The Exchange of Reduced Sulfur Gases Across the Atmosphere-Teerrestrial Biosphere Interface

  • In this review, the significance of terrestrial ecosystems in the global sulfur budget has been reviewed based on the currently available databases covering the topic. In the section 1, we describe our current understanding of natural sulfur cycle in relation to most well-known natural reservoir, oceanic environment. The sections 2 and 3 provide the fundamental pictures of the rerrestrial sulfur cycle with respect to the relative importance of its individe the fundamental pictures of the terrestrial sulfur cycle with respect to the section 3, previously reported flux values for several major sulfur gases are presented for each reservoir and are intercompared to derive representative fluxes for the respective environment. In the section 4, source mechanisms for volatile sulfur species are dealt for both microscale and macroscale processes leading to their productions. In the section 5, environmental factors controlling the exchange of biogenic sulfur gases across the air-surface have been discussed. In the section 6, environmental fate of sulfur gases released into the atmosphere has been described. Finally in tie section 7, as concluding remarksm we discuss directions and suggestions to overcome various limitations encountered from previous measurement investigations of natural sulfur cycle in diverse natural ecological systems.

Flux-gradient similarity theory 적용에 따른 태화산 산림지표 토양NO플럭스 분석 (Practical Use of Flux Gradient Similarity Theory for Forest Soil NO Flux at Mt. Taewha)

  • Terrestrial vegetation has been known as a main source of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Isoprene and monoterpene among the BVOCs are most abundant species emitted by forests, and have a significant impact on atmospheric chemistry. Abundancy of these species could lead to an increase or decrease in the production of natural tropospheric ozone in forests, depending on the nitric oxide (NO) concentration. Soil is the most significant source of natural NO. Understanding of NO emission from forest soil could be critical in evaluation of air quality in the forest area. Flux-gradient similarity theory (FGST) was applied for practical use to estimate forest soil NO emission at Mt. Taewha where is available micro-meteorological data near surface monitoring from flux tower. NO fluxes calculated by FGST were compared to flux results by flow-through dynamic chamber (FDC) measurement. Surface NO emission trends were shown between two different techniques, however their magnitudes were found to be different. NO emissions measured from FDC technique were relatively higher than those from theoretical results. Daily mean NO emissions resulted from FGST during Aug. 13, 14 and 15 were $0.28{\pm}8.45$, $2.17{\pm}15.55$, and $-3.18{\pm}13.65{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$, respectively, while results from FDC were $2.26{\pm}1.44$, $5.11{\pm}3.85$, and $2.23{\pm}6.45{\mu}gm^{-2}hr^{-1}$. Trends of daily means were shown in similar pattern, which NO emissions were increasing during late afternoon ($r^2$=0.04). These emission trends could be because soil temperature and moisture influence importantly soil microbiology.

EOF와 SVD을 이용한 아프리카 지역에서 관측된 OMI HCHO 자료의 검증 (Validation of OMI HCHO with EOF and SVD over Tropical Africa)

  • 본 연구는 현재 NASA에서 제공되는 operational OMI HCHO 관측 값에서 에러를 발견하여, 월평균 HCHO 자료의 시계열에 4 차 다항식을 피팅함으로써 구한 배경 모수화(parameterization)값을 이용하여 OMI HCHO 자료의 보정을 수행하였다. 보정후의 OMI HCHO는 동태평양과 서태평양 지역에서 -1.48%, 0.65%/year 경향성을 보였으며 이 수치는 GOME(-0.99%, 1.1%/year)과 SCAIMACHY(-0.92%, 0.03%/year)의 경향성과 유사한 결과이며 적절하게 비정상적인 배경 HCHO 농도의 증가가 제거되었음을 나타낸다. 이 자료의 검증과 분석은 EOF와 SVD 통계적 분석 방법을 사용하여 아프리카 지역에서 다양한 위성 관측 값과의 (HCHO, CO, $NO_2$ 그리고 firecount) 시공간 변동성의 일치성을 비교 분석함으로써 수행되었다. 아프리카에서 MOPITT CO, OMI $NO_2$, SCIAMAHCY 그리고 OMI HCHO의 EOF와 SVD 분석 결과는 생태계화재(biomass burning)의 시공간 변동성 분포와 매우 높은 일치성을 보여준다. 그러나 OMI HCHO 관측 값은 화재가 가장 강하게 발생하는 지역의 풍하측에서 최대 값이 보이며, 화재 발생이 가장 높은 1월에 다소 낮은 HCHO 값이 보이는 등 시공간적으로 생태계 화제 분포와 차이를 보인다. 이것의 원인으로 우리는 이 지역의 열대우림의 식물활동(biogenic activity)영향으로는 설명할 수 없고, biomass burning 에어로졸에 의한 잘못된 AMF 계산이 OMI HCHO 산출에 사용됨으로써 발생한 오차라는 것을 밝혔다. AMF와 관련된 오차가 적절하게 보정된다면, 아프리카 지역의 HCHO 시공간 변동성은 생태계 화제의 변동성을 따를 것이라 예상된다. 따라서 본 연구는 통계적 기법이 위성 자료를 평가하는데 매우 효율적인 방법임을 제안한다.

미국 오레곤 남부 에오세 전호상 및 섭입대 퇴적층의 탄화수소 근원암 가능성 (Hydrocarbon Source Rock Potential of Eocene Forearc and Subduction Zone Strata, Southern Oregon Coast Range, U.S.A.)

  • 오레곤 연안 산맥 남부에 분포하는 에오세 퇴적층들에 대한 탄화수소 근원암 평가가 Rock-eval 열분석을 이용 수행되었다. 오레곤 연안 산맥 남부의 에오세 퇴적층 대부분은 가스성향의 Type III 케로겐들을 소량 포함하고 있으며, 열적으로도 미숙성 되었다. 그러나 탄층을 포함하여 일부 퇴적층은 인접 지역에서 발견되는 유기적 또는 열적으로 생성된 메탄가스징들의 근원암이 될 수 있을 정도로 충분한 유기물들을 포함하고 있다. 오레곤 연안 산맥 남부의 에오세 퇴적층에 대한 탄화수소 근원암 평가는 전반적으로 낮게 평가된다. 그러나 오레곤 연안 산맥 남부 및 인접 지역에 상업적으로 생산될 수 있는 규모의 탄화수소 집적소들이 존재할 가능성이 있으며, 세 종류의 가능성 있는 석유 시스템이 인지된다. 가장 가능성이 높은 석유 시스템은 오레곤 연안 산맥 남부와 중생대 클라매쓰 산맥 북부의 인접 지역에 나타나며, 섭입대 성숙 메카니즘과 관련된 트러스트를 따라 발달하는 석유 시스템이다. 두 번째 가능성 있는 석유 시스템은 오레곤 연안 산맥 북부에 과압력대와 연관되어 발달될 수 있는 분지중심가스의 석유 시스템이며, 세 번째 석유 시스템은 오레곤 연안 산맥 서부에 나타나는 제3기 화산활동과 연계되어 생성된 열수용액들의 이동과 관입암체들에 의한 열적 숙성에 의한 석유 시스템이다.

부산시 공입지역 환경 대기 중 VOCs 특성 및 발생원 규명 (Characteristics and Identification of Ambient VOCs Sources in Busan Industrial Area)

  • 부산광역시에서 운영하고 있는 VOCs 자동측정망에서 실시간 분석되고 있는 데이터를 이용 감전동과 장림동에 대한 환경대기 중의 VOCs 특징 및 발생원을 규명하고자 하였다. 사상구 감전동과 사하구 장림동은 국가 공단 내에 위치하고 있어, 인근 지역에 소재하고 있는 공장의 영향을 많이 받은 것으로 조사되었다. 감전동 지역에 영향을 줄 수 있는 배출원 및 그 배출원의 기여도를 추정하기 위하여 PMF 모델을 수행한 결과 분류된 배출원과 그 기여도는 유기용제(29.83%), 표면 코팅(17.13%), 차량 배기가스(15.22%), 압축기의 윤활유와 세탁시설(13.95%), LPG 차량(15.22%), 난방연소(7.11%) 및 자연적 배출원(6.61%)로 나타났다. 특히 유기용제와 표면코팅이 가장 큰 기여도를 나타내었는데 이는 감전동에 위치한 많은 제조공장과 자동차 정비시설의 영향과 사상구에 위치한 유기용제 및 페인트 제조공장의 영향에 기인한 것으로 판단되어 진다.

밭 토양으로부터 아질산(N2O기체의 배출량 측정과 배출특성 (N2O Emissions from Agricultural Soils and Their Characteristics)

  • A closed chamber system was used for measuring $N_2$0 fluxes from an agriculturally managed upland soil in Kunsan during the growing season from May to July 2002. It is known that soil is one dominant source of atmospheric $N_2$O, contributing to about 57% (9 Tg y $^{-1}$ ) of the total annual global emission. Hence, its increasing emissions and concentrations are largely associated with agricultural activities. In order to elucidate characteristics of soil nitrogen emissions from intensively managed agricultural soils and to understand the roles of soil parameters (soil moisture, soil pH, soil temperature, and soil nitrogen) in the gas emission, $N_2$O soil emissions were measured at every hour during the experimental period (21 days). Soil $N_2$O fluxes were calculated based on changes of $N_2$O concentrations measured inside a closed chamber at every hour. The analysis of $N_2$O was made by using a Gas Chromatography (equipped with Electron Capture Detector). Soil parameters at sampling plots were also analyzed. Monthly averaged $N_2$O fluxes during May, June, and July were 0.14, 0.05, and 0.13 mg-$N_2$O m$^{-2}$ h$^{-1}$ , respectively. Soil temperature and soil pH did not significantly vary over the experimental period; soil temperatures ranged from 12∼$25^{\circ}C$, and soil pH ranged 4.56∼4.75. However, soil moisture varied significantly from 32% to 56% in WFPS. Relationships between soil parameters and $N_2$O fluxes exhibited positive linear relationships. Strong positive correlation ($R^2$ = 0.57, P< 0.0001) was found between $N_2$O flux and sil moisture. It suggests that soil moisture has affected strongly soil $N_2$O emissions during the experimental periods, while other parameters have remained relatively at constant levels. $N_2$O flux from agricultural soils was significant and should be taken account for the national emission inventory.

Major Element Changes in the Upper Quaternary Sediment of the East Sea (Sea of Japan): Their Implications for the Onset of Holocene

  • Two piston cores (94PC-2 and 95PC-4) taken from the East Sea (Sea of Japan) are studied to evaluate the paleoceanographic changes and its interaction with climatic variation. The bulk geochemistry of the non-biogenic fractions of 54 sediment samples is determined using X-ray fluorescence. Four geochemical stratigraphic units at both core sediments are recognized based on the variations in major element concentration. These chemical stratigraphic units correspond well with the sedimentological and paleontological facies. Source materials are considered as basic and/or intermediate rocks judging from silica content. A distinctive boundary around 11 kyr may correspond to Younger Dryas event. The switch of most major elements at this level and the distinctive changes in concentration of typical terrigenous elements (TiO$_2$ and Al$_2$O$_3$) are the strong evidence for the difference in sources of terrigenous materials. The weathering indices exhibit high degree in Core 94PC-2 and low degree in Core 95PC-4. The changes in weathering degree can be distinguished by the lowest value occurred at 11 kyr in Core 94PC-2 and by a gradual decrease from top to bottom in Core 95PC-4. The profiles of potassium and sodium exhibit specific excursions between the Holocene and the late Pleistocene. This implies that sediments of the two cores originating from different sources with different weathering degrees. The distinct two-group distributions in K$_2$O/CaO vs. Na$_2$O/K$_2$O also support the difference in provenance of aluminosilicate materials at the boundary of 11 kyr. Thus, supply patterns of terrigenous materials are stable in Holocene and more complicated in the last glacial period.

바이오매스를 에너지원으로 하는 유기냉매 사이클 스크롤 팽창기 발전 장치 설계 (Design of Scroll Expander for Electric Power Generation System using Organic Rankine Cycle with Biomass Energy Source)

  • A scroll expander has been designed to produce a shaft power from a R134a Rankine cycle for electricity generation. Heat was supplied to the Rankine cycle through a heat exchanger, which received heat from another cycle of water. In the water cycle, water was heated up in a boiler using biogenic solid fuel. The designed scroll expander was a horizontal type, and a trochoidal oil pump was employed for oil supply to bearings and Oldham-ring keys. For axial compliance, a back pressure chamber was created on the backside of the orbiting scroll base plate. Numerical study has been carried out to estimate the performance of the designed scroll expander. The expander was estimated to produce the shaft power of about 2.9 kW from a heat supply of 36 kW, when the temperature of R134a was $80^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ at the evaporator and condenser of the Rankine cycle, respectively. The expander efficiency was about 70.5%. When the amount of heat supply varied in the ranges of 7.5~55 kW, the expander efficiency changed in the range of 45.6~70.5%, showing a peak efficiency of 70.5% at the design shaft speed.

돼지 및 닭에서 분리된 균에 대한 봉독의 최소억제농도(MIC) (The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of bee venom against bacteria isolated from pigs and chickens)

  • Bee venom is synthesized in the venom gland's of worker and queen bees and stored in their venom sacs. Bee venom is a rich source of enzymes, peptides and biogenic amines. there are at least 18 active components in the venom which have some pharmaceutical properties. This study was performed to evaluate minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of bee venom against bacteria isolated from pjgs and chickens with disease. In case of reference strains, the MIC $({\mu}g/m{\ell})$ of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, and Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 6538 were 64, 64 and 32, respectively. In case of bacteria isolated from pig and chicken, the MIC of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hyicus and Staphylococcus chromogenes were 8, 128 and 128, and that of 11 strains of Escherichia coli were 8 to >512 and that of 8 strains of Salmonella sup were >512. Antibacterial resistance test of 22 strains isolated from pig and chicken and 3 reference strains were performed by agar gel diffusion method, using 17 antibacterial drugs including penicillin, cefazolin, tetracycline and quinolone group. The multiple drug resistant patterns were found in most strains isolated from pig and chicken.

진해만 입구해역의 표층 퇴적물 특성과 저서환경 (Surface Sediment Characteristics and Benthic Environments in the Mouth of Jinhae Bay, Korea)

  • Surface sediments in the mouth area of Jinhae Bay were investigated to evaluate the benthic environment in terms of geochemical criteria and macrobenthos abundance. Characteristics of the surface sediment distribution exhibited muddy sediments in the most part of study area. Some mixed sediments of coarse sand and mud were distributed along the coastal area of Geoje Island and around the Jeo Islands. Organic matter from ignition loss and total organic carbon from CHNS varied between $8.8-1.7\%,\;and\;4.62-0.77\%,$ respectively. The source of organic matter based on the C/S ratio was mixed with in situ biogenic and terrigenous organic matter. The C/S ratio of organic matter also suggested both an anoxic bottom condition in several parts of the study area. The content of hydrogen sulfide in surface sediment was extremely variable and showed spatio-temporal variation from site to site. In several locations, the content of hydrogen sulfide as an index of eutrophication was over the critical value (0.2 mg/g), suggesting that several parts of the study area were not favorable for the habitat of macrobenthos. The relationship among the number of individuals of marcrobenthos, hydrogen sulfide, and organic matter was not clear, but a potential negative relationship between individuals of marcrobenthos and hydrogen sulfide was indicated.
