  • The miniaturization of Bird's Beak generated at the field oxidation has been studied by adding polysilicon layer between the silicon nitride and pad oxide stack, which is the basic structure of Conventional LOCOS. The size and shape of Bird's Beak were intensively observed by SEM, and also the electrical characteristics of Bird's Beak-reduced LOCOS structure were compared with those of Conventional LOCOS. The length of Bird's Beak was reached up to $0.20-0.28{\mu}m$, while about to $0.50-0.53{\mu}m$ in conventional LOCOS, resulting in 60% reduction.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the breeding bird community by using guild concept in Mt. Baekwoon Research Forest of Seoul National University. Bird Community was studied by line transect method during the breeding seasons of birds in 1982 and its results were compared and analyzed with the Park et al. Work in 1993. Guilds were characterized by nesting and foraging sites as follows: nesting guild - (H) hole, (C) canopy, (B) bush, (E) edge; and foraging guild - (o) outside, (c) canopy, (b) bush. Bush-nesting guilds such as Tricolor Flycatcher (Ficedula zanthopygia), Blue-and-White Flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana), Stonechat (Saxicola torquata), Bush Warbler (cettia diphone) and Skylark (Alauda arvensis) had disappeared after ten years. Outside-foraging guilds such as Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo), sparrow Hawk (Accipiter nisus) and Carrion Crow (Corvus corone) also were not observed. There was a sharp decrease of species richness of bush-nesting guild, canopy-foraging guild and bush-foraging guild compared to ten years ago. These decreases indicate that forest environment of this area has been changed for the ten years, and guild concept in this study can be used usefully to elucidate the change of bird community according to the change in forest environment.

  • When free-ranging birds are accidentally killed or die, there may be greater potential for their associated ticks to detach, seek alternate hosts, and become established. We examined 711 carcasses of 95 avian species for ticks at a stopover island of migratory birds in the Republic of Korea where only Ixodes nipponensis and I. persulcatus were previously reported from local mammals and vegetation. A total of 16 ticks, I. turdus and Haemaphysalis flava, were collected from 8 fresh carcasses belonging to 5 avian species. Despite their known abundance on migratory birds and mainland Korea, these species had not colonized the isolated insular ecosystem possibly due to the low abundance and diversity of local hosts. The results imply that increasing human impact, such as the anthropogenic mortality of migratory birds and the introduction of non-native mammalian hosts, will increase the potential invasion and colonization risk of ticks. This finding also suggests that tick surveillance consisting of fresh carcasses of dead migratory birds may provide additional information, often ignored in surveillance of ticks on live birds, for the potential introduction of non-native ticks and associated pathogens affecting animal and human health.

  • Purpose: Nasal bone fracture is the most common type of facial bone fracture. The standard 6-view photography was not adequate to support the evaluation of nasal deformity and the results of closed reduction. The authors have standardized a bird's eye view photography to more effectively evaluate this nasal deformity. Methods: We reviewed the medical records and radiologic studies of 63 nasal bone fracture patients. We had taken clinical photography including bird's eye view that was standardized as nasal tip was aligned to Cupid's bow of upper lip and light was focused on the nasion of all 63 patients. Results: Nasal deviations and reductions were more noticeable on the newly standardized bird's eye view. This clinical photography was very useful to explain the results of reduction. Conclusion: It was concluded that this photography can be more reliable for evaluation of severity of nasal deformity and the result of closed reduction.

  • In this study, the elevational distribution of breeding birds in Seoraksan National Park, Korea was investigated. Forty-six species of birds were documented from line transect surveys taken from Seorakdong at 230 m above sea level (a.s.l.) to the Daechungbong summit at 1708 m asl. Birdspecies richness and diversity were highest in Seorakdong and lowest at the Daechungbong summit. As elevation increased, bird species richness and diversity decreased, with a humped-shape trend being observed between 700 m and 1200 m a.s.l. Stepwise analyses revealed that breeding bird species diversity indices were significantly negatively correlated with elevation (r2 = 0.327, P < 0.001) and positively correlated with vegetational coverage (r2 = 0.324, P = 0.046). Higher elevations supported fewer birds than low and intermediate elevations. Projections at the local scale, including data on behavior and habitat use by birds, will be necessary for optimal conservation and management of the bird communities in Seoraksan National Park.

  • This study was conducted from February 2005 to October 2007 to investigate bird distribution at three types of forest (mixed, broadleaf and coniferous) in Gwangneung forest. As a result, more birds used mixed forests than broodleaf and coniferous forest. During forest was opened to public, more birds also frequently used mixed forests. When forest was closed to public, there was no preference among three forest types. We also compared the number of species and individuals between open and restricted area. More species and individuals used restricted area.

  • The function of urban parks as wildlife habitats is becoming increasingly important. The urban park serves as a key area for preserving urban biodiversity. The purpose of this study is to estimate the bird species diversity in 30 parks in Cheonan city and quantitatively analyze the influence of vegetation, park structure and landscape connectivity index. As the results, a total of 27 birds species and 1,509 individuals were found at the sites and the largest number of birds were found in the Cheongsa park with 17 species. The optimal regression model was selected as the explanatory variables for the logged park area (LPA), the tree cover ratio (Co_T) and the patch betweenness centrality (PB). LPA and Co_T mean the internal characteristics of the park, and PB was the external environmental variable meaning landscape connectivity. LPA was the most important factor (73.3%) as bird habitat, and the PB could be interpreted as a factor that should be considered as important (26.7%). It will be possible to consider these environmental variables in the park and green area construction and management.

  • A new open structure of the bird-cage RF coil is proposed. By applying in-phase or out-of-phase voltage to the two terminals of the open bird-cage RF coil, desirable level of RF field uniformity has been achieved. Theoretical resonance frequencies of the RF coil has been obtained and compared with experimental ones. The quality factor of the open bird-cage RF coil has been found to be comparable to the one of the conventional RF coil.

  • This study is to apply QuickBird satellite image for the simulation of storm runoff in a small rural watershed. For a $1.05km^2$ watershed located in Goesan-Gun of Chungbuk Province, the land use from the QuickBird image was produced by on-screening digitising after ortho-rectifying using 2 m DEM. For 3 cases of land use, soil and elevation scale (1:5,000, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000), SCS-CN and the watershed physical parameters were prepared for the storm runoff model, HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Modelling System). The model was evaluated for each case and compared the simulated results with couple of selected storm events.
