This study presents the physical and engineering characteristics of soil-bentonite admixed liner in I landfill. Main focus was the hydraulic conductivity of compacted soil-bentonite admixed and mechanisms governing low permeable properties of the admixed liner. Laboratory and field tests such as compaction, hydraulic conductivity, density, water content for the soil-bentonite admixed liner were carried out. Quality control criteria for the best construction of the soil-bentonite admixed liner was suggested through laboratory and field test results.
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a mixture of bentonite and illite as feed additives on the growth performance and litter quality of 90 Pekin ducks. The ducks were individually weighed and randomly divided into two treatments (control and 1% combination of silicate minerals), with three replicate pens per treatment, and 15 ducks per pen. Growth performance was not significantly affected (p>0.05) by the combination of bentonite and illite, but a trend of increased growth performance was observed in the control groups. Total nitrogen content and pH in the litter decreased following supplementation with the combination of bentonite and illite (p<0.05) when compared with the control group. This data indicates that the dietary supplementation with the combination of bentonite and illite (1% level) has no positive effect on the growth performance and litter quality of Pekin ducks.
A study has been made of the Korean bentonite aqueous suspension contrast with American bentonite by means of XRD IR swelling, gel formation and rheogram at various conditions such as concentration, temperature and pH. The Korean bentonite was identified as montmorillonite clay containig a small proprotion of crystoballite and mordenite, and its swelling power were acceptable for requirements of Korean pharmacopeia regulations though its values were not satisfied. Korean bentonite swelled to 10 times and American one did to 15 times compared to its bulkiness of powder. The rheogram of Korean bentonite suspension reveals bulged pseudoplatic flow with yield value at higher concentration and pseudoplastic flow without yield value at lower concentration. The higher the concentration, the greater were the apparent viscosity and hysteresis loop. Korean bentonite suspension showed insignificant temperature dependence on both apparent viscosity and hysteresis loop and it was more temperature dependent on viscosity but less on hysteresis loop than those of American sample. The pH dependence was so high on viscosity that apparent minimum value was near pH 7 and maximum value at pH 3 or 7. The hysteresis loop appeared minimum over the pH range 5-7 and maximum near pH 3 or 11. The Korean bentonite was inferior to the American bentonite in swelling volume, gel formation, thioxotropy, however, it would be possible to improve the quality of Korean bentonite by developing the method of purification for bentonite clay.

Recently Bentonite mat is applied various structure : External waterproofing for underground structure, A reclaimed land, Artificial lake, Large-scaled civil structure, etc. With these various structure environment, water quality for application of Bentonite Mat affects watertightness. Specially spot with a large quantity of Chloride ion like salt water, degree of watertightness revelation is evaluated and applied. In this study, it is a main goal to investigate watertightness of Bentonite Mat with distilled water and salt water dissolved chloride ion Contents 0.88%. The result of this paper is as follows. 1) Water permeability coefficient of Bentonite Mat : distilled water(1.21$\times$10$^{-9}$cm/sec), salt water(3.12$\times$10$^{-7}$cm/sec). 2) Variation of thickness : distilled water(187%), salt water(108%). 3) Swelling ratio : distilled water(1500%), salt water(350%).
This study has been conducted to identify physico-chemical and clay mineralogical characteristics of bentonites produced in Korea for the purpose of finding good quality bentonite for agricultural ure. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Bentonites are mainly composed of montmorillonite developed from tuffs in a lava flow. 2. Chemical properties of bentonites are: pH in $H_2O$(1:1), 7:cation exchange capacity, 60-96me/100g; content of $SiO_2$, 54-72%; ratio of $SiO_2$ to $Al_2O_3$, 4.1-10.0;oven dry loss of $H_2O$ is higher than the ingnition loss of $H_2O$. 3. The x-ray diffrection patterns of powder bentonites show peaks at $14-15{\AA}$, $4.4{\AA}$, and $2.5{\AA}$, and that of swellen one show $17{\AA}$ when treated with ethylene glycol. 4. Distribution areas of the good quality bentonites were (1) Dogu-Dong, Donghae-Myeon, Yeonil-Gun, Gyeongsangbug-Do (2) Hamyeon-Ri, Yangnam-Myeon, Weolseong-Gun, Gyeongsanbug-Do. (3) Joam-Ri, Gangdong-Myeon, Weolseong-Gun, Gyeongsangbug-Do. (4) Sanha-Ri, Gangdong-Myeon, Ulju-Gun, Gyeongsangnam-Do. (5) Sinhyeon-Ri, Gangdong-Myeon, Ulju-Gun, Gyeongsangnam-Do. A study was conducted to determine the dietary effects of a clay mineral (sodium bentonite, NaB) on manure gas emission, health, production, and meat characteristics of Hanwoo steers. Two diets fed to steers included a control diet (concentrate mix and rice straw) and a treatment diet (control diet+1.0% clay mineral/concentrate mix). Dietary NaB addition considerably reduced concentrations of gases ($H_2S$, $SO_2$ and $NH_3$) in the manure of Hanwoo steers. Growing steers fed NaB had similar blood profiles with the exception of lower (p<0.05) concentrations of blood alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase. Dietary NaB addition tended to increase (p = 0.10) live weight by 30 kg at slaughtering and did not affect carcass yield and quality traits. Dietary NaB addition increased concentrations of P (p<0.01), Mg (p<0.01), Na (p<0.01), Zn (p<0.005), K (p = 0.08), Fe (p = 0.08) and Cu (p = 0.07) in the longissimus muscle compared to the control but did not affect (p>0.05) fatty acid composition. The study demonstrated that the dietary addition of a clay mineral could be effective in improving mineral bioavailability to Hanwoo steers, which could be one of the reasons for their improved performance.

We performed the geotechnical experiments of the hydraulic conductivity and compressive strength test with the stabilized soil in the laboratory, proved that it is useful to use the stabilized soil as an alternative for natural clay soil. Also, for mixing adding materials in the stabilized soil, it was determined that 1) the optimal mixing ratio of cement : bentonite : stabilizing agent was 90:60:1 of mass ratio(kg) for 1㎥ with soil, 2) it was also possible to use low quality bentonite(B\circled2) classified by swelling grade because of little difference from results of the hydraulic conductivity and compressive strength test with high quality bentonite(B\circled1). According to the results of the fixation ability of heavy metals(Pb$^{2+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, Cd$^{2+}$, Zn$^{2+}$) with soil and additives, authors can conclude that the higher pH condition had the more removal efficiency of heavy metals. B\circled1 and cement had especially high removal efficiency of heavy metals in a whole pH because of high alkalinity.alinity.

As the size of our industry and population inclose, the byproducts such as municipal solid wastes, industrial wastes are in the increasing phase. The treatment of such things is rising as a social problem. Today, the final disposal of these wastes depends mostly on the landfill, and the sanitary landfill is required and designed for preventing soil and groundwater contamination. Clays have been used for a liner material of a sanitary landfill, however, the high quality clay is hard to come by and quite expensive as a lining material in our country. Using the waste lime produced abundantly every year from chemical processes was studied here, made from the proper mixing of the bentonite and the waste lime meets the regulations from the USEPA. The soil property index tests (sieve analysis, specific gravity test Atterberg limit test) were performed, and at last to confirm the sorption characteristics of the bentonite and the waste lime the sorption isotherm equilibrium test and the sorption isotherm were performed with Toluene and Ethylbenzene which are the main components of the leachate from the landfill.
This paper is focused on an experimental study in order to investigate the utilization of sewage sludge ash as the cover and liner materials for the waste disposal landfill or as construction materials. A series of tests were performed to evaluate the basic properties, compaction, compressive strength, consolidation, permeability, and CBR of sewage ash. Specially, clay bricks were made as increasing replacement ratio of sewage ash (such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30%). And tests were fulfilled for its quality. Bentonite and lime were used as the additives to improve permeability properties of sewage sludge ash. As a result of tests, it was shown that the permeability coefficient decreases as increasing bentonite content and the percentage of bentonite was roughly needed 20% to keep the permeability coefficient below $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$. The results of unconfined compression tests show that sewage ash meets the criteria of the unconfined compression strength for cover material. It was shown that the compressive strength decreases as increasing the replacement ratio of sewage sludge ash and the maximum replacement ratio of sewage sludge ash to satisfy the quality standards of the third degree bricks was about 15%.
In this study, the construction method of new underground continuos impervious wall that the bentonite slurry keeps the stability of excavated trench and the mixture of cement and bentonite plays a role as a constituent of impervious wall in the trench. The merit of homogeneity of the method so called as a cement-bentonite slurry wall enables to accurately make an estimation of hydraulic conductivity of the walls compared with that by other general grouting methods and to verify their waterproof efficiency without difficulty at the design stage. The use of cement-bentonite slurry walls for the containment of groundwater flow has also proven a cost-effective impervious wall technology by employing the simple combination of construction equipments and easy and fast construction procedures. The engineering characteristics of cement-bentonite impervious wall obtained by carrying out the laboratory experiments under various conditions. This study reveals the effect of variation of constituent materials and their mixing methods (Water-Cement-Bentonite) on the engineering characteristics of a composition. Also, this study makes some recommendations on the optimum mixing ratio and mixing sequence for the best quality at the site. That is the most important factors to estimate the construction cost and design of the technique. The comparison is lastly made to evaluate the effect of ordinary Portland and blast furnace slag cement as a bonding material on the behavior of impervious walls.
