LES(Large Eddy Simulation) with a cavitation model was performed to calculate an unsteady flow for a mixed flow pump with a closed type impeller. First, the comparison between the numerical and experimental results was done to evaluate a computational accuracy. Second, the torque acting on the blade was calculated by simulation to investigate how the cavitation caused the fluctuation of torque. The absolute pressure around the leading edge on the suction side of blade surface had positive impulsive peaks in both the numerical and experimental results. The simulation showed that those peaks were caused by the cavitaion which contracted and vanished around the leading edge. The absolute pressure was predicted by simulation with -10% error. The absolute pressure around the trailing edge on the suction side of blade surface had no impulsive peaks in both the numerical and experimental results, because the absolute pressure was 100 times higher than the saturated vapor pressure. The simulation results showed that the cavitation was generated around the throat, then contracted and finally vanished. The simulated pump had five throats and cavitation behaviors such as contraction and vanishing around five throats were different from each other. For instance, the cavitations around those five throats were not vanished at the same time. When the cavitation was contracted and finally vanished, the absolute pressure on the blade surface was increased. When the cavitation was contracted around the throat located on the pressure side of blade surface, the pressure became high on the pressure side of blade surface. It caused the 1.4 times higher impulsive peak in the torque than the averaged value. On the other hand, when the cavitation was contracted around the throat located on the suction side of blade surface, the pressure became high on the suction side of blade surface. It caused the 0.4 times lower impulsive peak in the torque than the averaged value. The cavitation around the throat caused the large fluctuation in torque acting on the blade.

In this study, aeroelastic response analyses have been conducted for a 3D wind turbine blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade. Vibration analyses of rotating wind-turbine blade have been conducted using the general nonlinear finite element program, SAMCEF (Ver.6.3). Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)equations with spalart-allmaras turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous Mach contour on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating wind-turbine blade model.

An experimental analysis using three-dimensional laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) measurement and computational analysis using the Reynolds stress model in FLUENT are conducted to give a clear understanding of the effect of blade loading on the structure of tip leakage flow in a forward-swept axial-flow fan operating at the maximum efficiency condition ($\Phi$=0.25) and two off-design conditions ($\Phi$=0.21 and 0.30). As the blade loading increases, the onset position of the rolling-up of tip leakage flow moves upstream and the trajectory of tip leakage vortex center is more inclined toward the circumferential direction. Because the casing boundary layer becomes thicker and the mixing between the through-flow and the leakage jet with the different flow direction is enforced, the streamwise vorticity decays more fast with the blade loading increasing. A distinct tip leakage vortex is observed downstream of the blade trailing edge at $\Phi$=0.30, but it is not observed at $\Phi$=0.21 and 0.25.

Experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade to investigate local heat transfer characteristics on the tip and shroud and the effect of inlet Reynolds number on the tip and shroud heat transfer. Detailed mass transfer coefficients on the blade tip and the shroud were obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The turbine test section has a single stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has flat tip geometry and the mean tip clearance is about $2.5{\%}$of the blade chord. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is changed from $1.0{\times}10^{5}\;to\;2.3{\times}10^{5}.$ to investigate the effect of Reynolds number. Flow reattachment after the recirculation near the pressure side edge dominates the heat transfer on the tip surface. Shroud surface has very intricate heat/mass transfer distributions due to complex flow patterns such as acceleration, relaminarization, transition to turbulent flow and tip leakage vortex. Heat/mass transfer coefficient on the blade tip is about 1.7 times as high as that on the shroud or blade surface. Overall averaged heat/mass transfer coefficients on the tip and shroud are proportional to $Re_{c}^{0.65}\;and\;Re_{c}^{0.71},$ respectively.

Last blades of LP turbine in nuclear power plant are the highly damaged part and suffered from nozzle steam impulses during the turbine operation. Nozzle impulse is known as a common cause of damage or failure in the turbine blade and results from steam flow distortions due to uneven steam flow patterns between the stationary blade vanes. If impulse force was continuously acting on the blade for a long time, crack or wear will occur in weak parts such as root. So, it is important to know variation of nozzle impulse during the blade moving. But there is no way to measure and estimate the magnitude and direction of nozzle impulse. Therefore, this study was performed to know the variation of nozzle impulse force according to the positions of the blade and to obtain blade equivalent force and torque. This results can be used for blade stress estimation.
The flow inside an axial turbomachinery with multi-stage can be characterized as unsteady phenomena. In order to predict accurately these complex unsteady flow patterns including rotor-stator interaction effects, enormous computer resources are required. So it is not compatible in preliminary design process. In this study, steady coupled blade row flow with rotor-stator interaction solver is developed using interrow mixing model and used to predict the performance of the axial fan. To verify the computational method, the calculations are compared with experimental results and show satisfactory agreement with them. The interaction effects on the performance of the axial fan have also been studied by comparing the results of steady coupled blade row and steady single blade row flow calculation.
The 3-dimensional flow field has been investigated by numerical analysis in a 2.5MW wind turbine blade. Complicated and separated flaw phenomena in the wind turbine blade were captured by the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) steady flaw simulation using general-purpose code, CFX and the mechanism of vortex structure behavior is elucidated. The vortical flow field in a wind turbine rotor is dominated by the tip vortex and hub separation vortex. The tip vortex starts to be formed near the blade tip leading edge. As the tip vortex develops in the tangential direction, interacting with boundary layer from the blade tip trailing edge. The hub separation vortex is generated near the blade hub leading edge and develops nearly in the span-wise direction. Furthermore, 3-dimensional blade tip shape has been designed for increasing shrift power and reducing thrust force on the wind turbine blade. It is expected that the behavior of the tip vortex and hub separation vortex plays a major role in aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics.
This present work is to find optimum design of a NACA65 axial fan blade with weighted average surrogate model. The numerical analysis by Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress turbulence(SST) is discretized by finite volume approximations and solved on hexahedral grids for flow analysis. The blade aerodynamic shape is modified by six design variables for the optimization. The blade profile as well as stacking line is modified to enhance blade total efficiency. Six design variables, airfoil maximum camber, maximum camber location, leading edge radius, trailing edge radius, lean angle at 50% span and lean angle at 100% span, are selected for blade profile to enhance the total efficiency. The PBA model which is basically weighted average of the basis surrogates is used to find the optimal design in the design space from the constructed response surface model for the objective function. By the optimization, the total efficiency is increased by 1.4%.

As a high specific speed pump, the contra-rotating axial flow pump with two rotors rotating reversely has been proved with higher hydraulic and cavitation performance, while in our previous researches, the potential interaction between two blade rows was distinctly observed for our prototype rotors designed with equal rotational speed for both front and rear rotors. Based on the theoretical and experimental evidences, a rotational speed optimization methodology was proposed and applied in the design of a new combination of contra-rotating rotors, primarily in expectation of the optimized blade pressure distributions as well as pertinently improved hydraulic performances including cavitation performance. In the present study, given one stationary and two rotating frames in the contra-rotating rotors case, a pressure measurement concept taking account of the revolutions of both front and rear rotors simultaneously was adopted. The casing wall pressure data sampled in time domain was successfully transferred into space domain, by which the ensemble averaged blade-to-blade pressure distributions at the blade tip of two contra-rotating rotors under different operation conditions were studied. It could be seen that the rotor pair with the optimized rotational speed combination as well as work division, shows more reasonable blade-to-blade pressure distribution and well weakened potential interaction. Moreover, combining the loading curves estimated by the measured casing wall pressure, the cavitation performance of the rotor pairs with new rotational speed combination were proved to be superior to those of the prototype pairs.

In this study, the performance of an impeller according to blade length and pitch angle was studied experimentally by building a variable pitch impeller while changing blade length to review the effect of blade length and pitch angle on a fan's performance. The pitch angle was changed in six steps from $20^{\circ}{\sim}45^{\circ}$ at intervals of $5^{\circ}$ while the blade lengths were changed to 90 mm, 100 mm, 110 mm and 120 mm with an identical airfoil shape while carrying out the experiment. The results are summarized as follows: The air flow per static pressure of axial fans increased linearly with increase of pitch angle, but the high static pressure showed a decrease at a pitch angle of $35^{\circ}$. The shaft power increased proportionally to the pitch angle at all blade lengths; the larger the pitch angle, the larger the measured increase of shaft power. This is because the drag at the fan's front increases with the pitch angle. In the axial fans considered in this research, the flow and increase of static pressure amount increased up to a pitch angle of $30^{\circ}$ but decreased rapidly above $35^{\circ}$.
