Eph receptors and their ligands, ephrins, represent the largest group of the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) family, and they mediate numerous developmental processes in a variety of organisms. Ephrins are membrane-bound proteins that are mainly divided into two classes: A class ephrins, which are linked to the membrane by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) linkage, and B class ephrins, which are transmembrane ligands. Based on their domain structures and affinities for ligand binding, the Eph receptors are also divided into two groups. Trans-dimerization of Eph receptors with their membrane-tethered ligands regulates cell-cell interactions and initiates bidirectional signaling pathways. These pathways are intimately involved in regulating cytoskeleton dynamics, cell migration, and alterations in cellular dynamics and shapes. The EphBs and ephrinBs are specifically localized and modified to promote higher-order clustering and initiate of bidirectional signaling. In this review, we present an in-depth overview of the structure, mechanisms, cell signaling, and functions of EphB/ephrinB in cell adhesion and migration.
In this work, the electrophoretic motion of dsDNA molecule represented by a polymer through an artificial nano-pore in a membrane is simulated using the numerical method combining the lattice Boltzmann and Langevin molecular dynamic method. The polymer motion is represented by Langevin molecular dynamics technique while the fluid flow is taken into account by fluctuating lattice-Boltzmann method. The hydrodynamic interactions between the polymer and solvent in a confined space with a membrane having a hole are considered explicitly through the frictional and the random forces. The electric field intensity over the space is obtained from a finite difference method. Initially, the polymer is placed at one side of the space, and an electric field is applied to drive the polymer to the other side of the space through the nano-pore. In future, we plan to study the effect of the polymer size and the electric field on the electrophoretic velocity.
Osmotic pellet, which consisted of water-swellable seed layer, drug layer, and porous membrane layer, has been widely utilized in oral drug delivery system. In this work, we describe the preparation of osmotic pellet with nifedipine as model drug and a mixture of cellulose acetate (CA) and Eudragit RS as membrane layer, and then examined the drug release behavior on the variation of the thickness change of membrane layer (CA and Eudragit RS) and release media. Furthermore, we examined the nifedipine release behavior using sodium alginate as a potential membrane candidate. Osmotic pellet was obtained in the quantitative yield by fluidized bed coater. Osmotic pellet exhibited the round morphology and the size ranging $1500{\sim}1700{\mu}m$ in SEM. The nifedipine release decreased as the thickness of membrane layer (CA and Eudragit RS) increased. In addition, it observed that there is difference of release amount in between intestinal juice (pH 6.8) and gastric juice (pH 1.2). In the case of osmotic pellet coated with sodium alginate, nifedipine release behavior depended on the crosslinking of sodium alginate layer. In conclusion, we found that various membrane layers could control the release amount of nifedipine.
Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of beta-tricalcium phosphate (Cerasorb$^{(R)}$, Germany) and deproteinized bovine bone (Bio-Oss$^{(R)}$, Switzerland) grafted to the defect of rat calvaria artificially created and the effect of use of absorbable membrane (BioMesh$^{(R)}$, Korea) on new bone formation. Materials and Methods: Transosseous circular calvarial defects with diameters of 5 mm were prepared in the both parietal bone of 30 rats. In the control group I, no specific treatment was done on the defects. In the control group II, the defects were covered with absorbable membrane. In the experimental group I, deproteinized bovine bone was grafted without absorbable membrane; in the experimental group II, deproteinized bovine bone was grafted with absorbable membrane; in the experimental group III, beta-tricalcium phosphate was grafted without absorbable membrane; in the experimental group IV, beta-tricalcium phosphate was grafted with absorbable membrane. The animals were sacrificed after 3 weeks and 6 weeks respectively, and histologic and histomorphometric evaluations were performed. Results: Compare to the control groups, the experimental groups showed more newly formed bone. Between the experimental groups, beta-tricalcium phosphate showed more resorption than deproteinized bovine bone. Stabilization of grafted material and interception of the soft tissue invasion was observed in the specimen treated with membrane. There was no statistical difference between the experimental group I, III and experimental group II, IV classified by graft material, but statistically significant increase in the amount of newly formed bone was observed in the experimental group I, II and II, IV classified by the use of membrane (P<0.05). Conclusion: Both beta-tricalcium phosphate and deproteinized bovine bone showed similar osteoconductibility, but beta-tricalcium phosphate is thought to be closer to ideal synthetic graft material because it showed higher resorption rate in vivo. Increased new bone formation can be expected in bone graft with use of membrane.

The plant-homologue of Bax Inhibitor, a gene described to suppress the cell death induced by Bax gene expression in yeast, was isolated from rice (Oryza sativa L.). Nucleic acid sequence and amino acid sequence were 741 bp and 247 bp, respectively. The amino acid sequence of the predicted protein was well conserved in plant (84 % in amino acids) and contained five membrane-spanning segments.

Pleurocidin, an $\alpha$-helical cationic antimicrobial peptide, was isolated from skin mucosa of winter flounder (Pleuronectes americamus). It had strong antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, but had very weak hemolytic activity. The Gly$^{13,17}\rightarrow$Ala analog (pleurocidin-AA) showed similar antibacterial activities, but had dramatically increased hemolytic activity. The bacterial cell selectivity of pleurocidin was confirmed through the membrane-disrupting and membrane-binding affinities using dye leakage, tryptophan fluorescence blue shift, and tryptophan quenching experiments. However, the non-cell-selective antimicrobial peptide, pleurocidin-AA, interacts strongly with both negatively charged and zwitterionic phospholipid membranes, the latter of which are the major constituents of the outer leaflet of erythrocytes. Circular dihroism spectra showed that pleurocidin-AA has much higher contents of $\alpha$-helical conformation than pleurocidin. The tertiary structure determined by NMR spectroscopy showed that pleurocidin has a flexible. structure between the long helix from $Gly^3$ to $Gly^{17}$ and the short helix from $Gly^{17}$ to $Leu^{25}$. Cell-selective antimicrobial peptide pleurocidin interacts strongly with negatively charged phospholipid membranes, which mimic bacterial membranes. Structural flexibility between the two helices may play a key role in bacterial cell selectivity of pleurocidin.

This study deals with the preparation of polymeric electrolyte membranes having high durability for the application of fuel cells. The membranes under investigation were prepared the impregnation to porous polyethylene membranes with poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA), poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid), and (PSSA-MA)3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propanesulfonic acid (THS-PSA). To characterize the resulting membranes, the water contents, the contact angles, FT-IR, the proton conductivity and the the modulus were measured. The proton conductivity of 30% content of THS-PSA at $55^{\circ}C$ gave excellent $1.27{\times}10^{-1}S/cm$ and the mechanical strength was improved 7 times higher up to the THS-PSA content 15%, as a result, the durability was elevated extensively.
In membrane bioreactor (MBR), activated sludge degrade the biological component and membrane process separate this bacterial flocks as well the suspended solids. However, membrane fouling is one of the major issues in MBR. In this review, composite membrane used in MBR to overcome fouling is discussed. It is classified into membrane containing carbon and noncarbon materials. Introducing graphene, graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes or their modified part into pristine membrane enhance hydrophilicity of the composite membrane. Inorganic materials like silicon dioxide (SiO2) or titanium dioxide (TiO2) are also incorporated for preparing composite membrane to increase its water flux.
The membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) creates a natural partnership of a membrane and biofilm, because a gas-transfer membrane delivers a gaseous substrate to the biofilm that grows on the membrane's outer wall. $O_2$-based MBfRs (called membrane aerated biofilm reactors, or MABRs) have existed for much longer than $H_2$-based MBfRs, but the $O_2$-based MBfR is a versatile platform for reducing oxidized contaminants in many water-treatment settings: drinking water, ground water, wastewater, and agricultural drainage. Extensive bench-scale experimentation has proven that the $H_2$-based MBfR can reduce many oxidized contaminant to harmless or easily removed forms: e.g., ${NO_3}^-$ to $N_2$, ${ClO_4}^-$ to $H_2O$ and $Cl^-$, ${SeO_4}^{2-}$ to $Se^0$, and trichloroethene (TCE) to ethene and $Cl^-$. The MBfR has been tested at the pilot scale for ${NO_3}^-$ and ${ClO_4}^-$ and is now entering field-testing for many of the oxidized contaminants alone or in mixtures. For the MBfR to attain its full promise, several issues must be addressed by bench and field research: understanding interactions with mixtures of oxidized contaminants, treating waters with a high TDS concentration, developing modules that can be used in situ to augment pre-denitrification of wastewater, and keeping the capital costs low.
