Algorithms for Determining Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA)'s Official Typhoon Best Tracks in the National Typhoon Center (기상청 국가태풍센터의 태풍 베스트트랙 생산체계 소개)

  • The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) National Typhoon Center has been officially releasing reanalyzed best tracks for the previous year's northwest Pacific typhoons since 2015. However, while most typhoon researchers are aware of the data released by other institutions, such as the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) Tokyo, they are often unfamiliar with the KMA products. In this technical note, we describe the best track data released by KMA, and the algorithms that are used to generate it. We hope that this will increase the usefulness of the data to typhoon researchers, and help raise awareness of the product. The best track reanalysis process is initiated when the necessary database of observations-which includes satellite, synoptic, ocean, and radar observations-has become complete for the required year. Three categories of best track information-position (track), intensity (maximum sustained winds and central pressure), and size (radii of high-wind areas)-are estimated based on scientific processes. These estimates are then examined by typhoon forecasters and other internal and external experts, and issued as an official product when final approval has been given.

Suggestion for Train Vibration Equations based on Change in Track System (궤도구조 변경에 따른 열차 진동 추정식 제안)

  • This research estimated decreased vibration level as quantitative according to change of track system on Seoul Subway Line No. 1 from existing ballasted track system(Pandrol type clip) to concrete track system(Youbgdan type isolation rubber clip). Following change to concrete system, vibration level at tunnel floor decreased between 4-8dB(V). Vibration equations suggested in this paper consider the velocity of train and can estimate quantitative vibration response. These are divided by ultimate limit state($\beta$=0), serviceability limit state($\beta$=1.28) and safety state($\beta$=3), respectively. The reliability index, $\beta$=0, means 50% data line obtained by least squares best-fit line. The reliability index $\beta$=1.28 and 3 represent boundaries below 90% and 99.9% respectively.

Estimation on the Radius of Maximum Wind Speed using RSMC Best Track Data (RSMC 최적경로 자료를 이용한 태풍의 최대풍속반경 산정)

  • Typhoon simulation method is widely used to estimate sea surface wind speeds during the typhoon periods. Holland (1980) model has been regarded to provide relatively better results for observed wind data. JTWC or RSMC best track data are available for typhoon modeling, but these data show slightly different because the data generation process are different. In this paper, a Newton-Raphson method is used to solve the two nonlinear equations based on the Holland model that is formed by the two typhoon parameters, i.e. the longest radius of 25 m/s and 15 m/s wind speeds, respectively. The solution is the radius of maximum wind speed which is of importance for typhoon modeling. This method is based on the typhoon wind profile of JMA and it shows that Holland model appears to fit better the characteristics of typhoons on the temporal and spatial changes than that of the other models. In case of using RSMC best track data, the method suggested in this study shows better and more reasonable results for the estimation of radius of maximum wind speed because the consistency of the input data is assured.

Evaluation of the Intensity Predictability of the Numerical Models for Typhoons in 2013 (2013년 태풍에 대한 수치모델들의 강도 예측성 평가)

  • An assessment of typhoon intensity predictability of numerical models was conducted to develop the typhoon intensity forecast guidance comparing with the RSMC-Tokyo best track data. Root mean square error, box plot analysis and time series of wind speed comparison were performed to evaluate the each model error level. One of noticeable fact is that all models have a trend of error increase as typhoon becomes stronger and the Global Forecast System showed the best performance among the models. In the detailed analysis in two typhoon cases [Danas (1324) and Haiyan (1330)], GFS showed good performance in maximum wind speed and intensity trend in the best track, however it could not simulate well the rapid intensity increasing period. On the other hand, ECMWF and Hurricane-WRF overestimated the typhoon intensity but simulated track trend well.

  • The characteristics of the typhoon's extratropical transition (ET) over the western North Pacific area were investigated using the cyclone phase space (CPS) diagram method suggested by Hart (2003). The data used in this study were the global data assimilation prediction system (GDAPS) and NCEP data set. The number of typhoons selected were 75 cases during 2002 to 2007, and the three parameters were analyzed : the motion relative thickness asymmetry of the storm (B), the upper thermal wind shear and the lower thermal wind shear. Comparing the best-track data provided by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center /Tokyo, the time of the ET based on CPS was 2~6 hours earlier than the best-track data. And it was shown that the 400- km and 30 kt wind radius of storm for the CPS method were better agreement than the previous suggested radius 500- km.

Numerical Simulation of Storm Surge and Wave due to Typhoon Kong-Rey of 2018 (2018년 태풍 콩레이에 대한 폭풍해일과 파랑 수치모의)

  • Numerical simulations of the storm surge and waves induced by the Typhoon Kong-Rey incident on the south coast of Korea in 2018 are conducted using the JMA-MSM weather field provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbours along the south-east coast. For the waves occurring coincidentally with the storm surges the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys operated by the KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency) and the KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration), and the data observed at AWAC stations of the KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology). Additional simulations are also performed based on the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by the JTWC (Joint Typhoon Warning Center) of the United States, and the results are compared and analyzed. Based on the results of this study it is found that the reliable weather fields are essential for the accurate simulation of storm surges and waves.

For the waves occurring coincidentally with the storm surges the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys operated by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency and the Korea Meteorological Administration. Additional simulations are also performed based on the pressure and wind fields obtained using the best track information provided by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and the calculated results are compared and analyzed. The waves and storm surges calculated using JMA-MSM wether field agree well with the observations because of the better reflection of the topography and the pre-background weather field. On the other hand, the calculated results based on the weather fields produced using the JTWC best track information show some limitations of the general trend of the variations of wave and surge heights. Based on the results of this study it is found that the reliable weather fields are essential for the accurate simulation of storm surges and waves.

Improvement of a Detecting Algorithm for Geometric Center of Typhoon using Weather Radar Data (레이더 자료를 이용한 기하학적 태풍중심 탐지 기법 개선)

  • The automatic algorithm optimized for the Korean Peninsula was developed to detect and track the center of typhoon based on a geometrical method using high-resolution retrieved WISSDOM (WInd Syntheses System using DOppler Measurements) wind and reflectivity data. This algorithm analyzes the center of typhoon by detecting the geometric circular structure of the typhoon's eye in radar reflectivity and vorticity 2D field data. For optimizing the algorithm, the main factors of the algorithm were selected and the optimal thresholds were determined through sensitivity experiments for each factor. The center of typhoon was detected for 5 typhoon cases that approached or landed on Korean Peninsula. The performance was verified by comparing and analyzing from the best track of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The detection rate for vorticity use was 15% higher on average than that for reflectivity use. The detection rate for vorticity use was up to 90% for DIANMU case in 2010. The difference between the detected locations and best tracks of KMA was 0.2° on average when using reflectivity and vorticity. After the optimization, the detection rate was improved overall, especially the detection rate more increased when using reflectivity than using vorticity. And the difference of location was reduced to 0.18° on average, increasing the accuracy.

Analysis of Reliability of Weather Fields for Typhoon Sanba (1216) (태풍 기상장의 신뢰도 분석: 태풍 산바(1216))

The calculated surge heights are compared with the time history observed at harbors along the coasts of Korea. For the waves the calculated significant wave heights are compared with the data measured using the wave buoys and the underwater pressure type wave gauge. As a result the JMA-MSM and the NCEP-CFSR weather fields give the highest reliability. The ECMWF-ERA5 gives in general surge and wave heights weaker than the measured. The ECMWF-ERA5, however, reproduces the best convergence belt formed in front of the typhoon. The weather field obtained using JTWC best track information gives the worst agreement.

Rotor Track and Balance of a Helicopter Rotor System Using Modern Global Optimization Schemes (최신의 전역 최적화 기법에 기반한 헬리콥터 동적 밸런싱 구현에 관한 연구)

  • This work aims at developing a RTB (Rotor Track and Balance) system to alleviate imbalances originating from various sources encountered during blade manufacturing process and environmental factors. The analytical RTB model is determined based on the linear regression analysis to relate the RTB adjustment parameters and their track and vibration results. The model is validated using the flight test data of a full helicopter. It is demonstrated that the linearized model has been correlated well with the test data. A hybrid optimization problem is formulated to find the best solution of the RTB adjustment parameters using the genetic algorithm combined with the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm. The optimization results reveal that both track deviations and vibration levels under various flight conditions become decreased within the allowable tolerances.
