  • As one of the chemical powder fabrication methods, the powder preparation method by using oxalate has the following advantages; (1) easy to control the chemical stoichiometry, (2) easy to fabricate homogeneous and fine particles, and (3) easy to be thermaly decomposed at low temperature. In the present study, the initial morphology and size distribution of the powder were controlled and the homogeniaty was improved. By carefully controlling the pH with NH4OH, the Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconducting powders were prepared and investigated for their properties. The microstructures and the superconducting properties of the pelletized samples were investigated. Also, the microstructures and electrical properties of the samples prepared by tape casting method were investigated. The fabricated powders were spherical with less than 400 nm, but most of them were agglomerated to be 1~3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. The critical temperature of the pelletized sample annealed at 84$0^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours in air was 110K. And the critical currents of annealed samples in air prepared by tape casting process for 24 hours and 72 hours were 0.6 A (Jc=600A/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and 1.9A (Jc=1, 900A/$\textrm{cm}^2$) respectively.

  • The at loss is an important issue in the design of superconducting cables and transformers. In these devices the Bi-2222 tapes are usually placed face-to-face. In such arrangements ac loss is influenced by adjacent tapes. The effect is investigated by measuring the magnetization loss in the stacked conductor, which consists of various numbers of Bi-2223 tapes. For the single tape the magnetization loss in perpendicular field is larger than that in parallel field by about a factor 10. This agrees well with the prediction for hysteresis loss in slab and strip models. For the stacked conductor in perpendicular field the magnetization loss at low fields is greatly decreased, compared to the loss of the single tape. However the loss at high fields is nearly unaffected. This behavior is well described by the slab model.

  • Stability of a Bi-2223/Ag tape was studied by using a numerical model considering the temperature distribution of cross-sectional area. The dynamic evolution of normal zone of a HTS tape can be shown by the developed two-dimensional Program using finite difference method. Two kinds of analyses are compared to quantify the critical disturbance energy for quenching HTS tapes. One is the length-thickness(x-r) side and the other is the length-width(x-z) side. For each case. the governing energy balance equations and corresponding boundary conditions are formulated. The results of analyses shows that the critical disturbance energies for each cases seem to be very close for considered Bi-2223/Ag tape .

  • We jointed Bi(Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O multifilament tapes and evaluated their electrical and mechanical properties. In order to improve connectivity of multifilaments, one or two single-filament tape was inserted between two multifilament tapes. The critical current ratio(CCR) and n-value of the jointed tapes were evaluated as a function of uniaxial pressure. It was observed that critical current ratio and n-value were 24.8-29.0% and 2.5-2.8 for MM lap-jointed tape. On the other hand, the corresponding values were improved to 24.7-53.9% and 3.1-4.2 for MSM jointed tape, and 63.4-76.0% and 3.4-5.1 for double MS:vr lap-jointed tape, respectively. The highest electrical properties of double MSM lap-jointed tape are considered to be owing to the presence of single core, causing better interconnections of multifilaments between the two tapes. The mechanical property of jointed tape was evaluated and correlated to the microstructural evolution. The strength of jointed tapes was 44-64% less than that of the unjoined tape. The strain tolerance of jointed tape was also reduced compared to that of the unjoined tape. These lower mechanical properties of jointed tape are probably due to the induced nonuniform microstructure such as the existence of cracks and Ag-intrusion in the joined region.

  • Superconducting joints between Bi-2223/Ag tapes are fabricated by a press & reaction anneal and a multiple press & anneal. The silver sheath was mechanically or chemically removed from one side of each tape without altering the superconducting core. The exposed superconducting core of the two tapes were brought into contact and pressed so as to form a lap joint. The joined tapes were then subjected to a series of different thermomechanical treatments to achieve optimum heat treatment condition. The result from transport measurements shows that critical current ($I_c$) transmitting through joined area reaches 9A, approximately 60% of the current capacity of the tapes themselves. The critical current through joined area was improved by repeated press and reaction annealing. Measurements of the current-voltage relationship were made with several configuration of the voltage probes to characterize the critical current variation and I-V curve along the joint. Also discussed are microstructural aspects of the superconducting joint.

  • Bi-2223/Ag superconducting wires have been mainly prepared by a powder-in-tube method. The drawing and the rolling are main processes to increase the core density and wire length. In the fabrication of long wire, especially, the drawing should be precisely controlled to assure the filament homogeneity. In this paper, the influences of drawing die angle, bearing length and reduction ratio on the sausaging and the critical current density of the wire are investigated. Single cored and multi-filamentary wires are fabricated by PIT method with different conditions. The core densities and sausaging in the wires are investigated and are discussed regarding their relationship to the I$_{c}$. It was made clear that the geometry of drawing die is sensitively dependent on the sausaging. The improvement of I$_{c}$ was achieved by reducing the die angle and high core density.ity.

  • In this study, we estimate the transport current loss of Bi-2223/Ag tapes with non-uniform current distribution. The conductor was consisted of three Bi-2223/Ag tapes and the each tapes were attached in parallel. The loss of conductor was investigated both numerical and experimental methods. The numerical code to predict ac loss was developed, and finite element method was introduced. It contained intrinsic properties of superconducting tape, which was obtained from nonlinear current voltage relation with external magnetic field and its orientation. Two results were compared and discussed. They showed good agreements with each other.

  • When high temperature superconducting tapes is fabricated using the PIT (Powder In Tube) method, the length of HTS tapes is increased more than 500 ${\sim}$ 1,000 times of initial powder packed billet. On mechanical processing, heterogeneous properties between the ceramic superconducting core and Ag/Ag alloy sheath occur the non-uniformity deformation as like sausaging that deteriorate the critical current properties of HTS tapes. In this study, we investigated the workability of Bi-2223/Ag/Ag alloy sheath tapes fabricated by the PIT method involving a number of different mechanical processes, multi drawing and rolling. In order to obtain the high critical current density and high uniformity of Bi-2223/Ag sheath tapes, the influences of powder packing density, drawing die angle and rolling parameters were studied. We found that the roll diameter is an important variable in the rolling process, as critical current of tapes rolled using 250 mm rolls was higher than that using 150 mm rolls.

  • For the purpose of standardization of the critical current measurement, it is meaningful to describe how $I_{c}$ will behave as the stress/strain level changes. In this study, strain dependencies of the critical current $I_{c}$ in Ag-alloy sheathed multifilamentary Bi(2212) and Bi(2223) superconducting tapes were evaluated at 77K, 0T. The external reinforcement was accomplished by soldering AgMgNi alloy tapes onto single or both sides of the sample. With the external reinforcement to the Bi(2212) tape, the strength of the tapes increased but the critical current at the strain free state, $I_{c0}$ decreased in some cases. The strain for onset of the $I_{c}$ degradation, $\varepsilon$$_{\irr}$, increased with an increase of the reinforcing volume and then saturated to a certain value. The effect of external reinforcement on the degradation of $I_{c}$ due to the bending strain in the Bi(2223) tape was also examined. Contrary to the expectation, it showed a significant $I_{c}$ degradation even at a small strain of 0.4 %. The observations of damage morphologies gave a good explanation to the $I_{c}$ behavior.c/ behavior.r.
