  • This paper presents a new method for Huffman decoding specially designed for the MPEG-2 AAC audio. The method significantly enhances the processing efficiency of the conventional Huffman decoding realized with the ordinary binary tree search method. A data structure is newly designed based on the numerical interpretation of the incoming bit stream and its utilization for the offset oriented nodes allocation. The experimental results show the average performance enhancement of 54% and 665%, compared to those of the conventional binary tree search method and the sequential search method, respectively.

  • In this study, information compression based on the wavelet technique is described. The principle of signal or image compression is performed by optimization of quantization, that is the bit allocation taking advantage of their energy concentration in low frequency components. The wavelet transform is one of frequency decomposition, such as the discrete cosine transform or sub-band filtering, and it is also implemented as a filter bank. Wavelet transform with use of spatially localized basis function can reduce several drawbacks in conventional methods. The benifit of wavelet based compression method is described as comparing the transform method to another ones.

  • The IEEE 802.11e medium access control (MAC) is an emerging standard to support Quality of Service (QoS). A HCCA (HCF controlled channel access) scheduler of the standard IEEE 802.11e is only efficient for flows with strict constant bit rate (CBR) characteristics. In this paper, we propose a new HCCA scheduling scheme that aims to be efficient for both CBR and VBR flows. The proposed scheme uses fuzzy queue length predictions to tune its time allocation to stations. We present a set of simulations and provide performance comparisons with the reference HCCA scheduler.

  • This paper demonstrates OFDM with adaptive modulation applied to Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. We apply an optimization algorithm to obtain a bit and power allocation for each subcarrier assuming instantaneous channel knowledge. The analysis and simulation is considered in two stages. The first stage involves the application of a variable-rate variable-power MQAM technique for a Single-Input Single-Output(SISO) OFDM system. This is compared with the performance of fixed OFDM transmission where a constant rate is applied to each subcarrier. The second stage applies adaptive modulation to a general MIMO system by making use of the Singular Value Decomposition to separate the MIMO channel into parallel subchannels. For a two-input antenna, two-output antenna system, the performance is compared with the performance of a system using selection diversity at the transmitter and maximal ratio combining at the receiver.

  • Lempel-Ziv coding is one of the most famous source coding schemes. The output of this source coding is usually a non-uniform code, which requires additional source coding, such as arithmetic coding, to reduce a redundancy. However, this additional source code increases complexity and decoding latency. Thus, this paper proposes the optimal maximum a-posteriori (MAP) receiver for non-uniform source non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with symmetric superposition coding (SSC). First, we derive an analytical expression of the bit-error rate (BER) for non-uniform source NOMA with SSC. Then, Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the BER of the optimal MAP receiver for the non-uniform source improves slightly, compared to that of the conventional receiver for the uniform source. Moreover, we also show that the BER of an approximate analytical expression is in a good agreement with the BER of Monte Carlo simulation. As a result, the proposed optimal MAP receiver for non-uniform source could be a promising scheme for NOMA with SSC, to reduce complexity and decoding latency due to additional source coding.

  • In most existing researches on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with symmetric superposition coding (SSC), uniform sources have been usually considered. For the first part in this two-part paper, for the strongest channel gain user, we showed that the bit-error rate (BER) for the optimal maximum a-posteriori (MAP) receiver for the non-uniform source improves slightly, compared to that of the conventional receiver for the uniform sources. We demonstrate that in communication scenarios of the non-uniform source NOMA schemes, for the weakest channel gain user, the BER performance of the optimal MAP receiver for a non-uniform source improves greatly, compared to that of the conventional receiver for uniform sources. We first derive an analytical expression of the BER for non-uniform source NOMA with SSC. Then, simulations demonstrate that the BER of the optimal MAP receiver for the non-uniform source improves, compared with that of the conventional maximum likelihood (ML) receiver for the uniform sources. In result, the proposed optimal MAP receiver for the non-uniform source could be a promising scheme for SSC NOMA, with improved BER performances.

  • As the sixth generation (6G) promising technique, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has recently attracted much attention. The IRS based wireless communication is expected to deploy the upcoming 6G mobile networks, to increase energy and spectrum efficiency in the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks. In this paper, we compare the bit-error rate (BER) performances for phase-shift schemes of IRS non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). First, we derive a BER expression for the equalizing phase-shift scheme in IRS-NOMA networks. Then we compare the BER of the equalizing phase-shift scheme to that of the identical phase-shift scheme in IRS-NOMA networks, and show the BER improvement of the equalizing phase-shift scheme IRS NOMA over the identical phase-shift scheme IRS NOMA. Furthermore, we also validate the proposed analytical BER for the equalizing phase-shift scheme in IRS-NOMA by Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate that they well match each other.

  • Towards the sixth generation (6G) mobile networks, spectrum and energy efficiency of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmissions in the fifth generation (5G) wireless system have been improved by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technologies. However, the reflecting devices of an IRS tend to be correlated because they are placed close on the surface each other. In this paper, we present an analysis on the correlated IRS in NOMA cellular networks. Specifically, we consider the bit-error rate (BER) performances for correlated-IRS in NOMA networks. First, based on the central limit theorem, we derive an approximate analytical expression of the BER for correlated-IRS NOMA systems, by using the second moment of the channel gain. Then we validate the proposed analytical BER by Monte Carlo simulations, and show that they are in good agreement. In addition, we also show numerically the BER improvement of the correlated-IRS NOMA over the conventional independent-IRS NOMA.

  • This paper proposes a system that translates the machine independent intermediate micro-programming language(IML) into microcode, using the register allocation algorithm, the microinstruction format and the field information for the target machine emulation on a microprogrammable host machine. The IML, which is for PDP-8 emulation on a microprogrammable hypothsetical 16 bit host machine, is microcoded by the proposed system, and the validity of the algorithm in the proposed system is verified by executing a test program of the target machine on the emulator.
