  • This paper proposes an efficient method for verifying palmprint which is captured at the natural interface without any physical restriction. The location and orientation of the region of interest (ROI) in palm images are variously appeared due to the translation and rotation of hand. Therefore, it is necessary to extract the ROI stably for palmprint recognition. This paper presents a method that can extract the ROI, which is based on the reference points that are located at the center of the crotch segments between index finger and middle finger and between ring finger and little finger. It also proposes a palmprint recognition method using the histogram of local binary patterns (LBP). Experiments for evaluating the performance of the proposed method were performed on 1,597 palmprint images acquired from 100 different persons. The experimental results showed that ROI was correctly extracted at the rate of 99.5% and the equal error rate (EER) and the decidability index d' indicating the performance of palmprint verification were 0.136 and 3.539, respectively. These results demonstrate that the proposed method is robust to the variations of the translation and rotation of hand.

  • 1. Objectives This study is for discovering the characteristics of the sleep in ordinary symptoms based on the Sasang Constitution. The result of this study could be helpful to understand and to identify the patients as Taeumin by contrast with non-Taeumin. 2. Methods There were 1,229 patients(529 men), who answered the questionnaire about their ordinary sleep patterns. They had been diagnosed, including their Sasang Constitution, by the Sasang Constitution specialist at Bundang Oriental Hospital of Dongguk university. Applying the binary logistic regression analysis to each item about ordinary sleep patterns and the diagnosed Sasang Constitution, we can measure the characteristics and influence of ordinary sleep patterns to the dependent variable(Sasang Constitution). 3. Results As a result of the binary logistic analysis on the observed questionnaire, we found the similar features of the ordinary sleep patterns on Taeumin by contrast with non-Taeumin. In order of influence that identify Taeumin or non-Taeumin, first, Taeumin has a tendency that he will snore well or frequently. Second, Taeumin has a tendency that he will not dream, when he sleeps by contrast with non-Taeumin. 4. Conclusions This study will be used to identify patients as Taeumin or non-Taeumin by means of a reference tool.

  • In this paper, we propose a parallel approximate string matching algorithm with k-mismatches for multiple fixed-length patterns (PMASM) in DNA sequences. PMASM is developed from parallel single pattern approximate string matching algorithms to effectively calculate the Hamming distances for multiple patterns with a fixed-length. In the preprocessing phase of PMASM, all target patterns are binary encoded and stored into a look-up memory. With each input character from the input string, the Hamming distances between a substring and all patterns can be updated at the same time based on the binary encoding information in the look-up memory. Moreover, PMASM adopts graphics processing units (GPUs) to process the data computations in parallel. This paper presents three kinds of PMASM implementation methods in GPUs: thread PMASM, block-thread PMASM, and shared-mem PMASM methods. The shared-mem PMASM method gives an example to effectively make use of the GPU parallel capacity. Moreover, it also exploits special features of the CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) memory structure to optimize the performance. In the experiments with DNA sequences, the proposed PMASM on GPU is 385, 77, and 64 times faster than the traditional naive algorithm, the shift-add algorithm and the single thread PMASM implementation on CPU. With the same NVIDIA GPU model, the performance of the proposed approach is enhanced up to 44% and 21%, compared with the naive, and the shift-add algorithms.

  • In longitudinal studies, outcomes are repeatedly measured over time for each subject. It is common to have missing values or dropouts for longitudinal data. In this study time trend in longitudinal data with dropouts is of concern. The confounding of time trend with dropout process is investigated through simulation studies. Some simulation results are reported for binary responses as well as continuous responses with patterns of dropouts varying. It has been found that time trend is not confounded with random dropout process for binary responses when it is estimated using GEE.

  • The Kepler mission of NASA has enabled to discover a lot of new W UMa-type binaries with continuous light curves measured with unprecedented accuracy. Interestingly, their eclipsing time variation (hereafter ETV) diagrams show anti-correlation between primary and secondary minima, presumably occurred by continuous spot variation (Tran et al. 2013; Balaji et al. 2014). Two active Kepler binaries (KIC06118779 & KIC08682849), reported as showing the anti-correlation in ETV diagram, were investigated to see that the anti-correlations are correlated with time-variable O'connell effects appeared in their light curves. As a result, it was found that the O'connell effects for two binary stars have varied in quasi-sinusoidal ways similar to the patterns of their anti-correlation variations. In addition, our light curve syntheses of two binary stars with the latest version of the Wilson-Devinney code (Wilson & devinney 1971) show that they are very deep-contact binary system with extremely low mass ratios.

  • We propose a design scheme of a binary decision tree and apply it to the tire tread pattern recognition problem. In this scheme, a binary decision tree is constructed by using fuzzy C-means( FCM ) algorithm. All the available features are used while clustering. At each node, the best feature or feature subset among these available features is selected based on proposed similarity measure. The decision tree can be used for the classification of unknown patterns. The proposed design scheme is applied to the tire tread pattern recognition problem. The design procedure including feature extraction is described. Experimental results are given to show the usefulness of this scheme.

  • The combination texture feature extraction approach for texture image retrieval is proposed in this paper. Two kinds of low level texture features were combined in the approach. One of them was extracted from singular value decomposition (SVD) based dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT) coefficients, and the other one was extracted from multi-scale local binary patterns (LBPs). The fusion features of SVD based multi-directional wavelet features and multi-scale LBP features have short dimensions of feature vector. The comparing experiments are conducted on Brodatz and Vistex datasets. According to the experimental results, the proposed method has a relatively better performance in aspect of retrieval accuracy and time complexity upon the existing methods.

  • Local Binary Pattern (LBP) is becoming a popular tool for various machine vision applications such as face recognition, classification and background subtraction. In this paper, we propose a new extension of LBP, called the Diagonal LBP (DLBP), to handle the image-based gender classification problem arise in interactive display systems. Instead of comparing neighbor pixels with the center pixel, DLBP generates codes by comparing a neighbor pixel with the diagonal pixel (the neighbor pixel in the opposite side). It can reduce by half the code length of LBP and consequently, can improve the computation complexity. The Support Vector Machine is utilized as the gender classifier, and the texture profile based on DLBP is adopted as the feature vector. Experimental results revealed that our approach based on the diagonal LPB is very efficient and can be utilized in various real-time pattern classification applications.

  • In this paper, multiplhase only filter(MPOFs) are designed using simulated annealing algorithm. These filters have excellent recognition characteristics for similar patterns or rotated patterns and enhance optical efficiency as well as spatial-bandwidth product by deleting mirror image. As the result of computer simulation to certify recogntion characteristics of similar patterns, simulated annealing-MPOF(SA-MPOF) has superior discrimination and higher correlation peak values than cosine binary phase only filters(CBPOF) and simpulated annealing-BPOF (SA-BPOF). THe filter having training process for rotated patterns of arbitraty possible angle can overcome that phase only filter(POF) and CBPOF can't recognize rotated input patterns.

  • Laboratories and industrial processes typically involve the use of flammable substances. An important property used to estimate fire and explosion risk for a flammable liquid is the flash point. In this study, flash point data at 101.3 kPa were determined using a SETA closed cup flash point tester on the following solvent mixtures: {2,2,4-trimethylpentane + methylcyclohexane}, {2,2,4-trimethylpentane + ethylbenzene}, and {2,2,4-trimethylpentane + p-xylene}. The purpose of this work is to obtain flash point data for binary mixtures of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane with three hydrocarbons (methylcyclohexane, ethylbenzene, and p-xylene), which are representative compounds of the main aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of petroleum. The measured flash points are compared with the predicted values calculated using the GE models' activity coefficient patterns: the Wilson, the Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL), and the UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC) models. The non-ideality of the mixture is also considered. The average absolute deviation between the predicted and measured lower flash point s is less than 1.99 K, except when Raoult's law is calculated. In addition, the minimum flash point behavior is not observed in any of the three binary systems. This work's predicted results can be applied to design safe petrochemical processes, such as identifying safe storage conditions for non-ideal solutions containing volatile components.
