  • The main objective of the present study is to predict characteristics of three dimensional pulstitile flow by location of stenosis in blood vessel with the second order bifurcation. The present study simulates the incompressible non-Newtonian laminar blood flows using a Fluent V. 6.0. The Carreau model is employed as the constitutive equation for blood. The numerical simulation carried out at five cases without and with symmetry or asymmetry stenosis. It is found that the no stenosis and stenosis before first bifurcation do not have influence on flow at second bifurcated blood vessel. However, the stenosis after first biburcation has effect on flow at second bifurcated blood vessel.

  • Experimental and numerical studies for three-dimensional pulsatile flows are conducted to investigate the flow characteristics in the bifurcated tubes. Velocity measurements in experimental study were made by both Pulsed Doppler Ultrasound(PDU) machine and Laser Doppler Anemometer(LDA) system. Glycerin is used for experimental study. Experimental results are used to verify the results of the numerical simulation. Flow characteristics of Newtonian fluid and blood in the bifurcated tubes under the steady and pulsatlie flows are numerically investigated. Finite volume method is employed for three-dimensional numerical simulations. Blood is considered as a non-Newtonian fluid and the constitutive equation of blood is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical analyses are focused on the flow patterns for various branch angles ranging from 30.deg. to 90.deg. and diameter ratios such as 1.0, 0.8, and 0.6. Pulsatile flow characteristics of blood are compared with those of Newtonian fluid. Parameter effects on axial velocity, pressure and wall shear stress distribution along the bifurcated tubes are discussed in terms of the branch angle, diameter ratio, and Reynolds number.

  • Flow characteristics of blood flow in a micro channel were investigated experimentally using a micro-PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) velocity field measurement technique. The main objective of this study was to understand the real blood flow in micron-sized blood vessels. The Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter of micro-channel for deionized (DI) water was about Re=0.34. For each experimental condition, 100 instantaneous velocity fields were captured and ensemble-averaged to get the spatial distributions of mean velocity. In addition, the motion of RBC (Red Blood Cell) was visualized with a high-speed CCD camera. The captured flow images of nano-scale fluorescent tracer particles in DI water were clear and gave good velocity tracking-ability. However, there were substantial velocity variations in the central region of real blood flow in a micro-channel due to the presence of red blood cells.

  • A numerical analysis is performed to investigate the effect of rotation on the blood flow characteristics with four different angular velocities. The artery has a cylindrical shape with 50% stenosis rate symmetrically distributed at the middle. Blood flow is considered a non-Newtonian fluid. Using the Carreau model, we apply the pulsatile velocity profile at the inlet boundary. The period of the heart beat is one second. In comparison with no-rotation case, the flow recirculation zone (FRZ) contracts and its duration is reduced in axially rotating artery. Also wall shear stress is larger after the FRZ disappears. Although the geometry of artery is axisymmetry, the spiral wave and asymmetric flow occur clearly at the small rotation rate. It is caused that the flow is influenced by the effects of the rotation and the stenosis at same time.

  • In this study, the leaflet motion of a mechanical heart valve and the characteristics of two-dimensional transient blood flow in an elastic blood vessel have been numerically investigated by using fluid-structure interaction method. Here, blood has been assumed as a Newtonian, incompressible fluid. Pressure profiles have been used as boundary conditions at the ventricle and the aorta. As a result, closing motion of the leaflet is faster than opening one. While opening angles of leaflet grow up, vortex is detected at the sinus and backward of the leaflets. When the leaflet is fully closed, vortex is detected at the ventricle and at that moment maximum displacement of the elastic blood vessel is observed in the vicinity of the sinus region. Maximum displacement is caused in association with the blood flow that is oriented toward the elastic blood vessel.

  • The three dimensional, steady flows of blood and blood analogue fluids in the abdominal aortic bifurcation are simulated using the finite volume method. The objective of this investigation is to understand the generation and progression of site-specific atherosclerosis from a hydrodynamic point of view. Due to complexity of blood in conducting experimental study, aqueous polymer solutions are used as the substitutional fluids. For comparison purpose of the flow characteristics of blood and substitutional fluids, rheologically different fluids such as water soluble polymers of Carbopol-934 and Separan AP-273 are employed for the numerical simulation. In order to understand the role of hydrodynamics in the formation and development of atherosclerosis lesions flow velocities, pressures and shear stresses along the vessel are calculated for steady flows.

  • As the blood flow characteristics have been recognized to be closely related to various cardiovascular diseases, it is very important to predict them accurate enough in an efficient way. Thus, this paper proposes a one-dimensional spectral finite element model for the human blood vessels. The spectral finite element model is formulated in the frequency-domain by using the exact frequency dependent shape functions and applied to an ascending aorta.

  • Characteristics of the pulsatile flow in a 3-dimensional elastic blood vessel are investigated to understand the blood flow phenomena in the human body arteries. In this study, a model for the elastic blood vessel is proposed. The finite volume prediction is used to analyse the pulsatile flow in the elastic blood vessel. Variations of the pressure, velocity and wall shear stress of the pulsatile flow in the elastic blood vessel are obtained. The magnitudes of the velocity waveforms in the elastic blood vessel model are larger than those in the rigid blood vessel model. The wall shear stresses on the elastic vessel vary with the blood vessel motions. Amplitude indices of the wall shear stress for blood in the elastic blood vessel are $4\sim5$ times larger than those of the Newtonian fluid. As the phase angle increased, point of the phase angle is are moved forward and the wall shear stresses are increased for blood and the Newtonian fluid.

  • In this paper, the authors have implemented a blood flow simulator and a blood flowmeter probe using self-mixing effect of the laser diode. The purpose of the blood simulator is to simulate microvascular blood flow in tissue. It consists of melinex film (thickness = $125{\mu}m$) which has similar optical characteristics to epidermis and porous polyethylene filter (Vyon, porosity 35%, mean pore size $50{\mu}m$, thickness=1 mm) which has similar optical characteristics to dermis. The blood flowmeter probe consists of laser diode(5 mW, 780 nm wavelength), CD lens(focal lenght 12 mm), current-to-voltage converter, highpass filter, and preamplifier. It doesn't need optical fiber, therefore, implementation of the probe is simpler than conventional probe using optical fiber.
