가상현실 자전거 시뮬레이터에서 시각화 네트워크 (Networked Visualization for a Virtual Bicycle Simulator)

  • This paper presents the visualization method of the KAIST interactive bicycle simulator. The simulator consists of two bicycles of 6 DOF and 4 DOF platforms, force feedback handlebars and pedal resistance systems to generate motion feelings; a real-time visual simulator, a HMD and a beam projection system; and a 3D sound system. The system has an integrating control network with the server-client network structure for multiple simulators. The visual simulator generates dynamic images in real-time while communicating with other modules of the simulator. The operator of the simulator can have realistic visual experience of riding on a velodrome or through the KAIST campus, while being able to watch the other bicycle with an avatar.

  • The interactive bicycle simulator presented in this paper consists of a Stewart platform manipulator, magneto-rheological steering and braking devices, and a visual simulator. To provide a rider with reality, these devices should be controlled in real-time and motions of the devices and the visual should be also synchronized. If any of the devices and the visual gets unsynchronized due to significant blocking of control signals, the reality of the simulator is no longer secured. This paper presents communication protocols that minimize the blocked time of the control processes to guarantee the synchronization. The protocols are designed based on IPC (InterProcess Communications) of QNX, TCP/IP, and serial communication. The performance of the designed communication protocols is evaluated with the implemented bicycle simulator, and found satisfactory.

  • This paper presents the key idea of handlebar reaction force and pedal resistance force generation in creating life-like feeling in KAIST bicycle simulator. Also, it provides methods to evaluate its reality level with given reaction force profile. In KAIST bicycle simulator, the pedal resistance force and the handlebar reaction force are calculated using the bicycle dynamic model. With the information handlebar angle, rider´s pedaling torque and road profile transmitted from the handlebar system, the pedal system and the visual part, the bicycle dynamics engine calculates the handlebar reaction force and the pedal velocity.   • In development of an advanced bicycle simulator, the investigation of the interactions between bicycle and rider during cycling is paramount important because bicycle is a two-wheeled human-powered vehicle. Tn this work, the tilt stability. among various interactions, of bicycling is investigated experimentally, In the experiments, the tilt angles of the bicycle, riders body and head are measured, as the riding p;1th and the speed are varied. Subjects are asked to ride along four typical paths on rigid flat ground : the straight, C-curved, S-curved and circle paths. The results from extensive experiments with different subjects can be summarized as : 1) The tilt angles of bicycle and rider are almost out of phase during pedaling along the straight path. 2) The bicycle tilt angle is nearly proportional to the square of bicycle speed for the straight and curved paths, and to the curvature for the curved paths. The head tilt angle is the biggest and the body tilt angle is the smallest for the straight path, but the tendency is reversed for the C-curved path. During the curve maneuvering, the rider's head tends to tilt by less than 40% of the bicycle tilt angle.

  • A four degrees of freedom (dof) motion platform for bicycle simulator is developed. The motion platform, capable of the vertical linear and three angular motions, is designed based on analysis of the typical motion characteristics revealed by the existing six dof bicycle simulator. The platform essentially consists of two parts: the three dof parallel manipulator, consisting of a moving platform, a fixed base and three actuators, and the turntable to generate the yaw motion. The nonlinear kinematics and dynamics of the three dof parallel manipulator with multiple closed loop chains are analyzed for tracking control of the motion platform. The tracking performances of the three control schemes are experimentally compared: the computed torque method (CTM), the sliding mode control (SMC) and the PD control. The CTM and SMC, incorporated with the system dynamics model, are found to be equally better in performance than the PD controller, irrespective of the presence of external disturbance.

  • One of the challenging problems with bicycle simulators is to deal with the inherent unstable bicycle dynamics that is coupled with rider's motion. For the bicycle dynamics calculation and the real time simulation, it is necessary to identify the control inputs from the rider as well as the virtual environments. The six control forces of the Stewart platform-based motion system are used for estimation of the rider's action force, which is one of the important control inputs, but of which the direct measurement is impractical. For the effective estimation of the rider's action force, the dynamics model of the motion system is derived incorporated with both analytical and experimental methods and the sliding mode controller with perturbation estimation is developed.

  • This paper describes the quantitative analysis on the improvement of equilibrium sensory using virtual bicycle system. We have used a virtual bicycle system that combines virtual reality technology with a bicycle. In this experiment, 10 subjects were tested to investigate the influencing factors on equilibrium sensory. Straight road and curved road driving at several factors including cycling time, number of times of path deviation, and center of pressure(COP) were extracted and evaluated to quantify the extent of control. Also, To improve the effect of balance training, we investigated the usefulness of virtual feedback information by weight shift. The result showed that the system could be effective for equilibrium sensory rehabilitation training device. The analysis method might also have wider applicability to the rehabilitation field.

  • 자전거 운전은 본질적인 불안정한 시스템으로 자전거의 안전한 운전을 위해서는 지속적인 운전자의 상호작용으로 인하여 자전거의 안전성을 확보할 수 있다. 그것은 자전거의 운전이 운전자의 운동과 매우 밀접한 연관이 있다는 것을 알 수 있으며, 현재 자전거의 특성뿐 아니라 운전자의 운전에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있지만 정확한 자전거의 주행 안정성에 대하여 연구는 계속적으로 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 자전거 운전자의 몸무게와 신장과 같은 사람의 인체 정보를 이용하여 적절한 안장 높이와 자전거 바퀴 사이의 거리 및 핸들의 높이를 조절할 수 있는 맞춤형 자전거 관리 시스템을 제시하고자 한다. 또한, 운전자 맞춤형 자전거의 설계는 실제 자전거 운전데이터와 영상데이터를 이용하여 적합한 자전거 모델을 제시하고 추출된 데이터를 통하여 분석된 결과를 제시하고자 한다.

  • In the virtual environment, reality can be enhanced by offering the motion based on a motion simulator in harmony with visual and auditory modalities. In this research, the Stewart platform based motion simulator has been developed. This motion simulator is driven by the electric motors, and offers the slightly wider workspace compared to the commercial available simulators. In order to compensate for the limited range of the motion platform, the washout filters with fixed coefficients have been usually adopted. In this paper the new approach is proposed to tune the filter coefficients based on the fuzzy logic on the real-time basis. It is shown that performance with the variable filter coefficients is better than that with the fixed ones. The driving simulator based on the bicycle dynamics was developed by integrating the motion simulator and graphic system.

Washout Algorithm with Fuzzy-Based Tuning for a Motion Simulator

  • In the virtual environment, reality can be enhanced by offering the motion based on a motion simulator in harmony with visual and auditory modalities. In this research the Stewart-Gough-platform-based motion simulator has been developed. Implementation of vehicle dynamics is necessary in the motion simulator for realistic sense of motion, so bicycle dynamics is adopted in this research. In order to compensate for the limited range of the motion simulator compared with the real vehicle motion, washout algorithm composed of high-pass filter, low-pass filter and tilt coordination is usually employed. Generally, the washout algorithm is used with fixed parameters. In this research a new approach is proposed to tune the filter parameters based on fuzzy logic in real-time. The cutoff frequencies of the filters are adjusted according to the workspace margins and driving conditions. It is shown that the washout filter with the fuzzy-based parameters presents better performance than that with the fixed ones.
