  • It is known that chloride ion in concrete destroys the passive film of reinforcement inside concrete and accelerates corrosion which is the most influencing factor to durability of concrete structures. In this thesis, a chloride ion diffusion model for blast furnace slag(BFS) concrete, which has better resistance to both damage due to salt and chloride ion penetration than ordinary portland cement concrete, is proposed by modifying existing model of normal concrete. Proposed model is verified by comparing diffusion analysis results with both results by indoor chloride penetration test for specimens and field test results for actual RC bridge pier. Also, the optimum resistance condition to chloride penetration is obtained according to degrees of fineness and replacement ratios of BFS concrete. As a result, resistance to chloride ion penetration for BFS concrete is more affected by replacement ratio than degree of fineness.

  • Temporal and spatial distribution of Korean rice blast fungus (Pyricularia grisea) race KI-409 that has been rapidely increased since 1993 and became predominant in 1995 in Korea were investigated. Varietal resistance of current commercial cultivars of rice to the race was also tested in this study. The race KI-409 was first isolated from rice cv. Namyangbyeo in 1985. Since 1985 the race had been isolated mainly from the rice cultivars having BL1 BL7 pedigree as a resistance source. Distribution ratio of the race in 1995 was 23.7% in average and became a predominant in the P. grisea population in Korea. The race distributed widely and found in all the eight provinces in Korea. Many commercial cultivars such as Chucheongbyeo as well as those with BL1 or BL7 as a genetic background were found to be susceptible to the race KI-409.

  • This paper investigated the effect of W/C and the kinds of cement on the chloride invasion resistance of the offshore concrete. W/C set up 0.30, 0.35, 0.40 and The kinds of cement were used four(ordinary portland cement, ground granulated blast-furnace slag cement, belite cement, low heat portland cement). For the electrical migration test, NT BUILD 492's method was used to estimate the migration coefficient of chloride ion. As a result, the migration coefficients of chloride ion of concrete according to w/c were shown reducing with the w/c increasing, and according to kinds of cement were shown discrepancy in chloride invasion resistance. Especially blast-furnace slag cement was most low it. In the each cement, the compressive strength was shown related to the migration coefficient.

  • This study was investigated to know the possible linkage relationship between blast resistance gene and plant height gene in rice. Two resistant varieties, Tadukan and Tetep were crossed with six susceptible semi-dwarf tester lines. Progenies derived from the crosses were inoculated with spray method at 3-4 leaf stage with blast races, C-8$^{+t}$ and T-2$^{+t}$. The results indicated that: (1) Resistance of Tadukan and Tetep to the C-8$^{+t}$ was controlled by a single dominant gene, respectively. (2) Resistance of Tadukan and Tetep to the T-2$^{+t}$ was expressed by complementary gene action between two dominant genes, respectively. (3) No linkage relationship was found between resistance gene and plant height gene of both Tadukan and Tetep when tested with C-8$^{+t}$ and T-2$^{+t}$, respectively.espectively.

  • The outer tank of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank is a longitudinally and meridianally pre-stressed concrete (PSC) wall structure. Because of the current trend of constructing larger LNG storage tanks, the pre-stressing forces required to increase wall strength must be significantly increased. Because of the increase in tank sizes and pre-stressing forces, an extreme loading scenario such as a bomb blast or an airplane crash needs to be investigated. Therefore, in this study, the blast resistance performance of LNG storage tanks was analyzed by conducting a blast simulation to investigate the safety of larger LNG storage tanks. Test data validation for a blast simulation of reinforced concrete panels was performed using a specific FEM code, LS-DYNA, prior to a full-scale blast simulation of the outer tank of a 270,000-kL LNG storage tank. Another objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and serviceability of an LNG storage tank with respect to varying amounts of explosive charge. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the design and safety evaluation of PSC LNG storage tanks.

  • There are many methods to improve the performance of concrete. Especially, granuated blast furnace slag. by-products used in concrete as the replacement material of cement, could contribute to improve the fluidity, resistance of chemical attack and strength of concrete. Also, it could contribute to decrease the rate of generating hydration heat, in addition to cost-down of concrete and prevention of enviromental pollution. Therefore, in order to establish the systemical application of granuated blast furnace slag in normal concrete, the engineering properties of concrete, such as fluidity, strength, setting and hydration properties etc.. was evaluated. In this study, replacement ratio of granuated blast furnace slag was 0, 30, 50, 70(%), and target slump was 8, 12, 15, 18(cm). Results from the experiment, granuated blast furnace slag showed the outstanding effects of improving the engineering properties of concrete. From now on, positive application of granuated blast furnace slag is expected in the point of improving the performance and cost-down of concrete.

  • As a first step towards identifying genes involving in the signal transduction pathways mediating rice blast resistance, we isolated 3 mutants lines that showed enhanced susceptibility to rice blast KJ105 (91-033) from a T-DNA insertion library of the japonica rice cultivar, Hwayeong. Since none of the susceptible phenotypes co-segregated with the T-DNA insertion we adapted a map-based cloning strategy to isolate the gene(s) responsible for the enhanced susceptibility of the Hwayeong mutants. A genetic mapping population was produced by crossing the resistant wild type Hwayeong with the susceptible cultivar, Nagdong. Chi-square analysis of the $F_2$ segregating population indicated that resistance in Hwayeong was controlled by a single major gene that we tentatively named Pi-hy. Randomly selected susceptible plants in the $F_2$ population were used to build an initial map of Pi-hy. The SSLP marker RM2265 on chromosome 2 was closely linked to resistance. High resolution mapping using 105 $F_2$ plants revealed that the resistance gene was tightly linked, or identical, to Pib, a resistance gene with a nucleotide binding sequence and leucine-rich repeats (NB-LRR) previously isolated. Sequence analysis of the Pib locus amplified from three susceptible mutants revealed lesions within this gene, demonstrating that the Pi-hy gene is Pib. The Pib mutations in 1D-22-10-13, 1D-54-16-8, and 1C-143-16-1 were, respectively, a missense mutation in the conserved NB domain 3, a nonsense mutation in the 5th LRR, and a nonsense mutation in the C terminus following the LRRs that causes a small deletion of the C terminus. These findings provide evidence that NB domain 3 and the C terminus are required for full activity of the plant R gene. They also suggest that alterations of the resistance gene can cause major differences in pathogen specificity by affecting interactions with an avirulence factor.

  • Rice blast is one of the serious devastating diseases. This study was carried out to determine the genetic diversities of blast resistance (R) genes form 86 accessions of aromatic rice with eight SNP markers, z4792, zt4792, z60510, zt6057, k6415, k6411, k39575 and t256, which showed the close-set linkage to 6 major genes, Piz, Piz-t, Pik, Pik-m, Pik-p, and Pit. Four accessions of indica type, Mayataung, Yekywin Yinkya Hmwe, Basmati9-93, and Basmati5854, showed the positive amplicons of six major genes. Among 86 accessions, 83 accessions were detected both or one of Piz and Piz-t genes. Seventy three accessions contained the Piz gene with z4792 marker. In addition, 30 and 71 accessions possessed Piz-t gene with zt4792 and zt6057 markers, respectively. Ten accessions showed the positive bands for the Piz-t gene with both zt4792 and zt6057 markers. Only one accession, Khau Nua Keo, was not amplified for both Piz and Piz-t gene. But japonica type, Gerdeh, possessed only Piz gene between Piz and Piz-t. Fifty two accessions showed the three of Pik multiple genes and Pit gene. Four accessions, Iari7447, Daebunhyangdo2, Shiyayuuine, and Basmati 6129 possessed a Pik-p gene. Especially, Pit gene on chromosome 1 was detected with t256 marker in all of 83 accessions, exception of A-2, one accession of japonica type.

  • Rice bacterial blight and blast are devastating rice diseases in worldwide. Riboflavin, vitamin B2, is an essential nutrient for human health, and is known to be as a growth regulator and as a plant defense activator against pathogens in plants. In this study, we investigated possibility of increasing internal vitamin B contents and inducing resistances against rice diseases by external foliar application of a riboflavin-based formulator called BioDoctor. In planta bioassay indicated that pretreatment of the foliar application of 1,000-fold or 500-fold diluted BioDoctor significantly induced disease resistance against rice blast and bacterial blight. In addition, about four fold higher levels of riboflavin contents were detected in the BioDoctor treated rice grain and stem compared to those of untreated rice. Our results indicated that foliar application of the riboflavin has a great potential to control plant diseases and to enhance internal vitamin contents in rice.

  • This study evaluated the effects of fibers on the void ratio, compressive strength and repeated freezing and thawing resistance of porous vegetation concrete with binder type (non-sintering inorganic binder and blast furnace slag cement) and natural jute fiber volume fraction (0.0 %, 0.1 % and 0.2 %). The natural jute fiber volume fraction affected the void ratio, compressive strength and repeated freezing and thawing resistance. Added of natural jute fiber resulted in improved properties of the void ratio, compressive strength and freezing and thawing resistance. Also, the both compressive strength and freezing and thawing resistance increased with natural jute fiber volume fraction up to 0.1 % and then decreased with fiber volume fraction at 0.2 %.
