Control and Analysis of an Integrated Bidirectional DC/AC and DC/DC Converters for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Applications

  • The plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are specialized hybrid electric vehicles that have the potential to obtain enough energy for average daily commuting from batteries. The PHEV battery would be recharged from the power grid at home or at work and would thus allow for a reduction in the overall fuel consumption. This paper proposes an integrated power electronics interface for PHEVs, which consists of a novel Eight-Switch Inverter (ESI) and an interleaved DC/DC converter, in order to reduce the cost, the mass and the size of the power electronics unit (PEU) with high performance at any operating mode. In the proposed configuration, a novel Eight-Switch Inverter (ESI) is able to function as a bidirectional single-phase AC/DC battery charger/ vehicle to grid (V2G) and to transfer electrical energy between the DC-link (connected to the battery) and the electric traction system as DC/AC inverter. In addition, a bidirectional-interleaved DC/DC converter with dual-loop controller is proposed for interfacing the ESI to a low-voltage battery pack in order to minimize the ripple of the battery current and to improve the efficiency of the DC system with lower inductor size. To validate the performance of the proposed configuration, the indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to optimize the efficiency of the AC drive system in PHEVs. The maximum efficiency of the motor is obtained by the evaluation of optimal rotor flux at any operating point, where the PSO is applied to evaluate the optimal flux. Moreover, an improved AC/DC controller based Proportional-Resonant Control (PRC) is proposed in order to reduce the THD of the input current in charger/V2G modes. The proposed configuration is analyzed and its performance is validated using simulated results obtained in MATLAB/ SIMULINK. Furthermore, it is experimentally validated with results obtained from the prototypes that have been developed and built in the laboratory based on TMS320F2808 DSP.

  • Recently, Switching devices become cheaper, depending on the multi-level inverters are considered as the power-conversion systems for high-power and power-quality demanding applications. The multi-level inverters can reduce the THD(Total Harmonic Distortion) as the output which is similar sinusoidal waveform by synthesizing several capacitor DC voltages. However it has some disadvantages such as increased number of components, complex PWM control method. Therefore, this paper is proposed the new multi-level inverter topology using an new H-bridge output stage with a bidirectional auxiliary switch. The proposed topology is the 4-level 3-phase PWM inverter with less switching part than conventional multi-level inverters and reactive power control possible. In order to understand the new multi-level inverter, topology analysis and switching patterns and modes according to the current loop are described in this paper. The proposed multi-level inverter topology is validated through PSIM simulation and the experimental results are provided from a prototype.

  • 최근에 들어 마이크로 컴퓨터를 비롯하여 사무 자동화 및 가정 자동화와 관련한 전자기기에 쓰이는 1KVA이하의 소용량 UPS의 수요가 급격히 증가하고 있다. 이와같은 UPS의 응용에서는 UPS의 소형화와 가격 절감이 가장 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 새로운 방식의 직렬 공진형 인버어터와 그의 제어 방법을 제안하였다. 제안한 인버어터는 영전류 스윗칭 방식의 공진형 컨버어터와 고주파 절연 변압기 및 영전류 스윗칭 방식의 싸이클로 콘버어터로 구성되었다. 공진 전류의 평균 크기를 정현적으로 변화시키고 싸이클로 콘버어터를 이용하여 저주파 출력 전압을 발생시킨다. 제안한 인버어터에서는 양방향 전력 전달이 가능하고 절연 변압기의 크기를 대폭 줄이고 가격도 줄일 수 있다. 제안한 제어방법을 simulation과 실험을 통하여 확인하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 기존의 12-스텝 인버터에 간단한 보조회로를 추가하여 24-스텝(또는 36-스텝)의 출력파형을 갖는 새로운 방식의 이중접속 멀티스텝 인버터를 제안한다. 제안한 인버터의 보조회로는 두 개의 전압분할용 커패시터, 두 개의 스위칭소자와 저용량의 단권변압기로 구성된다. 이 보조회로의 동작으로 24-스텝의 입·출력 파형을 얻을 수 있으며 한 개의 양방향 스위칭 소자를 추가하면 36-스텝의 파형을 얻게된다. 스위칭 함수를 이용한 전압 및 전류의 분석을 통하여 설계에 필요한 최적의 파라미터를 설정하였다. 제안한 인버터는 PWM방식을 사용할 수 없는 중용량의 SVC등에 적용하면 효과적이다. 본 방식의 타당성을 실험 및 시뮬레이션을 통하여 입증하였다.

  • Power can be generated from either renewable or non-renewable sources. Renewable sources are liked to maintain a strategic distance from contamination emanation and rely on upon fossil energizes which is decreasing day by day. The proposed sun powered vitality transformation unit comprises of a sun oriented exhibit, Bidirectional DC-DC converter, single stage inverter and AC. The inverter changes over DC control from the PV board into AC power and offered it to the heap which is associated with the lattice. The photovoltaic sun powered vitality (PV) is the most direct approach to change over sunlight based radiation into power and depends on the photovoltaic impact. The most extreme power point following of the PV yield for all daylight conditions is a key to keep the yield control per unit cost low for fruitful PV applications. 고장나무를 이용한 양방향 컨버터의 신뢰성 분석 (Fault-tree based reliability analysis for bidirectional converter)

  • 본 논문에서는 양방향 dc-to-dc 컨버터의 고장원인, 고장영향, 고장 결과를 파악하기 위한 failure mode and effect analysis(FMEA)와 양방향 컨버터의 위험도를 고려한 fault-tree analysis(FTA)를 통해 고장률을 예측한다. 전기차의 구동전압을 효율적으로 상승시키기 위해 인버터 앞단에 부착되는 양방향 컨버터는 배터리 전력을 dc-link 커패시터로 방전시키는 승압모드와 회생전력을 배터리로 충전시키는 강압모드를 가진다. 양방향 컨버터의 동작 특성을 고려한 FMEA 결과를 바탕으로 컨버터의 위험도를 고려한 고장나무를 설계한다. 전기차 MCU용에 맞는 설계 파라메타를 설정하고 출력전압 리플과 인덕터 전류 리플에 따른 커패시터와 인덕터의 부품 고장률을 분석한다. 또한 동작 온도에 따른 주요부품의 고장률을 MIL-HDBK-217F를 이용하여 구한다. 마지막으로 부품 고장률을 고장나무의 기본 사상의 고장률로 반영하여 컨버터 고장률과 평균고장시간을 예측한다.

A Bidirectional Single-Stage DC/AC Converter for Grid Connected Energy Storage Systems

  • In this paper, a unified control strategy using the current space vector modulation (CSVM) technique is proposed and applied to a bidirectional three-phase DC/AC converter. The operation of the converter changes with the direction of the power flow. In the charging mode, it works as a buck type rectifier; and during the discharging mode, it operates as a boost type inverter, which makes it suitable as an interface between high voltage AC grids and low voltage energy storage devices. This topology has the following advantages: high conversion efficiency, high power factor at the grid side, tight control of the charging current and fast transition between the charging and discharging modes. The operating principle of the mode analysis, the gate signal generation, the general control strategy and the transition from a constant current (CC) to a constant voltage (CV) in the charging mode are discussed. The proposed control strategy has been validated by simulations and experimental results obtained with a 1kW laboratory prototype using supercapacitors as an energy storage device.

  • This study proposes a small-signal model and control design for a two-stage DC-DC-AC converter to investigate its dynamic characteristics in relation to battery energy storage system. When the circuit analysis of the two-stage DC-DC-AC converter is attempted simultaneously, the mathematical procedure of deriving the dynamic equation is complex and difficult. The main idea of modeling the two-stage DC-DC-AC converter states that this topology is separated into a bidirectional DC-DC converter and a single-phase inverter with an equivalent current source corresponding to that of the inverter or converter. The dynamic equations for the separated converter and inverter are then derived using the state-space averaging technique. The procedures of building the small-signal model of the two-stage DC-DC-AC converter are described in detail. Based on the derived small-signal model, the individual controllers are designed through a frequency-domain analysis. The simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed modeling approach and controller design.

Design of a hybrid power management system and cold start simulation in a fuel cell ship with PLECS

  • Currently, many studies on green ships are under way. Fuel cell (FC) ships are of interest as future low-emission, fuel-efficient vessels. In this paper, a hybrid power management system for an FC ship was designed. The system consists of an FC, a battery, a unidirectional DC/DC converter, a bidirectional DC/DC converter, a filter, an inverter, and a propulsion component. To design the system, we analyze electric sources and converters, and create PLECS models of hybrid power management system. Then, we check the cold start sequence and perform a simulation to understand the characteristics of the hybrid power management system in an FC ship.

  • This paper presents a new hybrid multilevel converter topology, which consists of a combination of the series connected switched capacitor units with boost ability, and an H-bridge with T-type bidirectional switches. The proposed converter boosts the input voltage without any bulky inductors, and has the small number of components, which can make the size and cost of a power converter greatly reduced. The output filter size and harmonics are also reduced by the high quality multilevel output. In addition, there is no need for complicated methods to balance the capacitor voltage. Simulation and experimental results with a nine-level converter system are presented to validate the proposed topology and modulation method.
