  • This study includes the effects of shielding gas types and flow rate on Nd:YAG Laser weldability of sintered material. The types of shielding gas were evaluated for He, Ar and N2. Bending strength, porosity rate, hardness and aspect ratio testing of laser weld are carried out to evaluated the weldability. As a results, Ar gas was showed the best welding strength even it has the most porosity content on weld metal, and depend on increases the gas flow rate, it was not only got deeper penetration depth but also showed higher bending strength. Therefore we could know that bending strength is not only affect the porosity content but also melting area.

  • This paper presents a study of the nonlinear cylindrical bending of an exponential functionally graded plate (simply called E-FG) with variable thickness. The plate is subjected to uniform pressure loading and his geometric nonlinearity is introduced in the strain-displacement equations based on Von-Karman assumptions. The material properties of functionally graded plates, except the Poisson's ratio, are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the plate in accordance with the exponential law distribution; and the solution is obtained using Hamilton's principle for constant plate thickness. In order to analyze functionally graded plate with variable thickness, a numerical solution using finite difference method is used, where parabolic variation of the plate thickness is studied. The results for E-FG plates are given in dimensionless graphical forms; and the effects of material and geometric properties on displacements and normal stresses through the thickness are determined.

  • A computerized numerical method is presented for the design and/or the investigation of RC members with general shape and material properties subjected to axial load and biaxial bending moment. Slenderness effects can also be considered with the use of the moment magnification factor. The method is based on the summation of stress result- ants on a small area of the cross section which enables the determination of strength interaction diagrams, load contours and moment-curvature relationships for the general section. Thus the presented program HYCOL can be used as a direct tool for design and/or investigation of RC members with general shape subjected to biaxial bending. The accuracy of program HYCOL is established by comparison with experimental results.

  • This paper provides the first known flexural vibration data for thick (Mindlin) rectangular plates having V-notches. The V-notch has bending moment and shear force singularities at its sharp corner due to the transverse vibratory bending motion. Based upon Mindlin plate theory, in which transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia effects are considered, the Ritz procedure is employed with a hybrid set of admissible functions assumed for the rotational and transverse vibratory displacements. This set includes: (1) a mathematically complete set of admissible algebraic-trigonometric polynomials which guarantee convergence to exact frequencies as sufficient terms are retained; and (2) an admissible set of Mindlin corner functions which account for the bending moment and shear force singularities at the sharp corner of the V-notch. Extensive convergence studies demonstrate the necessity of adding the Mindlin corner functions to achieve accurate frequencies for rectangular plates having sharp V-notches.

  • Bending behaviors of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams under repeated loading were investigated experimentally. A total of twenty test specimens, including four non-corrosion and sixteen corrosion reinforced concrete beams, were prepared and tested. A numerical model for flexural and cracking behaviors of the beam under repeated loading was also developed. Effects of steel corrosion on reinforced concrete beams regarding cracking, mid-span deflection, stiffness and bearing capacity of corroded beams were studied. The impact of corrosion on bond strength as the key factor was investigated to develop the computational model of flexural capacity. It was shown from the experimental results that the bond strength between reinforcement and concrete had increased for specimen of low corrosion levels, while this effect was changed when the corrosion level was higher. It was indicated that the bearing capacity of corrosion beam increased even at a corrosion level of about 5%.

  • In general, a fundamental structural design consideration for an automobile is the overall dynamic behavior in bending and torsion. Dynamic behavior of the automobile are mainly influenced by the structural stiffness of B.I.W.(body-in-white) and the physical property of trim components. In this paper, the modeling techniques for various trim components of middle-sized bus are presented, and the dynamic effects of the trim components on the vibration characteristics of the bus are investigated. The $1^{st}$ torsional frequency is decreased by attaching windshield and backlite to the B.I.W., but the $1^{st}$ vertical bending frequency and the $1^{st}$ lateral bending frequency are increased. The natural frequencies of the bus are decreased by attaching doors and windows. And also, the natural frequencies of the bus are large decreased by attaching seats, instrument panel etc. The study shows that the dynamic characteristics of the bus can be effectively predicted in the initial design stage.

  • This paper presents plastic limit loads of piping branch junctions with local wall thinning under combined pressure and in-plane bending, based on systematic three-dimensional finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials. An ideal branch junction without weld or reinforcement around the intersection is considered with two locations of wall thinning; one in the run pipe, and the other in the branch pipe. Based on FE results, effects of thinning geometries on plastic limit moments are quantified and simple approximations of plastic limit loads are proposed.

  • The four-point bending test is a widely used method to determine material parameters. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the flexural strength (or modulus of rupture) and the Weibull modulus of cordierite ceramic substrate by means of four-point bending tests. The strength data from experiments followed Weibull statistics. These data indicate that the fatigue effects are more severe when the substrate temperature in the peripheral region is near $200^{\circ}$. At temperatures well above $200^{\circ}C$ the available design strength can be as high as 65% as substrate's initial strength.

  • Seismic fragility curves of concrete cylindrical tanks are determined using the finite element method. Vulnerabilities including sloshing of contents, tensile cracking and compression failure of the tank wall due to bending are accounted for. Effects of wall flexibility, fixity at the base, and height-diameter ratio on the response are investigated. Tall, medium and squat tanks are considered. The dynamic analysis is implemented using the horizontal components of consistent earthquakes. The study shows that generally taller tanks are more vulnerable to all of the failure modes considered. Among the modes of failure, the bending capacity of wall was shown to be the critical design parameter.

  • Works on the strength and stiffness in the structural members are carried out widely with various material and cross-sections with ever increasing safety concerns, they are presently applied in various fields including railroad trains, air crafts and automobiles. In addition to this, problem of lighting structural members became important subject by control of exhaust gas emission, fuel economy and energy efficiency. So, Light weight of member structures is necessary for the high performance and various functions. In this study, the CFRP flat and circular member was manufactured by CFRP prepreg sheet in autoclave. Carbon FRP is an anisotropy material whose mechanical properties change with its fiber orientation angle, so this study apply to the effects of the fiber orientation angle on the bending characteristics of the member. Each CFRP flat and circle are compared by strength and stiffness.
