  • Many vibrating mechanical systems from the real life are modeled as combined dynamical systems consisting of beams to which spring-mass secondary systems are attached. In most of the publications on this topic, masses of the helical springs are neglected. In a paper (Cha et al. 2008) published recently, the eigencharacteristics of an arbitrary supported Bernoulli-Euler beam with multiple in-span helical spring-mass systems were determined via the solution of the established eigenvalue problem, where the springs were modeled as axially vibrating rods. In the present article, the authors used the assumed modes method in the usual sense and obtained the equations of motion from Lagrange Equations and arrived at a generalized eigenvalue problem after applying a Galerkin procedure. The aim of the present paper is simply to show that one can arrive at the corresponding generalized eigenvalue problem by following a quite different way, namely, by using the so-called "characteristic force" method. Further, parametric investigations are carried out for two representative types of supporting conditions of the bending beam.

  • Tuned vibration control in aeroelasticity of slender wood bridges is treated in present paper. The approach suggested takes into account multiple functions in aeroelastic analysis and flutter of slender wood bridges subjected to laminar and turbulent wind flow. Tuned vibration control approach is presented with application on actual bridge. Some results obtained are discussed.

  • An inverse approach is presented for calculating the flexibility coefficient of open-side cracks in the cross sectional of beams. The cracked cross section is treated as a massless rotational spring which connects two segments of the beam. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the differential equation governing the forced vibration of each segment of the beam is written. By using a mathematical manipulation the time dependent differential equations are transformed into the static substitutes. The crack characteristics are then introduced to the solution of the differential equations via the boundary conditions. By having the time history of transverse response of an arbitrary location along the beam, the flexibility coefficient of crack is calculated. The method is applied for some cracked beams with solid rectangular cross sections and the results obtained are compared with the available data in literature. The comparison indicates that the predictions of the proposed method are in good agreement with the reported data. The procedure is quite general so as to it can be applicable for both single-side crack and double-side crack analogously. Hence, it is also applied for some test beams with double-side cracks.

  • Movie ratings are crucial for recommendation engines that track the behavior of all users and utilize the information to suggest items the users might like. It is intuitively appealing that information about the viewing preferences in terms of movie genres is sufficient for predicting a genre of an unlabeled movie. In order to predict movie genres, we treat ratings as a feature vector, apply a Bernoulli event model to estimate the likelihood of a movie being assigned a certain genre, and evaluate the posterior probability of the genre of a given movie by using the Bayes rule. The goal of the proposed technique is to efficiently use movie ratings for the task of predicting movie genres. In our approach, we attempted to answer the question: "Given the set of users who watched a movie, is it possible to predict the genre of a movie on the basis of its ratings?" The simulation results with MovieLens 1M data demonstrated the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed technique, achieving an 83.8% prediction rate for exact prediction and 84.8% when including correlated genres.

  • In recent years, it becomes a very important issue to consider the mechanical systems such as high-speed vehicles and railway trains moving on elastic beam structures. In this paper, a general approach, which can predict the dynamic behavior of constrained mechanical system and elastic beam structure, is proposed. Also, various supporting conditions of a foundation support are considered for the elastic beam structures. The elastic structure is assumed to be a nonuniform and linear Bernoulli-Euler beam with proportional damping effect. Combined Differential-Algebraic Equations of motion are derived using multibody dynamics theory and Finite Element Method. The proposed equations of motion can be solved numerically using generalizd coordinate partitioning method and Predictor-Corrector algorithm, which is an implicit multi-step integration method.

  • In this paper, we investigate the free vibration of axially loaded non-uniform Rayleigh cantilever beams. The Rayleigh beams account for the rotary inertia effect which is ignored in Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Using an inverse problem approach we show, that for certain polynomial variations of the mass per unit length and the flexural stiffness, there exists a fundamental closed form solution to the fourth order governing differential equation for Rayleigh beams. The derived property variation can serve as test functions for numerical methods. For the rotating beam case, the results have been compared with those derived using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory.

  • The quadratic B-spline finite element method yields mass and stiffness matrices which are half the size of matrices obtained by the conventional finite element method. We solve the free vibration problem of a rotating Rayleigh beam using the quadratic B-spline finite element method. Rayleigh beam theory includes the rotary inertia effects in addition to the Euler-Bernoulli theory assumptions and presents a good mathematical model for rotating beams. Galerkin's approach is used to obtain the weak form which yields a system of symmetric matrices. Results obtained for the natural frequencies at different rotating speeds show an accurate match with the published results. A comparison with Euler-Bernoulli beam is done to decipher the variations in higher modes of the Rayleigh beam due to the slenderness ratio. The results are obtained for different values of non-uniform parameter ($\bar{n}$).

  • This paper deals with frequency analysis of Euler-Bernoulli beams carrying an arbitrary number of Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic dampers, subjected to harmonic loads. Multiple external/internal dampers occurring at the same position along the beam axis, modeling external damping devices and internal damping due to damage or imperfect connections, are considered. The challenge is to handle simultaneous discontinuities of the response, in particular bending-moment/rotation discontinuities at the location of external/internal rotational dampers, shear-force/deflection discontinuities at the location of external/internal translational dampers. Following a generalized function approach, the paper will show that exact closed-form expressions of the frequency response under point/polynomial loads can readily be derived, for any number of dampers. Also, the exact dynamic stiffness matrix and load vector of the beam will be built in a closed analytical form, to be used in a standard assemblage procedure for exact frequency response analysis of frames.
