  • We present a parallel bi-conjugate gradient (Bi-CG) matrix solver for large scale Bio-FET simulations based on recent graphics processing units (GPUs) which can realize a large-scale parallel processing with very low cost. The proposed method is focused on solving the Poisson equation in a parallel way, which requires massive computational resources in not only semiconductor simulation, but also other various fields including computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer simulations. As a result, our solver is around 30 times faster than those with traditional methods based on single core CPU systems in solving the Possion equation in a 3D FDM (Finite Difference Method) scheme. The proposed method is implemented and tested based on NVIDIA's CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) environment which enables general purpose parallel processing in GPUs. Unlike other similar GPU-based approaches which apply usually 32-bit single-precision floating point arithmetics, we use 64-bit double-precision operations for better convergence. Applications on the CUDA platform are rather easy to implement but very hard to get optimized performances. In this regard, we also discuss the optimization strategy of the proposed method.

  • In this article, combination of the FAS-FMG multi-grid method and the Krylov subspace method was presented in solving two dimensional driven-cavity flows. Three algorithms of the Krylov subspace method, CG, CGSTAB(Bi-CG Stabilized) and GMRES method were tested with MILU preconditioner. As a smoother of the pressure correction equation, the MILU-CG is recommended rather than MILU-GMRES(k) or MILU-CGSTAB, since the MILU-GMRES(k) preconditioner has too much computation on the coarse grid compared to the MILU-CG one. As for the momentum equation, relatively cheap smoother like SIP solver may be sufficient.

  • EagBI is a type II restriction endonuclease from Enterobacter agglomerans strain CBNU45 isolated from soil. EagBI was partially purified by DEAE-cellulose, phosphocellulose P11 and hydroxylapatite column chromatography. EagBI recognizes and cleaves the sequence 5'-CGAT${\downarrow}$CG-3' and generates 2-base 3'-protruding cohesive ends. The optimal reaction conditions of EagBI are 10 mM Tris-HCl (pH 7.8), 6-10 mM $MgCl_2$, at 37 ${\circ}C$. The enzyme is maximally active in the absence of NaCl, able to cleave both $dam^-$ and $dam^+$ DNAs, and sensitive to heat treatment (at 65 ${\circ}C$ for 10 min). Therefore, although EagBI is an isoschizomer of PvuI, it is more useful than PvuI in respect of the NaCl requirement and heat-stability.

  • Objectives : The antidepressant effect of the subchronic administration of the methanolic extract of wild ginseng(WG) was investigated compared with that of cultivated ginseng(CG, panax ginseng) extract. Methods : To assess the antidepressant effect of the ginseng extracts, tail suspension test(TST) was executed in mice after daily administration of WG or CG extract for five consecutive days. Results : The WG extract at daily dose of 600mg/kg significantly reduced the total duration of immobility in the TST, whereas there was no significant reduction at daily dose of 300mg/kg WG and 600mg/kg CG. There were no individual differences between experimental groups in open field test (OFT) to evaluate psychostimulant effects of WG or CG extract. In the high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) analysis of the extracts, it was found that WG included four times more ginsenoside Rg1 and Re, three times more Rf, and six times more Rb1 and Rc than CG. Conclusions : It is suggested that WG extract has stronger antidepressant effect than CG extract, which means it includes more antidepressant compounds than CG.

  • Phytophthora diseases have become a major impediment in the citrus production in Thailand. In this study, an isolate of Phytophthora denominated as PHY02 was proven to be causal pathogen of root rot of Pomelo (Citrus maxima) in Thailand. The isolate PHY02 was morphologically characterized and identified as Phytophthora palmivora based on molecular analysis of an internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence. This work also presents in vitro evaluations of the capacities of Chaetomium spp. to control the P. palmivora PHY02. As antagonists, Chaetomium globosum CG05, Chaetomium cupreum CC3003, Chaetomium lucknowense CL01 inhibited 50~61% mycelial growth, degraded mycelia and reduced 92~99% sporangial production of P. palmivora PHY02 in bi-culture test after 30 days. Fungal metabolites from Chaetomium spp. were tested against PHY02. Results showed that, methanol extract of C. globosum CG05 expressed strongest inhibitory effects on mycelial growth and sporangium formation of P. palmivora PHY02 with effective dose ED50 values of $26.5{\mu}g/mL$ and $2.3{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. It is interesting that C. lucknowense is reported for the first time as an effective antagonist against a species of Phytophthora.
