  • This paper presents a procedure for the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics of a sirocco fan. For the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analyses of the sirocco fan, three-dimensional steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a shear stress transport turbulence model for turbulence closure. The flow analyses were performed on a hexahedral grid using a finite-volume solver. The validation of the numerical results is performed by comparing with experimental data for the pressure, efficiency and power. The internal flow analyses of the sirocco fan are performed to understand the unstable flow phenomenon on the casing for the wall pressure and internal flow characteristics at each position. It was found that fluctuation of pressure and locally concentrated noise source are observed near the cut-off and expansion regions of the casing.

  • Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS) and Large Eddy Simulation(LES) simulation of an axial flow fan are calculated upon same conditions and computational grids in order to study aeroacoustic noise of an axial flow fan numerically. Results of computed performance and predicted noise are compared with those of measurement. Both performances show accurate results with a significant difference of less than 5%. However, noise of LES result is more close to measured noise qualitatively than URANS. Levels of tonal noises of both LES and URANS are quite similar with those of measured at BPF(Blade Passing Frequency) in sound spectrum. However, as leading edge separation and tip vortex shedding phenomena of LES are showed more clearly than those of URANS, sound level of broadband noise of LES corresponds better than that of URANS, especially.

  • Straight absorptive silencers have been designed to reduce the noise level of a centrifugal blower. Three-dimensional boundary element method is used for the design of absorptive silencers which consist of a perforated main pipe and a outer chamber filled with fibrous material. The experimental results show that the absorptive silencer reduces up to 8 dB(A) in the overall sound pressure level of the blower and up to 15 dB at the blade passing frequency. It is also found that the gap between the silencer and the impeller may substantially alter the acoustic performance of the silencers. The transmission loss predicted by the boundary element method follows overall trends of the measured insertion loss. The experiments also show that the impact of the silencers on the aerodynamic performance of the blower is minimum.

  • Centrifugal turbo blower is requested highly efficiency and low noise in FCEV, but the noise generated by this machine causes of the most serious problems in the NVH performance. In general, centrifugal turbo blower is dominated by mechanical noise and aerodynamic noise. Mechanical noise is generated by rotation of the bearing, misalignment and unbalance. And aerodynamic noise is generated by the strong intersection between the flow discharged from the impeller and the cut-off in the casing. The first object of this study is to comprehend a noise property of the blower through the noise test. And, second object is to bring up the method that can reduce blower noise.

  • In the Over-The-Range, the outlet size is limited by the industrial standards. Therefor to enlarge the volume of cavity, the installation height of ventilation fan is become small, the system resistance is higher than before. For that reason, the important design variables such as the diameter of a fan, the scroll expansion angle, etc. which play the significant role on flow rate and noise, are confined. In this study, we made an experiment of the diameter of fans relation to scroll expansion angle and investigated flow rate of the length of fans in enlarged cavity volume of OTR, and then we designed the new scroll to improve the flow rate and noise level. As a result, flow rate increased to 110% compared to current scroll and the blade passing frequency of a fan is disappeared by inclined cut-off shapes.

  • Wind turbines produce aerodynamic noise which fluctuate periodically at a blade passing frequency. This sound characteristic is called amplitude modulation, or swishing sound. Several previous studies claimed that this amplitude modulation has a possibility to increase noise annoyance. Thus, this study performed a listening test to find the relationship between the amplitude modulation in wind turbine noise on noise annoyance. The stimuli for the listening test was recorded from a 1.5MW wind turbine in Jeju island. The result of the listening test shows that the amplitude modulation in wind turbine noise significantly increase noise annoyance. Moreover, this study analytically examined the effect of amplitude modulation on noise perception. The result indicates that amplitude modulated sound can be easily perceived even though the background noise level is higher than the sound level of the signal.

  • The objective of this research is to suggest the noise prediction method of the centrifugal compressor. It is focused on the Blade Passing Frequency (BPF) component which is regarded as the main part of the rotating impeller noise. Euler solver is used to simulate the flow-field of the centrifugal compressor and time-dependent pressure data are calculated to perform the near-field noise prediction by Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) formulation. Indirect Boundary Element Method (IBEM) is applied to consider the noise propagation effect. Pressure fluctuations of the inlet and the outlet in the centrifugal compressor impeller are presented and Sound Pressure Level (SPL) prediction results are compared with the experimental data.

  • This paper described the characteristic of vibration in wind turbine system including gearbox housing, gear drive, blade, generator. Especially, in planetary gear set, planet gears are supported by flexible pin. So, in planet gear, to consider not only torsional movement but also lateral movement. And include housing movement, because wind turbine system is supported by mount. To find out the characteristic of vibration, take the excitation source and study campbell diagram in operating range. Results of campbell diagram, resonances are occurred at 81.2HZ, 104.7Hz by 2nd tooth passing frequency. And resonance are also occurred at 264.5HZ, 377Hz, 424.6Hz by 3th tooth passing frequency. From the result, take vibration reduced measures.

  • A diesel engine is equipped with a turbocharger for providing more power at a low engine speed region by supplying charge air to combustion chambers. The turbocharger makes it possible to satisfy stringent emission regulations and customers' demand of enjoying the fun to drive by increasing engine performance. However, the turbocharger has the disadvantage of making BPF(Blade Passing Frequency), hissing, surge, whistle, and blow noises. Among them, reducing the blow noise, a narrow-band noise(a general range : 1800~2000Hz), is possible by using a resonator that controls the narrow frequency band governing the resonance in the intake system. In this study, the optimum location of the resonator is found by employing Boost as a CAE(Computer Aided Engineering) tool and is confirmed by experiments of an engine dynamo test and a real vehicle test.
