Comparison of Computer and Human Face Recognition According to Facial Components

  • Face recognition is a biometric technology used to identify individuals based on facial feature information. Previous studies of face recognition used features including the eye, mouth and nose; however, there have been few studies on the effects of using other facial components, such as the eyebrows and chin, on recognition performance. We measured the recognition accuracy affected by these facial components, and compared the differences between computer-based and human-based facial recognition methods. This research is novel in the following four ways compared to previous works. First, we measured the effect of components such as the eyebrows and chin. And the accuracy of computer-based face recognition was compared to human-based face recognition according to facial components. Second, for computer-based recognition, facial components were automatically detected using the Adaboost algorithm and active appearance model (AAM), and user authentication was achieved with the face recognition algorithm based on principal component analysis (PCA). Third, we experimentally proved that the number of facial features (when including eyebrows, eye, nose, mouth, and chin) had a greater impact on the accuracy of human-based face recognition, but consistent inclusion of some feature such as chin area had more influence on the accuracy of computer-based face recognition because a computer uses the pixel values of facial images in classifying faces. Fourth, we experimentally proved that the eyebrow feature enhanced the accuracy of computer-based face recognition. However, the problem of occlusion by hair should be solved in order to use the eyebrow feature for face recognition.

Development of a Visitor Recognition System Using Open APIs for Face Recognition (얼굴 인식 Open API를 활용한 출입자 인식 시스템 개발)

  • Recently, as the interest rate and necessity for security is growing, the demands for a visitor recognition system are being increased. In order to recognize a visitor in visitor recognition systems, the various biometric methods are used. In this paper, we propose a visitor recognition system based on face recognition. The visitor recognition system improves the face recognition performance by integrating several open APIs as a single algorithm and by performing the ensemble of the recognition results. For the performance evaluation, we collected the face data for about five months and measured the performance of the visitor recognition system. As the results of the performance measurement, the visitor recognition system shows a higher face recognition rate than using a single face recognition API, meeting the requirements on performance.

  • Clinicians often have difficulties diagnosing patients with subtle phenotypes of Noonan syndrome phenotypes. Facial recognition technology can help in the identification of several genetic syndromes with facial dysmorphic features, especially those with mild or atypical phenotypes. A patient visited our clinic at 5 years of age with short stature. She was administered growth hormone treatment for 6 years, but her growth curve was still below the 3rd percentile. She and her mother had wide-spaced eyes and short stature, but there were no other remarkable features of a genetic syndrome. We analyzed their photographs using a smartphone facial recognition application. The results suggested Noonan syndrome; therefore, we performed targeted next-generation sequencing of genes associated with short stature. The results showed that they had a mutation on the PTPN11 gene known as the pathogenic mutation of Noonan syndrome. Facial recognition technology can help in the diagnosis of Noonan syndrome and other genetic syndromes, especially in patients with mild phenotypes.

  • Gait Recognition is a new technique to identify the people by the way they walk. Human gait is a spatio-temporal phenomenon that typifies the motion characteristics of an individual. The proposed method makes a simple but efficient attempt to gait recognition. For each video file, spatial silhouettes of a walker are extracted by an improved background subtraction procedure using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). Here GMM is used as a parametric probability density function represented as a weighted sum of Gaussian component densities. Then, the relevant features are extracted from the silhouette tracked from the given video file using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method. The Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLDA) classifier is used in the classification of dimensional reduced image derived by the PCA method for gait recognition. Although gait images can be easily acquired, the gait recognition is affected by clothes, shoes, carrying status and specific physical condition of an individual. To overcome this problem, it is combined with footprint as a multimodal biometric system. The minutiae is extracted from the footprint and then fused with silhouette image using the Discrete Stationary Wavelet Transform (DSWT). The experimental result shows that the efficiency of proposed fusion algorithm works well and attains better result while comparing with other fusion schemes.

  • OpenBR is a framework for researching new facial recognition methods, improving existing algorithms, interacting with commercial systems, measuring perceived performance, and deploying automated biometric systems. Designed to facilitate rapid algorithm prototyping, it features a mature core framework, flexible plug-in system, and open and closed source development support. The established algorithms can be used for specific forms such as face recognition, age estimation, and gender estimation. In this paper, we describe the framework of OpenBR and implement facial recognition, gender estimation, and age estimation using supported programs.

  • In the past year, the increasing concern about the biometric recognition makes the great activities on the security fields, such as the entrance control or user authentication. In particular, although the features of face recognition, such as user friendly and non-contact made it to be used widely, unhappily it has some disadvantages of low accuracy or low Re-attempts Rates. For this reason, I suggest the new approach to re-classify the classified data of recognition result data to solve the problems. For this study, I will use the typical appearance-based, PCA(Principal Component Analysis) algorithm and verify the performance improvement by adopting the re-classification approach using 200 peoples (10 pictures per one person).

  • Recently, the importance of personal information security has emerged. In particular, the importance of biometrics such as voice recognition, fingerprint recognition, face recognition has been highlighted in various fields such as access control, banking security, personal PC security and so on. But if such conventional security techniques are likely to be recognized by an external factor failure. In contrast, if the vein recognition is impossible to copy and counterfeit. Therefore less likely to fail due to external factors has the advantage. In this paper, propose a preprocessing method to improve on the existing vein pattern recognition with high reliability than existing biometric technologies.

  • Face recognition is a very important process in video monitoring and is a type of biometric technology. It is mainly used for identification and security purposes, such as ID cards, licenses, and passports. The recognition process has many variables and is complex, so development has been slow. In this paper, we proposed a face recognition method using CNN, which has been re-examined due to the recent development of computers and algorithms, and compared with the feature comparison method, which is an existing face recognition algorithm, to verify performance. The proposed face search method is divided into a face region extraction step and a learning step. For learning, face images were standardized to 50×50 pixels, and learning was conducted while minimizing unnecessary nodes. In this paper, convolution and polling-based techniques, which are one of the deep learning technologies, were used for learning, and 1,000 face images were randomly selected from among 7,000 images of Caltech, and as a result of inspection, the final recognition rate was 98%.

  • 본 논문은 생체인식시스템에서 단일시스템의 각각의 특징을 바탕으로 신뢰성을 증가시키는 것에 있다. 간단하면서 높은 인식률을 가지는 지문과 개개인의 음성을 다중생체인식에 활용하여 다중생체인식 시스템을 구현 하였다. 화자인식부에서는 DSP를 이용하여 화자인식을 수행하고, 이후 지문인식부에서 지문 특징점을 추출하여 KSOM신경망 알고리즘을 이용하여 인식을 수행하였다. 그리고 각 인식부의 전체적인 제어는 ATmega16L을 사용하였다. 또한 인증결과를 PC에 MFC로 디스플레이 한다.
