  • A new species, Zabelia densipila M.-P. Hong, Y.-C. Kim & B.Y. Lee (Linnaeaceae) is described from Gangwon-do, Korea and illustrated. The new taxon resembles Z. biflora (Turcz.) Makino, but it can be distinguished by its different flowering seasons, ovaries with densely long-pilose hairs, and sequence differences in nuclear ribosomal DNA and chloroplast DNA coding regions.

  • We investigated the effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and culture medium on embryo swelling and germination of Calanthe discolor Lindl., and established a method for determining the swelling and protocorm formation of C. discolor seeds via in vitro examination of immature seeds. Treatment of immature seeds with NaOCl greatly enhanced the extent of embryo swelling and protocorm formation of immature zygote embryos compared to seeds without NaOCl treatment. The effects of the culture media were also evaluated with regard to embryo swelling and protocorm formation of in vitro cultured seeds with and without NaOCl treatment. Additionally, the effects of white fluorescent light and red and blue LEDs lights on seedling growth in in vitro culture were examined. The most suitable condition for seedling growth after 12 weeks of culture was the red LEDs light with POM medium. These results show effective asymbiotic germination and growth of C. discolor.

  • Zubovskya morii (Bey-Bienko, 1931) was rediscovered from its type locality, Mount Baekdusan, from materials collected by Bulgarian zoological expeditions to North Korea in the 1970s. This grasshopper species is endemic to North Korea and for the past 85 years was known only from a single holotype male. In the present study we describe the female Z. morii for the first time. A revised checklist of Orthoptera at Mount Baekdusan (also known as Changbaishan in China) is also provided. A new synonymy, Zubovskya longifurcula (Jin et al., 2011), syn. nov. for Zubovskya koreana Mistshenko, 1952 is proposed here.

  • The review provides the information about 46 type specimens on 35 taxa of vascular plants from Korea (Fig. 1), kept in the Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in addition to 150 taxa published before. Lectotype of Ligustrum patulum Palib is designated here.
