Phase Equilibria for the Formation of Superconducting Phases in the Bi-Sr-Ca-O System (Bi-Sr-Ca-O계에서 초전도상의 형성에 관한 상평형)

  • Phase equilibria and reaction paths of the superconducting phases and other compatible phases at $850^{\circ}C$ in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system were studied. $Bi_2O_3$ was added to $Sr_2CaCu_2O_x$ by 5% up to 40 mole% Bi in the pseudo-binary $Bi_2O_3-(Sr_2CaCu_2O_x)$ system and the heat treated samples were analysed using XRD. SEM, EDS. and DT A. When Bi contents were greater than 35 mole% Bi, liquid phase was formed which was compatible with $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8$ phase. The m.p. of $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8$ phase decreased as the content of (Sr+Ca)decreased. $Bi_{2+x}Sr_2CaCu_2O_8$ phase first segregated out of liquid phase around $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8$ phase during cooling of liquid phase.

Influence of Bismuth and Antimony Additions on the Structures and Casting Properties of Lead-free Cu-Zn-Sn Bronze Castings (무연 Cu-Zn-Sn 청동의 조직과 주조성에 미치는 Bi 및 Sb 첨가의 영향)

  • The effects of Bi and Sb additions on the microstructures and casting properties in lead-free Cu-Zn-Sn broze were investigated. (1) When only Bi was added to the bronze, Bi was precipitated on the ${\delta}$ phase of ${\alpha}$ dendrite cell boundary. When Bi and Sb were added together, Bi was precipitated on the ${\delta}_A$ which was the Sb-rich area in the ${\delta}$ phase. (2) The addition of Sb accelerated the formation of ${\delta}$ phase, and when Sb, Bi and Pb were added, Bi and Pb were precipitated as mixed solution in the ${\delta}_A$ phase. (3) The combined addition of Sb and Bi resulted in the suppression of shrinkage due to the complementary effects of the mass feeding of ${\alpha}$-dendrite cluster covered with ${\delta}$ phase and sealing of micro-shrinkage in the ${\delta}$ phase by solidification expansion of Bi.

Controlling the initial conditions of precursor powders and its effects on the phase evolution and $J_c$ properties of Bi-2223/Ag tapes

  • By varying fabricating process, precursor powders with different initial conditions were prepared. Subsequently, Bi-2223/Ag tapes were made through these powders. The effects of precursor powders on the phase evolution and Jr properties of Bi-2223/Ag tapes were studied along with several thermomechanical cycles. Our results showed that the initial conditions of precursor powders could strongly influence the phase formation rate and $J_{c}$ value in final tapes. The factors of precursor powders that influence the phase formation and $J_{c}$ of Bi-2223/Ag tapes must be studied and optimized in combination.ion.

  • To improve free-cutting property, fine Pb, Bi particles is necessary to be distributed evenly in Al-Cu alloy. The control of added element size and distribution are very difficult because of the physical properties of Pb, Bi. The effect of master alloy compositions on microstructure and particle distribution was investigated. The ribbon shape of Pb-50wt% Bi master alloy showed the best results. And Ti addition improved even distribution of Pb, Bi particles. Particles grown from $L_2$ phase were considered to be the Pb, Bi compound.

  • The luminescence behaviors of Yttrium niobate and Bi doped Yttrium niobate were investigated under UV and low voltage electron excitations and interpreted with the first-principle calculations. In the UV excitation and emission spectra of $YNbO_4$ and $YNbO_4:Bi$, we were able to separate host contribution and Bi contribution and found that the shift in emission peak to longer wavelength is mainly due to Bi contribution. Using density functional theory, the cluster calculations were carried out for both $YNbO_4$ and $YNbO_4:Bi$. From the calculated density of states, we were also able to explain the charge transfer gap in the host and the effect of Bi in the excitation and emission spectra theoretically.

  • A solid state chemical approach to discover new mateials with enhanced thermoelectric properties is described. The aim is to construct three-dimensional bismuth chalcogenide framework structures which contain tonically interacting alkali or alkaline earth atoms. The alkali atoms tend to have soft "rattling" type phonon modes which result in very low thermal conductivity in these materials. Another desirable feature in this class of compounds is the low crystal symmetry and narrow band-gaps. Several promising materials such as BaBiTe3, KBi6.33S10, K2Bi8S13, β-K2Bi8Se13, K2.5Bi8.5Se14, Ba4Bi6Se13, Eu2Pb2Bi6Se13, Al1+xPb4-2xSb7+xSe15 (A=K, Rb), and CsBi4Te6 are described.

  • Recently, many lead-free piezoelectric materials have been investigated for the replacement of existing Pb-based piezoelectric ceramics because of globally increasing environmental interest. There has been remarkable improvement in piezoelectric properties of some lead-free ceramics such as $(Bi,Na)TiO_3-(Bi,K)TiO_3-BaTiO_3$, $(Na,K)NbO_3-LiSbO_3$, and so on. However, no one still has comparable piezoelectric properties to lead-based materials. Therefore, new lead-free piezoelectric ceramics are required. $BiFeO_3$ has a rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure at room temperature and a very high Curie temperature ($T_C$= 1,100 K). And a very large electric polarization of 50 ~ 60 ${\mu}C/cm^2$ has been reported both in epitaxial thin film and single crystal $BiFeO_3$. Therefore, a high piezoelectric effect is expected also in a $BiFeO_3$ ceramics. The recent research activities on $BiFeO_3$ or $BiFeO_3$-based solid solutions are reviewed in this article.

Fabrication and Characterization of Thermoelectric Thick Film by Using Bi-Te-Sb Powders

  • Thermoelectric thick film was fabricated by screen printing process with using p-type Bi-Te-Sb powders. The powder was synthesized by melting, milling and sintering process and hydrogen reduced to enhance the thermoelectric property. The thick film of Bi-Te-Sb powder was fabricated by screen printing method and baked at the optimized conditions. The thermal conductivity, the electrical resistivity and Seeback coefficient of thick film were measured and the thermoelectric performance was analyzed in terms of film characteristics and its microstructure. Finally, the feasibility of thermoelectric thick film into micro cooling device on CPU chip was discussed in this study.
