지중 열교환기용 뒤채움재로서 흑연을 첨가한 벤토나이트 그라우트재의 열전도도 및 점도 특성 (Thermal conductivity and viscosity of graphite-added bentonite grout for backfilling ground heat exchanger)

  • Bentonite-based grouting has been usually used for sealing a borehole installed for a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger in a geothermal heat pump system (GHP) because of its high swelling potential and low hydraulic conductivity. The bentonite-based grout, however, has relatively lower thermal conductivity than that of ground formation. Accordingly, it is common to add some additives such as silica sand into the bentonite-based grout for enhancing heat transfer. In this study, graphite is adapted to substitute silica sand as an addictive because graphite has very high thermal conductivity. The effect of graphite on the thermal conductivity of bentonite-based grouts has been quantitatively evaluated for seven bentonite grouts from different product sources. In addition, the viscosity of graphite-added bentonite grout was measured to evaluate the field pumpability of the grout.

칼슘 벤토나이트-모래 혼합차수재의 투수 및 구조 특성에 관한 연구 (A study on the Evaluation of Permeability and Structure for Calcium Bentonite-Sand Mixtures)

  • 본 연구에서는 칼슘 벤토나이트를 차수재로 활용하기 위해 칼슘 벤토나이트-모래 혼합물의 투수특성 및 구조를 평가하였다. 본 연구에서는 칼슘 벤토나이트와 모래에 대한 기본적인 물리 화학적 특성 분석, 다짐시험, 투수시험 및 전자주사현미경 분석(SEM)을 진행하였다. 칼슘 벤토나이트의 혼합 비율이 증가함에 따라 칼슘 벤토나이트-모래 혼합물의 건조 밀도, 투수계수는 낮아지고 최적함수비는 증가하였다. 특히, 전자주사현미경 분석은 칼슘 벤토나이트의 비율이 증가함에 따라 칼슘 벤토나이트 내 몬모릴로나이트의 면적이 증가하는 것을 확인하였다. 결론적으로, 칼슘 벤토나이트의 혼합비가 40% 이상일 때 매립시설의 차수재 조건($1.0{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$ 이하)을 만족하였다. 본 연구는 차수재로 칼슘 벤토나이트의 이해도를 향상시킬 수 있다. 칼슘 벤토나이트는 40% 이상 혼합 시 나트륨 벤토나이트 7%와 비슷한 투수 특성을 나타낸다. 따라서 칼슘 벤토나이트는 차수재로써 활용이 가능하다.

  • Compressibility and permeability properties are the most important input parameters necessary to assess the suitability of core materials in seepage control system construction. To achieve this objective, an experimental investigation was conducted in the laboratory. For the bentonite-soil/sand mixes, consolidation and permeability tests were carried out in the conventional consolidation cell, 6Omm in diameter and 2Omm in height, was modified to perform a falling head type permeability test. From the results, the normalized relationship with respect to void ratio at liquid-limit state $(e_L)$, and the changes of compressibility and permeability for various bentonite-soil/sand mixes were presented. This approach will be helpful in proportioning mixes and predicting corresponding changes in engineering behavior. And it is possible to proportion a mix to arrive at the required compressibility without affecting the permeability.

염분이 모래와 벤토나이트 혼합토의 응력 변형에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Sodium Chloride on Stress-Deformation of Sand Bentonite Mixture)

  • 이 연구에서는 화학액으로서 해안가에서 쉽게 영향 받는 염분을 사용하였다. 염분 용액으로 포화된 모래 벤토나이트 혼합토를 사용하여 압밀 비배수 삼축압축 시험을 실시하였다. 변형과 강도정수를 삼축압축시험을 통하여 구속응력과 염수의 농도 변화에 따라 구하였다. 실험 결과 영수로 포화된 흙과 벤토나이트의 점착력은 염수의 농도가 증가함에 따라 증가하며 내부마찰각은 변화가 없고 탄성계수는 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • This paper concerns the measurement of thermal conductivity of grouting materials for ground loop heat exchanger. A thermal conductivity meter, QTM-500 based on modified transient hot wire method was used to measure the thermal conductivity of neat bentonite and mixtures of bentonite and various additives. Relative to the total mixture mass, as the percent additive was increased the mixture thermal conductivity increased. For the bentonite-silica sand mixtures, the higher density of the sand particles resulted in much higher mixture thermal conductivity. The quartzite and silica sands produced the largest increases in mixture thermal conductivity, while common masonry and limestone sands produced lower thermal conductivity increases.

  • Remediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated organics, nitro aromatics, and heavy metals using zero valent iron (ZVI) filings has paid considerable attention in recent years. When the contaminants of high concentration leaked abundantly in subsurface environment, permeable reactive barrier technology using iron filing is taken a long time for the remediation of contaminated groundwater, The problem of contaminant shock is able to be solved using surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium, HDTMA) modified bentonite (SMB) as immobilizing material. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to develop the combined remediation technology using conventional permeable reactive and immobilizing barrier for the enhanced decontamination of chlorinated compounds. Four column experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the mixed reactive materials with Ottawa sand, iron filing, and HDTMA-bentonite for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal under controlled groundwater flow conditions. TCE reduction rates with sand/iron filing/HDTMA-bentonite were highest among four column due to dechlorination of TCE by iron filing and sorption of TCE by SMB.

  • To obtain the physical properties of grout materials, that is the thermal conductivity and viscosity, which are used for backfilling ground heat exchangers, nine bentonite grouts and cement grouts being adapted in the United State have been considered in this study. The bentonite grouts show that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the content of bentonite or filler (silica sand). The saturated cement grouts appear to possess much higher thermal conductivity than the saturated bentonite grouts, and the reduction of thermal conductivity in the cement grouts after drying specimens is less than the case of the bentonite grouts. To investigate the performance of cement grouts, fifteen samples were prepared by varying the water/cement ratio and the amount of sand and bentonite added into the cement mortar. Maintaining the moisture content of grouts is a crucial factor in enhancing the efficiency of ground heat exchangers.

  • Tensile strength of soil is one of the important strength parameters in geotechnical engineering. The importance of the tensile strength of soil has been pointed out and given considerable attention in many highway pavements and earthfill dams. Recently, one of tensile strength problems, cracking failure of clay liners which is related to leakage of polluted water has been reported. Thus, the tensile strength of compacted sand-bentonite mixtures, which are used widely in the landfill construction site as clay liners was measured by Improved Unconfined Penetration (IUP) test. In addition, to find out the effects of contamination levels of water on the tensile strength and desiccation crack pattern, different pH levels of water were used for making specimens prepared with three different mixing contents of bentonite.

공학규모 벤토나이트-모래 완충재 블록의 성형특성 및 열전도도 평가 (Evaluation for the Manufacturing Characteristics and Thermal Conductivity of Engineering Scale Bentonite-Sand Buffer Blocks)

  • 본 연구에서는 공학규모 벤토나이트-모래 완충재 블록의 성형특성을 분석하기 위해 플롯팅 다이(floating die) 방식의 프레스 압력에 따른 소요 밀도 관계 및 완충재 내 밀도분포 편차에 대한 균질도를 평가하였다. 또한 벤토나이트-모래 완충재의 열전도도 성능향상 수준을 분석하기 위해 최적함수비 조건에서 열전도도를 측정하고, 순수 벤토나이트 완충재의 열전도도와 비교하였다. 연구 결과 프레스 압력이 400kg/cm2 이상의 조건에서 건조밀도 표준편차가 0.011로 감소하고 균질한 밀도분포를 나타내는 것으로 확인되었다. 열전도도 측정 결과 프레스 압력이 400, 600kg/cm2일 때의 최적함수비 조건에서 각각 1.345, 1.261W/(m·K)으로 측정되었으며, 이는 순수 벤토나이트 완충재와 비교했을 때 각각 16.1, 11.0% 상승한 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구 결과를 기반으로 공학규모의 균질한 벤토나이트-모래 완충재 블록 제작을 위한 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Shear strength behavior of crude oil contaminated sand-concrete interface

  • A laboratory investigation into crude oil contaminated sand-concrete interface behavior is performed. The interface tests were carried out through a direct shear apparatus. Pure sand and sand-bentonite mixture with different crude oil contents and three concrete surfaces of different textures (smooth, semi-rough, and rough) were examined. The experimental results showed that the concrete surface texture is an effective factor in soil-concrete interface shear strength. The interface shear strength of the rough concrete surface was found higher than smooth and semi-rough concrete surfaces. In addition to the texture, the normal stress and the crude oil content also play important roles in interface shear strength. Moreover, the friction angle decreases with increasing crude oil content due to increase of oil concentration in soil and it increases with increasing interface roughness.
