technique provides adequate characterization of the system dynamics responsible for generating short-term, beat-to-beat variability.
Objectives : To investigate the relationship of serum uric acid to cardiovascular risk factors in Korean male workers. Methods : We screened 522 male workers at an electrical manufacturing company by a periodic health examination and a questionnaire survey in 2000. We collected data relating to age, smoking status, alcohol drinking status, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, serum lipid, fasting blood glucose and serum uric acid. The data were analyzed using a variety of methods, including ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multivariate regression analyses. to examine the association between uric acid and cardiovascular risk factors with a cross-sectional study design. Results : The concentration of serum uric acid showed positive associations with BMI, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-cholesterol; it was also significantly correlated to systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Life-style characteristics, such as smoking and alcohol drinking showed no significant association. From the multivariate regression analyses, BMI, total cholesterol and fasting blood glucose levels were found to be independent positive predictors of uric acid; while age, blood pressure and smoking status give no independent contribution explaining the variability of serum uric acid levels. Conclusions : This study demonstrates that serum uric acid level have a significant association with cardiovascular risk factors, such as BMI, total cholesterol and blood glucose in some Korean male workers.
Purpose: A study was designed to compare heart rate variability (HVR) of older adults with postprandial hypotension (PPH) with older adults with no PPH. Methods: The samples were community-dwelling older adults (${\geq}$ 60 years old) with PPH (n=35) and without PPH (n=35). HRV was measured by 10 minutes of electrocardiography using Physiolab 400 and analyzed in time domain (SDNN) and with power spectral analysis in frequency domain (TP, LF, HF, LF/HF). Blood pressure was measured every 15 minutes before and until 120 minutes after the meal. Results: All HRV parameters were lower in the PPH group compared to those with no PPH. Specifically the measures of SDNN, TP, LF, and LF/HF of the PPH group were significantly lower (U=385.0, $p$=.008; U=361.0, $p$=.003; U=375.0, $p$=.005; U=368.0, $p$=.004, respectively). Further, the LF and LF/HF of SBP (${\geq}140$ mmHg) group and the LF/HF of DBP (${\geq}$ 90 mmHg) group were significantly lower ($x^2$=6.33, $p$=.042; $x^2$=33.10, $p$ <.001; $x^2$=11.03, $p$=.004, respectively). Conclusion: These findings indicate that the autonomic nervous functions in persons with PPH are less activated than those persons with no PPH. The findings contribute to an understanding of HRV and the association of autonomic nervous function with the mechanism of PPH.
The thesis presents a system that continuously collects the human body's physiological vital information at rest with sensors and ICT information technology and predicts diabetes using the collected information. it shows the artificial neural network machine learning method and essential basic variable values. The study method analyzed the correlation between heart rate measurements of BCG and ECG sensors in 20 DM- and 15 DM+ subjects. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) machine learning program was used to predictability of diabetes. The input variables are time domain information of HRV, heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate, stroke volume, minimum blood pressure, highest blood pressure, age, and sex. ANN machine learning prediction accuracy is 99.53%. Thesis needs continuous research such as diabetic prediction model by BMI information, predicting cardiac dysfunction, and sleep disorder analysis model using ANN machine learning.
The purpose of this study is to present an effective methodology that can measure heart rate, heart rate variability, oxygen saturation, respiration rate, mental stress level, and blood pressure using mobile front camera that can be accessed most in real life. Face recognition was performed in real-time using Blaze Face to acquire facial image data, and the forehead was designated as ROI (Region Of Interest) using feature points of the eyes, nose, and mouth, and ears. Representative values for each channel of the ROI were generated and aligned on the time axis to measure vital signs. The vital signs measurement method was based on Fourier transform, and noise was removed and filtered according to the desired vital signs to increase the accuracy of the measurement. To verify the results, vital signs measured using facial image data were compared with pulse oximeter contact sensor, and TI non-contact sensor. As a result of this work, the possibility of extracting a total of six vital signs (heart rate, heart rate variability, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, stress, and blood pressure) was confirmed through facial images.

This study aims to investigate the effects of aroma inhalation on pain, anxiety, and heart rate variability of elderly women with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) during continuous passive motion (CPM) exercise. Equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were randomized to intervention group (n=26) or control group (n=27). Participants inhaled aroma or distilled water for 5 minutes before CPM exercise and for 40 minutes during CPM exercise on 3 consecutive days. Pain NRS, number of painkiller used, anxiety NRS, blood pressure, and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured before and after intervention. Pain NRS, anxiety NRS, blood pressure in experimental group were significantly lower than those of control group. All indices of HRV were significantly different between the two groups. Based on these results, it can be concluded that aroma inhalation was effective in decreasing pain and anxiety and changing HRV among elderly women with TKA during CPM exercise.

According to the conventional studies on the noise and cardiovascular effect, railway noise is better associated with hypertension and adverse cardiovascular events than road traffic noise. But the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated the hypothesis that exposure to acute railway noise would the unfavorable effect of cardiovascular and autonomic system in healthy young subjects. Using a randomized, sham-controlled cross-over design, ten subjects were assigned to receive either an exposure to high speed train noise (84 dB) for 30 minutes or a control condition (non noise), separated by two days. Blood pressure, heart rate, augmentation index and heart rate variability as indices of cardiovascular and autonomic system function were measured at baseline, during, and recovery from two trials. The results show that exposure to acute railway noise significantly increased diastolic blood pressure and augmentation index, which may cause of adverse cardiovascular effects.
The aim of this study was to clarify the physiological and psychological effects of walking around and viewing a lake in a forest environment. The subjects included 11 male Japanese university students (age: $22.0{\pm}1.2$ years) who were randomly assigned to visit either a forest or an urban (control) setting. They were instructed to walk a predetermined 15-min course and to view the setting from a seated position for 15 min. Heart rate variability, heart rate, blood pressure, pulse rate, and salivary cortisol levels were measured to assess the subject's physiological responses to the environment. Four questionnaires (SD method, reports of "refreshed" feeling, POMS, and STAI) were administered to assess the subjects' psychological responses. It was found that walking around and viewing a lake in a forest environment can suppress sympathetic nerve activity, increase parasympathetic nerve activity, and decrease the heart rate, blood pressure, pulse rate, and cortisol levels. In addition, a forest environment can enhance the "comfortable," "soothing," "natural," and "refreshed" feelings, improve the mood state, and reduce anxiety. These results provide scientific evidence of the physiological and psychological effects of forest therapy.
Purpose The physiological and biochemical responses of healthy men and women to life stress were measured in order to investigate the correlation between these two responses under the normal situation. Materials and Methods The population of the research is some randomly chosen health college students located in Daejeon City during the period from August to September 2014, and the sample of 94 students. Heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure (BP) were selected as physiological stress indices and serum cortisol level was used as a biochemical stress biomaker. The data which is collected used SPSS19.0 programs and frequency and percentage and T-test, correlation. Results Male showed the significant higher value of serum cortisol level (p<0.05), BP (p<0.05), and LF/HF ratio of HRV (p<0.05) than female. The difference of BP between correlated significantly with serum cortisol level (p<0.05). The LF/HF ratio of HRV also correlated significantly with serum cortisol level (p<0.05) Conclusion We suggest that LF/HF ratio of HRV and BP may be good indices for the assessment of life stress.
