Over-The-Top (OTT) Platforms' Strategies for Two-Sided Markets in Korea

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms' strategies for two-sided markets. For this, we examine six strategic factors influencing OTT's success in Korea. The analysis reveals, among six OTTs, Netflix utilizes five strategic factors except the same-side network effects. OTTs from pay TV operators and channel providers tend to block the cross-side network effects on the opponent OTTs, because they think their giveaway to content providers is in vein, if the invested content by them would be consumed on opponent rival platforms. Interesting is that after experiencing a negative association between the market entry of Netflix and the subscription revenue growth rate of pay TV services, pay TV operators utilize the same-side network effects by offering hybrid services in partnership with global OTTs like Netflix, Disney+ which are considered as a complementary OTT. In conclusion, it is suggested to target a new connected TV based OTT service offering with collaboration with Korean TV device manufacturers for Korean OTTs' global strategy, because Netflix-like global market expansion is not easy for them to cover their content cost.

Improved Hybrid MIMO Scheme for Next Generation Communication System (차세대 통신 시스템을 위한 향상된 하이브리드 MIMO 기법)

  • In this paper, a terrestrial transmission system is proposed for the next generation digital television (DTV) system by applying a hybrid multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technology based on linear dispersion codes (LDCs). The digital video broadcasting-2nd generation terrestrial (DVB-T2) system adopted a space time block code (STBC) for improving receive performance. However, the data rate of STBC is not increased in proportion to the transmitter. The hybrid STBC scheme utilizes several STBC transmission blocks for increasing data rate. It is possible to increase the data rate and performance in the receiver by utilizing LDC. The performances of the proposed and conventional hybrid STBC schemes are evaluated through computer simulations.

A Study on Steganography Using Cartoon Image (카툰 화상을 이용한 심층암호에 관한 연구)

  • Steganography is a kind of data hiding which can hide secret information to digital media. It is performed so that another person does not recognize any information and make secret communication between each other. Specially, it is not easy to hide secret information without being visually recognized in scanned text image or cartoon image etc. In this paper, we propose an improved method that can embed a large quantity of secret information in a binary image without noticeable artifacts. Binary cartoon image is divided into block of 3-by-3 sizes. Secret information is embedded by using run-length of 8-neighborhood pixels except for the center pixel of the block. To improve the embedding capacity, we embed it into center pixel under to some condition.

Adaptive In-loop Filter Method for High-efficiency Video Coding (고효율 비디오 부호화를 위한 적응적 인-루프 필터 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive in-loop filter to improve the coding efficiency. Recently, there are post-filter hint SEI and block-based adaptive filter control (BAFC) methods based on the Wiener filter which can minimize the mean square error between the input image and the decoded image in video coding standards. However, since the post-filter hint SEI is applied only to the output image, it cannot reduce the prediction errors of the subsequent frames. Because BAFC is also conducted with a deblocking filter, independently, it has a problem of high computational complexity on the encoder and decoder sides. In this paper, we propose the low-complexity adaptive in-loop filter (LCALF) which has lower computational complexity by using H.264/AVC deblocking filter, adaptively, as well as shows better performance than the conventional method. In the experimental results, the computational complexity of the proposed method is reduced about 22% than the conventional method. Furthermore, the coding efficiency of the proposed method is about 1% better than the BAFC.

  • With the rapid development of RF based high speed wireless communication technology, devices that can be applied to IoT networks based on RF bandwidth are rapidly spreading, nevertheless, the development speed of the RF communication is not possible to keep up with the spread of the RF band for wireless communication. In this situation, OWC technology that uses visible light source as a transmitter is attracting attention as a technology that can overcome the band exhaustion problem of RF based wireless communication technology. Although, due to the distortion of the LED illumination shape by camera exposure time and LED blinking period, the LED illumination detection rate is degraded and the RoI setting is inaccurate. In this paper, we propose an adaptive median filter applied LED illumination detection algorithm for low rate CamCom, it is possible to detect a clear RoI and LED illumination. This research will be able to play a role as a complementary material of RF based wireless communication technology efficiently.

  • Respond time and processing rate representing how many tasks can be done during an unit time in a client/server environment are generally use for measuring the performance of computers. In this paper, we suggest a window buffer managing scheme based on a window with many of short-term sliced slots where a media stream is allocated and deallocated into them so that it can maximize the utilization ration of the limited buffer on a multimedia server. And we also propose a buffer substitution scheme for reducing I/O times of a multimedia server by counting re-reference time point about a used block and then it can be reused by the next consecutive media stream.

  • Oligomers of p-phenylene vinylene and its derivatives have drawn much attention due to their unusual emission characteristics of showing increased emission when they form into nanoparticles. We have investigated the optical properties of the oligo-(p-phenylene vinylene) and its cyano-substituted derivatives in solution and in nanoaggregate media by femtosecond and picosecond time resolved fluorescence as well as stationary spectroscopies. All the spectroscopic data are consistent with the conclusion that the cyano substitution on the ${\beta}$-position of oligo-(p-phenylene vinylene) leads to breakage of the otherwise planar structure of cyano-unsubstituted molecules, which opens up an extremely efficient, as fast as 100 fs, non-radiative relaxation channel of the excited state. Formation of the nanoaggregates reverts the effect to make the molecules planar and to block the non-radiative relaxation channel. Therefore, concerning the applications in organic electroluminescent devices and organic light emitting diodes, substitution by the cyano group is not advantageous, although such modification should be useful in respect of controlling fluorescence intensity in different media.

  • Several costs including printing and management are added in commerce by vouchers. In this case that a voucher is digitalized and flown through mobile phones, these costs are diminished considerably. Also, as mobile commerce is on the increase according to the activation of smart phones, NFC technology with near distance communication is gave attention to. Therefore, researches for using NFC-based electronic vouchers to pay electronically on mobile are made. To analyze the flow path of electronic vouchers, which helps marketing strategy, this paper proposes the method to put useful data into them. The proposed method utilizes object memory model. The proposed electronic voucher includes the block for flow history data in addition to its information. In the future, we will implement and test this electronic voucher.

  • In this study, we compared the perception of absolute purchase of equipment for broadcasting equipment purchasing demand according to the rapid change of domestic content production and distribution method, and the degree of information such as technical reliability and system stability of domestic broadcasting equipment perceived by consumer The effects were analyzed through a research model. Due to the lack of existing research data on broadcasting equipment demand, we conducted in depth interviews with surveys of broadcasting equipment and surveys. As a result of analysis, compared to foreign equipments, there are many cases of purchase of domestic equipments, systems, and block purchases. To improve the preference and satisfaction of Korean broadcasting equipment, which is recognized by domestic demand for broadcasting equipment, it is urgent to improve the technical reliability and to develop core key equipment and to expand the demand of domestic equipment limited to small power transmitter antenna and monitor equipment. It is urgent to develop in order to develop overseas and to support the domestic market to secure the domestic market.

FlashEDF: An EDF-style Scheduling Scheme for Serving Real-time I/O Requests in Flash Storage

  • In this paper, we propose a scheduling scheme that can efficiently serve I/O requests having deadlines in flash storage. The I/O requests with deadlines, namely, real-time requests, are assumed to be issued for streaming services of continuous media. Since a Web-based streaming server commonly supports downloads of HTMLs or images, we also aim to quickly process non-real-time I/O requests, together with real-time ones. For this purpose, we adopt the well-known rate-reservation EDF (RR-EDF) algorithm for determining scheduling priorities among mixed I/O requests. In fact, for the use of an EDF-style algorithm, overhead of task's switching should be low and predictable, as with its application of CPU scheduling. In other words, the EDF algorithm is inherently unsuitable for scheduling I/O requests in HDD storage because of highly varying latency times of HDD. Unlike HDD, time for reading a block in flash storage is almost uniform with respect to its physical location. This is because flash storage has no mechanical component, differently from HDD. By capitalizing on this uniform block read time, we compute bandwidth utilization rates of real-time requests from streams. Then, the RR-EDF algorithm is applied for determining how much storage bandwidth can be assigned to non-real-time requests, while meeting deadlines of real-time requests. From this, we can improve the service times of non-real-time requests, which are issued for downloads of static files. Because the proposed scheme can expand flexibly the scheduling periods of streams, it can provide a full usage of slack times, thereby improving the overall throughput of flash storage significantly.
