The freshwater red algal genus Sheathia contains species with heterocortication (both bulbous and cylindrical cells covering the main axis) and homocortication (only cylindrical cells). When the genus was proposed, the species with heterocortication were revised, but all specimens with homocortication were assigned to Sheathia arcuata with the caveat that it may represent a species complex. Recent studies have described new species with homocortication and S. arcuata has been rendered paraphyletic. In the current study, new sequences of the rbcL and 5′ region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I markers were combined with previously published data to construct a robust phylogeny and circumscribe new species. Four new species, S. abscondita, S. californica, S. plantuloides, and S. transpacifica are proposed. Examination of morphological characters among homocorticate species show no diagnostic characters to distinguish among species, whereas S. plantuloides is only known from sporophytes (chantransia) so it lacks the typical morphological characters derived from the gametophytes for comparison. Although DNA sequence data would be needed to make a positive species identification, geography could be employed to narrow the identification to one or two species. The genus is geographically widespread having been recorded from oceanic islands and five continents, whereas the individual species typically occur on a single continent. With this study, the number of species recognized in Sheathia is raised to 17; seven heterocorticate and 10 homocorticate, making this genus one of the most species rich in the Batrachospermales. As well, the resulting phylogeny provides insights into the evolution of heterocortication in Sheathia.
The euplotid hypotrich collected from a puddle, Jeju-do in 2002 and cultured in the laboratory was identified as Euplotes muscorum Dragesco, 1970. The species is reported for the first time from Korea. The description was based on the observation of living specimens, protargol impregnation and biometrical analysis. This species is characterized by following diagnosis: 63-78 ${\mu}m$ in length, 40-52 ${\mu}m$ in width in vivo, 9 frontoventral cirri, 5 transverse cirri,4 caudal cirri, 1 micro- and macronucleus, adoral zone of membranelles with 32-36 adoral membranelles covering approximately 2/3 of body length, 8 dorsal kineties, mid-dorsal kinety with 20-24 cilia 3nd dargyrome complex type. This species with 9 frontoventral cirrotype is very similar to E. muscicola Kahl, 1932. The differences between these two species are: E. muscorum has 8 dorsal kineties and complex dargyrome type, while E. muscicola 9 dorsal kineties and multiple dargyrome type.
In this paper we have provided an extensive survey of the databases and other resources related to the current research in bioinformatics and the issues that confront the database researcher in helping the biologists. Initially we give an overview of the concepts and principles that are fundamental in understanding the basis of the data that has been captured in these databases. We briefly trace the evolution of biological advances and point out the importance of capturing data about genes, the fundamental building blocks that encode the characteristics of life and proteins that are the essential ingredients for sustaining life. The study of genes and proteins is becoming extremely important and is being known as genomics and proteomics, respectively. Whereas there are numerous databases related to various subfields of biology, we have maintained a focus on genomic and proteomic databases which are the crucial stepping stones for other fields and are expected to play an important role in the future applications of biology and medicine. A detailed listing of these databases with information about their sizes, formats and current status is presented. Related databases like molecular pathways and interconnection network databases are mentioned, but their full coverage would be beyond the scope of a single paper. We comment on the peculiar nature of the data in biology that presents special problems in organizing and accessing these databases. We also discuss the capabilities needed for database development and information management in the bioinformatics arena with particular attention to ontology development. Two research case studies based on our own research are summarized dealing with the development of a new genome database called Mitomap and the creation of a framework for discovery of relationships among genes from the biomedical literature. The paper concludes with an overview of the applications that will be driven from these databases in medicine and healthcare. A glossary of important terms is provided at the end of the paper.

Various literatures related computing of information processing have been recently shown the researches inspired from the remarkably excellent human capabilities which recognize and categorize very complex visual patterns such as body motions and facial expressions. Applied from human's outstanding ability of perception, the classification function of visual sequences without context information is specially crucial task for computer vision to understand both the coding and the retrieval of spatio-temporal patterns. This paper presents a biological process based action recognition model of computer vision, which is inspired from visual information processing of human brain for action recognition of visual sequences. Proposed model employs the structure of neural fields of bio-inspired visual perception on detecting motion sequences and discriminating visual patterns in human brain. Experimental results show that proposed recognition model takes not only into account several biological properties of visual information processing, but also is tolerant of time-warping. Furthermore, the model allows robust temporal evolution of classification compared to researches of action recognition. Presented model contributes to implement bio-inspired visual processing system such as intelligent robot agent, etc.
A new species of draconematid nematode, Paradraconema jejuense n. sp., is described from the shallow sublittoral coarse sediments of Jeju Island, Korea. Paradraconema jejuense n. sp. is most similar to P. antarcticum Allen and Noffsinger, 1978 in having similar habitus (long slender body) and amphideal fovea (doubled elongate spiral in male and circular spiral in female), but is distinguished by the following characteristics: larger number of posterior sublateral adhesion tubes (10 in male and 11-12 in female) and subventral adhesion tubes (16 in male and 17-18 in female), fewer cephalic acathiform setae on rostrum (a pair of small cephalic acathiform setae in both sexes), the absence of eye-spots, and the presence of a differentiated lateral field in mid-body region. This is the first taxonomic report on Paradraconema species from Korea.
A taxonomic study on the marine sponges was conducted with materials which were collected from Ulleung Island and Chuja Island, Korea by SCUBA diving during the period of July 2000 to May 2005. Among them, two species, Mycale (Aegogropila) jukdoensis n. sp. and Mycale (Mycale) chujaensis n. sp. are new to science. M. (A.) jukdoensis n. sp. seems closely to M. grandis based on the shape of spicules, but our new species has two categories of subtylostyles and also larger sigmas and raphides than those of M. grandis. And anisochelae I of M. (A.) jukdoensis n. sp. is smaller than that of M. grandis. M. (M.) chujaensis n. sp. is similar to M. sulgata in the growth form and size of microscleres. However, the new species has two categories of subtylostyles instead of one type in M. sulgata.
Two stichotrichid ciliates, collected from marine waters in Jeju Island, were identified as Afroamphisiella multinucleata Foissner et al., 2002 and Pseudokahliella marina (Foissner et al., 1982) Berger et al., 1985. They are recorded for the first time in Korea. The descriptions are based on examinations of living as well as protargol-impregnated specimens. These species are characterized as follows. Afroamphisiella multinucleata has a body size in vivo of $70-95{\times}20-35{\mu}m$; elongate rectangular in shape; contractile vacuole located slightly above mid-body. The adoral zone is bipartited into 3 distal and 13-17 proximal membranelles and occupies 28-35% of the body length. The frontal row comprises 1-4 cirri and one buccal cirrus. The amphisiellid median cirral row is composed of 14-21 cirri, 10-19 left marginal cirri, and 21-30 right marginal cirri. Cortical granules are yellowish. 11-20 globular/ellipsoidal macronuclear nodules arrange proximally along the cell margins. Pseudokahliella marina has a body size in vivo of $110-195{\times}40-110{\mu}m$ and broadly elliptical in shape. The adoral zone of the membranelles occupies 50-60% of the body length, and is composed of 41-70 membranelles. A prominent frontal scutum is present. The contractile vacuole is located below the mid-body. There are 11-13 frontoventral rows, including marginal rows. Caudal cirri and transverse cirri are absent. Three invariable non-fragmented bipolar dorsal kineties are present. The left and right marginal rows are composed of 22-35 and 28-40 cirri, respectively. Colourless cortical granules are present. 8-11 spherical/ellipsoidal macronuclear nodules are connected with each other by thread-like tructures, forming an inverted C-shape.

The ascarids, Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina, are probably the most common gastrointestinal helminths encountered in dogs. In order to understand biological differences of 2 ascarids, we analyzed gene expression profiles of female adults of T. canis and T. leonina using CLC Genomics Workbench, and the results were compared with those of free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. A total of 2,880 and 7,949 ESTs were collected from T. leonina and T. canis, respectively. The length of ESTs ranged from 106 to 4,637 bp with an average insert size of 820 bp. Overall, our results showed that most functional gene annotations of 2 ascarids were quite similar to each other in 3 major categories, i.e., cellular component, biological process, and molecular function. Although some different transcript expression categories were found, the distance was short and it was not enough to explain their different lifestyles. However, we found distinguished transcript differences between ascarid parasites and free-living nematodes. Understanding evolutionary genetic changes might be helpful for studies of the lifestyle and evolution of parasites.
Phosphorylation of amino acid residues in proteins, plays a major role in biological mechanism. Phosphorylation acts as a process regulating the protein activity in variable pathways such as metabolism, signal transduction and cell division. Therefore the development of ligands for phosphoamino acids are an important work for protein analysis and proteomics studies. In this study, RNA aptamers for o-phosphoserine, o-phosphotyrosine and o-phosphotyrosine which appears frequently in nature were developed by in vitro evolution method. We could obtain similar sequences from random RNAs of 40 mer by SELEX method through 10 cycles. As result, the aptamers for o-phosphoserine and o-phosphothreonine among phosphoamino acids aptamers showed high affinity of Kd=2.60 nM and 2.65 nM for their target molecules, respectively. In addition, these aptamers could be confirmed the high selectivity for their target.
As the information technology is evolved and the human genome project is finalized over the world, the Bioinformatics - the integration of abundant Biological science and information technology - has shown up and is continuously being advanced. Together with the evolution of Bioinformatics, the websites dealing with Bioinformation have been set up to provide relevant information to the Bioscientists. Among the numerous global websites, the preferred websites by the majority of domestic Bioscientists are BRIC (Biological Research Information Center) of POSTECH(Pohang University of Science and Technology) in Korea, CCBB(Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics) of KISTI(Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information), KOBIC(Korean Bioinformation Center) of KRIBB(Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology), NCBI(National Center for Biotechnology Information) in USA, EBI(European Bioinformatics Institute) in Europe and DDBJ(DNA Data Bank of Japan) in Japan. In this paper, the comparative analysis was executed by investigating contents status and functions of the above-mentioned 6 websites. In addition, questionnaire survey of Bioscience Researchers' utilization status and their needs to those 6 websites was conducted.
