Software Development for the Performance Evaluation and Blade Design of a Pitch-Controlled HAWT based on BEMT (날개요소 운동량 이론을 이용한 피치제어형 수평축 풍력터빈 블레이드 설계 및 성능평가 소프트웨어 개발)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a software for the performance evaluation and blade design of a pitch-controlled HAWT using BEMT(Blade Element Momentum Theory) with Prandtl's tip loss. The HERACLES V2.0 software consist of three major part ; basic blade design, aerodynamic coefficient mapping and performance calculation including stall or pitch control option. A 1MW wind turbine blade was designed at the rated wind speed(12m/s) composing five different airfoils such as FFA-W-301, DU91-W250, DU93-W-210, NACA 63418 and NACA 63415 from hub to tip. The mechanical power predicted by BEMT at the rated wind speed is about 1.27MW. Also, CFD analysis was performed to confirm the validity of the BEMT results. The comparison results show good agreement about the error of 6.5% in rated mechanical power.

The effects of blade-pitch control on the performance of semi-submersible-type floating offshore wind turbines

  • The effects of BPC (blade pitch control) on FOWT (floating offshore wind turbine) motions and generated power are investigated by using a fully-coupled turbine-floater-mooring simulation program. In this regard, two example FOWTs, OC4-5MW semi-submersible FOWT and KRISO four-3MW-units FOWT, are selected since the numerical simulations of those two FOWTs have been verified against experiments in authors' previous studies. Various simulations are performed changing BPC natural frequency (BPCNF), BPC damping ratio (BPCDR), and wind speeds. Through the numerical simulations, it was demonstrated that negative damping can happen for platform pitch motions and its influences are affected by BPCNF, BPCDR, and wind speeds. If BPCNF is significantly larger than platform-pitch natural frequency, the pitch resonance can be very serious due to the BPC-induced negative-damping effects, which should be avoided in the FOWT design. If wind speed is significantly higher than the rated wind velocity, the negative damping effects start to become reduced. Other important findings are also given through systematic sensitivity investigations.

  • An electro-mechanical actuator (EMA) is an actuator that combines an electric motor with a mechanical power transmission elements, and it is suitable for urban air mobility (UAM) in terms of design freedom and maintenance. In this paper, the author presents the research results of the EMA that controls the rotor blade pitch angle of UAM. The actuator is based on an inverted roller screw and controls the blade pitch angle through a two-bar linkage. The dynamic equations for the actuator alone and the blade pitching motion with actuator were derived. For the latter, the equivalent moment of inertia is variable depending on the link angle due to the two-bar linkage. The variations of the equivalent moments of inertia are analyzed and compared in terms of the nut motion and the blade pitch motion. For an example model, the variation of the equivalent moment of inertia of the former is smaller than the latter, so it is judged that the dynamic equations derived from the point of view of the nut motion is suitable for the controller design.

  • A particle image velocimetry (PIV) was applied to a flow measurement in a transonic centrifugal impeller. A phase locked measurement technique every $20\%$ blade pitch enabled a reconstruction of a velocity field over one blade pitch. The measured velocity field at the inducer of impeller clearly showed a shock wave generated on the suction surface of a blade.

  • Wind turbine system converts wind energy into electric energy. Since the velocity of wind is random in nature, control of the angular velocity of the blade is necessary in order to generate high quality electric power. The control of a blade can be divided into a stall regulation and a pitch control types. The stall regulation type which is based on the characteristics of an aerodynamic stall of the blades is simple and cheap, but it suffers from fluctuation of the resulting power. Or the contrary, pitch control type is based on the fact that the torque of the blade can be changed by varying the pitch angle of the blade. It is mechanically and mathematically complicated, but the control performance is better than that of the stall regulation type. This paper suggests a method of denying a mathematical modeling of the wind turbine system, and develops a speed control algorithm by pitch control. The validity of the algorithm is demonstrated with the results produced through sets of simulation.

  • This study is for the pitch control of blade, used in most horizontal-axis wind turbine systems, to sustain the maximum power output supplied to grid. The control of a blade can be divided into a stall regulation and a pitch control methods. The stall regulation method using an aerodynamic stall is simple and cheap, but it suffers from fluctuation of the resulting power. Pitch control method is mechanically and mathematically complicated, but the control performance is better than that of the stall regulation method. In this paper 2.5MW MOD-2 wind turbine system is adopted to be controlled by a pitch controller with PI method. The simulation performed by MA TLAB will show the variation of frequency, generator output, and pitch angle.

  • Optimal aerodynamic design for the pitch-controlled horizontal axis wind turbine and its aerodynamic performance for various pitch angles are performed numerically by using the blade element momentum theory. The numerical calculation includes effects such as Prandtl‘s tip loss, airfoil distribution, and wake rotation. Six different airfoils are distributed along the blade span, and the special airfoil i.e. airfoil of 40% thickness ratio is adopted at the hub side to have structural integrity. The nonlinear chord obtained from the optimal design procedure is linearized to decrease the weight and to increase the productivity with very little change of the aerodynamic performance. From the comparisons of the power, thrust, and torque coefficients with corresponding values of different pitch angles, the aerodynamic performance shows delicate changes for just $3^{\circ}$ increase or decrease of the pitch angle. For precisive pitch control, it requires the pitch control algorithm and its drive mechanism below $3^{\circ}$ increment of pitch angle. The maximum torque is generated when the speed ratio is smaller than the designed one.

  • The discrete noise of the cross-flow fan with uniform/random pitch blades is predicted by computational methods. With the time dependent surface pressure data obtained by solving the Wavier-Stokes equation, the acoustic pressure is calculated by the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. The positions of the blade noise source are identified through investigation of the acoustic pressure history induced by one blade, and it is confirmed that the dominant noise source is near the stabilizer. Since the acoustic pressure of the random pitch fan fluctuates according to blade passing, the dominant BPF noise for the uniform pitch fan is modified into some reduced discrete noises which have a 50Hz difference from BPF.

  • This paper deals with a pitch control for reducing load of the wind turbine system. To make a model of the wind turbine system, the Momentum Theory and Blade Element Theory are used. Considering wind shear, wind model was also built. Due to a difference of the wind speed between upper parts and lower parts of the sweep area, overturning moment of the wind turbine is generated. So, in this paper through analyzing of the system model of the wind turbine, a control algorithm which was able to achieve both maintaining power and reducing overturning moment was proposed. Using matlab simulink, controller performance was verified.

  • To analyze the performance of Wind turbine of the drag force type, 3-D RANS equations were solved by the iterative time marching method on sliding multiblock grid system. The numerical flow simulations by changing blade number and pitch angle were carried out : blade number = 15, 20 circumferentially; pitch angle = $30^{\circ},\; 50^{\circ}$ radially. The torque coefficient was also calculated.
