This study deals with the surface fluorination of poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) with the direct contact of 100 ppm fluorine gas. To characterize the surface fluorinated membranes, the contac angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron microscopy analysis and the gas permeation experiments were performed. As the fluorination time increases, the hydrophobicity of membrane surfaces is increased by the surface characterization. In general, as expected, the overall gas permeability was reduced. Typically, the permeability reduction of 33% for nitrogen, 23% for oxygen and 3% for carbon dioxide were observed when the membranes were exposed in 100 ppm environment for 60 min., meanwhile the selectivity was increased from 3.92 to 4.47 for $O_2/N_2$ and 18.09 to 25.4 for $O_2/N_2$, respectively.
Four $Cd^{II}$ MOFs, $[Cd_2({\mu}-succinate)_2(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ (1A), $[Cd_2({\mu}-succinate)_2({\mu}-4,4^{\prime}-bpy)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ (1B), $[\{Cd_2({\mu}-succinate)_2\}({\mu}-bpa)_2\{Cd(H_2O)_2\}(NO_3)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ (2), and $[Cd({\mu}-succinate)({\mu}-bpp)_2]{\cdot}2H_2O$ (3), with various bipyridyl ligands (4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa), and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp)) were prepared, and their structures were determined using X-ray crystallography. The structures and dimensionalities of $Cd^{II}$-(succinate) compounds varied depending on the auxiliary ligands. Heterogeneous catalytic activity for transesterification reactions, photoluminescence and the thermal stabilities of these compounds were also examined.
Pervaporation separation for water-ethanol mixtures has been carried out using crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA_MA) and at which tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was introduced. The concentration of PSSA_MA was fixed 7 wt% over PVA and the TEOS contents, 3, 5, and 7 wt%, were varied against PVA. The composition of the feed mixtures were 10, 20, 30 and 50 wt% of water in it. PVA/PSSA_MA/5 wt% TEOS membrane showed the separation factor, 1730 and the permeability, $16.3g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ for water : ethanol = 10 : 90 at $50^{\circ}C$.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) coating solution containing glutaraldehyde (GA) and maleic anhydride (MA) as crosslinking agents was coated onto hydrolyzed poly acrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fiber membranes. The permselectivities of the resulting composite membranes prepared varying the reaction temperature and the concentration of the crosslinking agents were tested for 90 wt% ethanol aqueous mixtures by the pervaporation technique at $60^{\circ}C$. In general, the flux decreased while the selectivity increased for the increases of the reaction temperature and the crosslinking concentration. In case of GA as a crosslinking, the flux $165g/m^2hr$ and the separation factor 81 were obtained at GA 11 wt% and the reaction temperature $120^{\circ}C$. And for the case of MA, the flux $174g/m^2hr$ and the separation factor 73 were obtained at MA 11 wt% and the reaction temperature $120^{\circ}C$.

The neutral polymer, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), was coated onto polyamide (PA) thin film composite reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. And then these membranes were investigated for the model foulants, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), and sodium alginate (SA) whether there are aome improvement. As the operating pressure increased with 2, 4, 8 atm for BSA, HA and SA 100 ppm in feed solution, the fouling phenomena was worse for both none and PSSA coated membranes. The fouling occurred in the sequence of BSA > HA > SA due to the interactions between PVA snd functional groups of foulants, and on the other hand the fouling reduction was observed in the order of HA > BSA > SA. The observation of scanning electron microscopy photographs showed the same trend. As a result, there should be the improvement of fouling phenomena for the PVA coated RO membranes and the case of HA was shown distinct.
Sulfur-substituted $LiMn_{0.9}Cr_{0.1}O_{2-x}S_x$$(0\;\leq\;x\;\leq\;0.1)$ layered oxides have been prepared by solid state reaction under inert atmosphere. From powder X-ray diffraction analyses, all the present lithium manganates were found to be crystallized with monoclinic-layered structure. Electrochemical measurements clearly demonstrated that, in comparison with the pristine $LiMn_{0.9}Cr_{0.1}O_2$, the sulfur-substituted derivatives exhibit smaller discharge capacities for the entire cycle range but the recovery of discharge capacity after the initial several cycles becomes faster upon sulfur substitution. The effect of the sulfur substitution on the chemical bonding nature of $LiMn_{0.9}Cr_{0.1}O_{2-x}S_x$has been investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) analyses at Mn and Cr K-edges. According to Mn K-edge XAS results, the trivalent oxidation state of manganese ion remains unchanged before and after the substitution whereas the local structure around manganese ions becomes more distorted with increasing the substitution rate of sulfur. On the other hand, the replacement of oxygen with sulfur has negligible influence on the local atomic arrangement around chromium ions, which is surely due to the high octahedral stabilization energy of $Cr^{+III} $ ions. Based on the present experimental findings, we have suggested that the decrease of discharge capacity upon sulfur substitution is ascribable to the enhanced structural distortion of $MnO_6$ octahedra and/or to the formation of covalent Li-S bonds, and the accompanying improvement of cyclability would be related to the depression of Mn migration and/or to the pillaring effect of larger sulfur anion.

In order to increase the permeabilities of $N_2$, $O_2$, $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $SO_2$, Poly (ether block amides) (PEBAX) 3533 and its blended membranes with Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) of molecular weight 400 were prepared. The contents of PEG400 were 20%, 40%, and 50% and this membranes were characterized in terms of permeability for $N_2$, $O_2$, $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $SO_2$ gases and also diffusivity and solubility as well by using the time-lag gas separation apparatus. As expected, the permeabilities incerased as the contents of PEG400 increased. For the ideal selectivity, there is no big difference in values of between PEBAX 3533 and PEBAX/PEG400 membranes. The increase of permeabilities is due to the increases of solubilities of gases in question and this will be explained in more detail.
Biophotonic sensors based on polymer waveguide with Bragg reflection grating are demonstrated in this work. Waveguide Bragg reflectors were designed by using the effective index method and the transmission matrix method. The grating pattern was formed by exposing the laser interference pattern on a photoresist. On top of the inverted rib waveguide, the Bragg reflection grating was inscribed by the O2 plasma etching. In order to perform the bio-molecule detection experiment, a calixarene molecule was self-assembled on top of thin Au film deposited on the waveguide Bragg reflector. To measure the response of the sensor, several PBS solutions with different concentrations of potassium ion from 1 pM to $100\;{\mu}M$ were dropped on the sensor surface. The shift of Bragg reflection wavelength was observed from the fabricated sensor device, which was proportional to the concentration of potassium ion ranging from 1 pM to 108 pM.
The role of nano bio-composites precursor to chitosan are innumerable and are known for having different applications in various branches of physical sciences. The application to the sensor development is relatively new, where only few literature works are available to address the specific and critical analysis of nanocomposites in the subject area. The bio-composites are potential and having greater affinity towards the heavy metals and several micro-pollutants hence, perhaps are having wider implications in the low or even trace level detection of the pollutants. The nano-composites could show good selectivity and suitability for the detection of the pollutants as they are found in the complex matrix. However, the greater challenges are associated using the bio-composites, since the biomaterials are prone to be oxidized or reduced at an applied potential and found to be a hinderance for the detection of target pollutants. In addition, the materials could proceed with a series of electrochemical reactions, which could produce different by-products in analytical applications, resulting in several complex phenomena in electrochemical processes. Therefore, this review addresses critically various aspects of an evaluation of nano bio-composite materials in the electrochemical detection of heavy metals and micro-pollutants from aqueous solutions.

The task of sorting and excluding blemished apples and others that lack commercial appeal is currently performed manually by human eye sorting, which not only causes musculoskeletal disorders in workers but also requires a significant amount of time and labor. In this study, an automated apple-sorting machine was developed to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in apple production workers and to streamline the process of sorting blemished and non-marketable apples from the better quality fruit. The apple-sorting machine is composed of an arm-rest, a main body, and a height-adjustable part, and uses object detection through a machine learning technology called 'You Only Look Once (YOLO)' to sort the apples. The machine was initially trained using apple image data, RoboFlow, and Google Colab, and the resulting images were analyzed using Jetson Nano. An algorithm was developed to link the Jetson Nano outputs and the conveyor belt to classify the analyzed apple images. This apple-sorting machine can immediately sort and exclude apples with surface defects, thereby reducing the time needed to sort the fruit and, accordingly, achieving cuts in labor costs. Furthermore, the apple-sorting machine can produce uniform quality sorting with a high level of accuracy compared with the subjective judgment of manual sorting by eye. This is expected to improve the productivity of apple growing operations and increase profitability.
