Effects of dietary probiotic, liquid feed and nutritional concentration on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility and fecal score of weaning piglets

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary probiotic blend and liquid feed program at different nutritional densities on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal score of weaning piglets. Methods: A total of 120 weaning pigs with an initial body weight of 7.05±0.93 kg per pig (21 days of age) were randomly allocated into 1 of the following 8 dietary treatments (3 replicates per treatment with 5 pigs per replicate) in a 2×2×2 factorial arrangement (nutrition levels: apparent metabolic energy [AME] = 3,500 kcal/kg, crude protein [CP] = 20% vs AME = 3,400 kcal/kg, CP = 19.42%; feed types:dry vs wet; probiotics levels: 0 mg/kg vs 300 mg/kg). Results: During d 5 to d 15, greater average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) (p<0.05) were observed in probiotics treatments. During d 15 to d 25, gain:feed (G:F) ratio (p<0.05) were significantly improved in probiotics, wet feed and high nutrition diet. Moreover, two interactions i) between nutrition levels and feed types, and ii) between nutrition levels and probiotics were found in G:F ratio. Furthermore, there was a significant positive interaction on G:F among those 3 factors (p<0.05). Overall, increasing ADG, ADFI, and G:F ratio were detected in probiotics treatment significantly (p<0.05). Besides, an obvious reduction on fecal score was observed in probiotics treatment from d 0 to d 5 (p<0.05). There was an interactive effect on fecal score between feed types and nutrition concentrations from d 5 to d 25 (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results indicated that probiotics supplementation could benefit growth performance and reduce the frequency of watery feces. Besides, wet feed program (feed:water = 1:1.25) could improve the G:F. The effect of liquid feed or probiotic could be influenced by dietary nutrition density in weaned piglets. An increased value of G:F was obtained when wet feeding a high nutrition diet (100 kcal higher than NRC 2012 recommendations) was supplemented with probiotics for 15 to 25 days.

  • The physico-mechanical properties of NR/BR blend were measured, and the results were interpreted in terms of the crosslink density with cure system. The cure rate, maximum torque and crosslink density increase with the content and ratio of curative for cure system. Hardness, 300 % tensile modulus, rebound and wear resistance increase with crosslink density of the vulcanizate but heat build-up and tan $\delta$ at $60^{\circ}C$ decrease. It is expected that semi-EV(efficient vulcanization) cure system is appropriate for application in tire tread of truck/bus in which load bearing property is impotant.

Gas and Lipid Permeabilities and Biodegradability of Poly(3-Hydroxybutyric Acid)/Chitosan Blend Film (Poly(3-Hydroxybutyric Acid)와 Chitosan 블렌드 필름의 기체 투과도, 유지 투과도 및 생분해도)

  • The blend films of poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) with chitosan were prepared and water vapor transmission rate, oxygen permeability and lipid permeability of the PHB/chitosan films were measured. Additionally, the biodegradability of the PHB/chitosan films was also evaluated. Water vapor transmission rate and oxygen permeability of the films decreased by the addition of chitosan. The addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG, plasticizer), however, increased the water vapor transmission rate and oxygen permeability of the films. In the evaluation of lipid permeability, all the films except PHB (the film made of only PHB) and PHB-P (the film made of PHB and PEG) did not permeate beef tallow for 24 hours. The consumed oxygen for PHB/chitosan films during incubation was greater than that for the control on the biodegradability determination of the films, which implies that PHB/chitosan films were degraded by the microorganisms. The higher PHB ratio of the films was, the faster biodegradation of the films occurred.

Polarized Light Emission of Liquid Crystalline Polymer Blends (액정성 고분자 블렌드의 편발광)

  • Fluorene-based light emitting polymer blends with liquid crystalline characteristics were studied on effective energy transfer and dichroic characteristics. Incorporating 0.5 wt% of the non-liquid crystalline into the liquid crystalline polymer suppressed the PL emission at 420 nm on photoexcitation at 360 nm, but generated a new PL emission of the non-liquid crystalline polymer at 480 nm. The highest PL intensity at 480 nm, which was 13 times stronger than those of the two polymers before blending, was observed for a blend with 2.0 wt% of the non-liquid crystalline polymer. When the molecules of the blends were aligned on a rubbed polyimide surface by a heating-cooling process, the dichroic ratio and the order parameter were 2.0 and 0.25, respectively. Time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) study revealed that the time required for energy transfer between the two chromophores was shortened by 93 ps when the blends were aligned on the rubbed polyimide surface by the heating-cooling process. The thermal treatment also enhanced the energy transfer efficiency by 9%.

  • The rheological properties of slag cement pastes by effect of particle size distribution of binder were investigated using a Rheostress 1 rheometer (Haake) with a cylindrical spindle and the relationship between fluidity particle size distribution using the Rosin-Rammler equation. Samples are combined the two types of slag powder and OPC, fine slag particles sized Elaine specific surface area $8,000cm^2/g$, coarse slag particles sized Elaine specific surface area $2,000cm^2/g$, intermediate OPC particles $3,450cm^2/g$, used to search for the combination that would yield the best quality product. The all flow curves which were measured by rheometer showed hysterisis and could be classified into 4 types. When the combination was based on a ratio of 15-20 vol% fine particles, 40-50 vol% intermediate particles, 30-40 vol% coarse particles of the total volume, a high fluidity and low yield-strength was achieved. The Rosin-Rammler function can explain aboved correlation flow curve types. On type 1, the n-value had a correlation with plastic viscosity however the blend of type 2 and 3 showed consistent n-value regardless of plastic viscosity. In addition, the blend in type 4 tended to a rise in fluidity according to the increase of the n-value.

Effects of Resveratrol and Essential Oils on Growth Performance, Immunity, Digestibility and Fecal Microbial Shedding in Challenged Piglets

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of resveratrol and essential oils from medicinal plants on the growth performance, immunity, digestibility, and fecal microbial shedding of weaned piglets. A total of 48 weaned piglets (8 kg initial weight, 28-d-old) were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments with 3 replications of 4 piglets each. The dietary treatments were NC (negative control; basal diet), PC (positive control; basal diet+0.002% apramycin), T1 (basal diet+0.2% resveratrol), and T2 (basal diet+0.0125% essential oil blend). All piglets were orally challenged with 5 ml culture fluid containing $2.3{\times}10^8$ cfu/ml of Escherichia coli KCTC 2571 and $5.9{\times}10^8$ cfu/ml Salmonella enterica serover Typhimurium. The PC group (p<0.05) showed the highest average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) throughout the experimental period, although feed conversion ratio (FCR) was improved in the T1 group (p>0.05). Serum IgG level was increased in the T1 group, whereas TNF-${\alpha}$ levels was reduced in the supplemented groups compared to control (p<0.05). The PC diet improved the dry matter (DM) digestibility, whereas PC and T2 diets improved nitrogen (N) digestibility compared to NC and T1 diets (p<0.05). Fecal Salmonella and E. coli counts were reduced in all treatment groups compared to control (p<0.05). Fecal Lactobacillus spp. count was increased in the T2 group compared to others (p<0.05). Dietary treatments had no significant effect on fecal Bacillus spp. count throughout the entire experimental period. Based on these results, resveratrol showed strong potential as antibiotic alternatives for reversing the adverse effects of weaning stress on growth performance, immunity and microbial environment in E. coli and Salmonella-challenged piglets.

  • Nutritional evaluation of the proposed supplementary foods (high nutrition-low cost foods) for children were conducted for the ‘Wonseong County Comprehensive Nutrition Program’ in Korea. Proximate composition, mineral, vitamin and amino acid composition were determined and also protein efficiency ratio(PER) was evaluated for the propsed formulas which were recommended as CSS (corn-soybean-sesame blend)-3, CSS-4 and BSS (barley-soybean-sesame blend)-4 in previous study. Protein and caloric contents of the formulas were around 18% and 400 Kcal/100 g respectively, and they have reasonable contents of mineral and vitamin. Amino acid score (83-89) and PER (2.33-2.36) of the proposed formulas were considered to be in adequate range of protein quality for feeding the target group in Wonseong County area.

  • In this study, mixed catalytic char gasification of Indonesia low-rank coal Kideco was investigated under nitrogen atmosphere and isothermal conditions at a fixed reactor. The effects of the temperature were investigated at various temperature (700, 750, 800, $850^{\circ}C$). The effects of blend ratio of catalysts ($K_2CO_3$, Ni) were investigated with different blend ratios (1:9, 3:7, 5:5, 7:3 and 9:1). The sample was prepared by mixing with $K_2CO_3$ physically and by ionexchange method with Ni. The data from thermogravimetric analyzer and gas chromatography were applied to four gassolid reaction kinetic models including shrinking core model, volumetric reaction model, random pore model and modified volumetric reaction model.

Basic Experimental Study on the Application of Biofuel to a Diesel Engine (바이오연료의 엔진 적용을 위한 실험적 기초연구)

  • Compared with the spark-ignition gasoline engine, the compression-ignition diesel engine has reduced fuel consumption due to its higher thermal efficiency. In addition, this reduction in the fuel consumption also leads to a reduction in $CO_2$ emission. Diesel engines do not require spark-ignition systems, which makes them less technically complex. Thus, diesel engines are very suitable target engines for using biofuels with high cetane numbers. In this study, the spray characteristics of biofuels such as vegetable jatropha oil and soybean oil were analyzed and compared with those of diesel oil. The injection pressures and blend ratios of jatropha oil and diesel oil (BD3, BD5, and BD20) were used as the main parameters. The injection pressures were set to 500, 1000, 1500, and 1600 bar. The injection duration was set to $500{\mu}s$. Consequently, it was found that there is no significant difference in the characteristics of the spray behavior (spray angle) in response to changes in the blend ratio of the biodiesel or changes in the injection pressure. However, at higher injection pressures, the spray angle decreased slightly.

Manufacture and Properties of PMMA Grafted Starch/Carbon Black/NBR Composites (PMMA 그래프트 전분/카본블랙/NBR 복합체의 제조와 물성)

  • Starch was grafted by poly(methyl methacrylate) through the emulsion polymerization method. Modified starch/(acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber) (NBR) compounds were prepared by a latex blend method. The morphology, thermal properties and mechanical properties of the modified starch/carbon black/NBR composites were investigated with the change of starch concentration. The mechanical properties of the composites were improved by the addition of modified starch. But, when the concentration of modified starch was higher than 40 phr, the mechanical properties were deteriorated due to the poor dispersion of modified starch. At the same ratio of starch to carbon black, the composite showed a synergistic reinforcing effect by the good dispersion and high cross-linking density. In addition, the tensile strength, storage modulus, hardness, swelling and other properties were the best.
