  • The study was to investigate and compare plants and frequency of appearing species of vegetation transect in a straight and a restoration Section of Bulgwang stream in Seoul. Some part of Bulgwang stream was restored as a closed-to-nature stream. This present study consists of two investigations, the first investigation being conducted on May and the second one on August -September 2003. Based on the analysis of the data collected from both investigations, this study classified and listed all of the plants appeared in a straight and a restoration section of the stream. The study used the Belt-transect method in order to examine and analyze discover the appearance frequency of the vegetaton transect per 200 meters. During the period of the first investigation and the second one, plants of 33 families, 73 classes, and 88 species appeared in the straight section, while plants of 36 families, 76 classes, and 90 species appeared in the restoration section. The Naturalized Index of the straight section was 22.7%, and that of the restoration section was 21.1%. As shown on the results indicating that the Urbanization Index of the straight section was 7.8%, and that of the restoration section was 7.4%, the Urbanization Index of the straight section was slightly higher than the restoration section. The results using belt-transect analysis method showed that in case of the straight section, the plants of the highest appearance frequency on the riverside were Persicaria hydropiper and Humulus japonicus. On the contrary, in the case of restoration section, the plants showing a higher appearance frequency on the riverside were identified as Salix gracilistyla, Persicaria hydropiper, Rumex crispus, and Humulus japonicus. In conclusion, there was no difference between the straight and the restoration section in the bank with regard to vegetation transect. However, a remarkable difference was found on the riverside for the Salix gracilistyla which was introduced in the restoration section.

  • To investigate the plant community structure of Chohangyoung valley in Soraksan National Park, thirty nine plots(each size was 100m$^{2}$) were set up and surveyed and to analyze the plant community characteristics of valley area and slope area, twenty five plots in five sites were set up and surveyed. According to DCA ordination techniques, the communities were six divided into community types, which were Pinus densiflora community, P. densiflora-Populus maximowiczii community, Po. maximowiczii-P. densiflora community, Po. maszimowiczii community, Fraxinus rhyuchophylla community, Quercus serrata community. Q. serrata community was only distrivuted at slope area and the others were distributied at valley area. The successional trend of six communities was not clearly inferred. Shannon's diversity was 0.9458~1.1769(unit area:500m$^{2}$), and soil acidity was pH 4.65~6.09 in surveyed areas. According to the belt-transect analysis, the dominant species of valley area were P. densiflora, Po. maximowiczii, but the dominant species of slope area was Q. serrata.

  • In order to study the successional trend and the heterogeneity of forest community, we investigated DBH frequency distribution of dominant tree species and the changes of several community indicies including ${\beta}-diversity\;({\beta}_t)$ along a belt transect in Mt. Yongam, Kwangnung Experimental Forest, which has been preserved for about 530 years. Quercus serrata, Carpinus laxiflora, and C. cordata were the three dominant species and their DBH frequency distribution showed a reverse J-shaped form, so these species seem to maintain by themselves. Dominancediversity curve had a lognormal distribution. d and H'for pooled quadrats were 0.13 and 1.09, respectively, but these indices within each quadiat varied with the range of 0.13 to 0.57 and 0.5 to 1.09, respectively. The value of ${\beta}_t$ along the belt transect ranged from 0.14 to 0.42. These results suggest that this forest community is in the stable climax stage but the components experience a heterogeneous microsuccession.

  • An invasive disturbance species has caused harm to biodiversity and ecosystem. To address the issue, identifying the characteristics of a habitat for invasive disturbance species is considered for forest management. This study analyzed a status of plant species by field survey based on belt transect method in the capital areas and established a predictive model for invasive disturbance species by logistic regression. As results of the study, the number of herb, vine, and invasive disturbance species and a canopy cover of tree would decrease from the forest edge to core areas (p<0.001). The predictive model was derived with variables of altitude, Topographic Wetness Index, distance to forest edge, and canopy cover of tree. It can be useful in estimating the presence or absence of species and predicting its spatial distribution. Further studies are needed to identify the pathway of introduction, spread, and possibility of germination for understanding the status of invasive disturbance species in more depth.

  • We have researched heterogeneity of naturalized river plant community by ${\beta}$-diversity for restoration of river community which has high diversity plant species. As a result the average of heterogeneity was 0.32(range 0.23~0.37) from the river to the inland. This value shows community turnover of species composition of plant communities 6 times. The ${\beta}$-diversity was no difference among water system of Seomjin river, Han river, Nakdong river and Geum river. The upper-river valley(0.36) was higher than lower-river valley(0.23) in each water system(p level<0.05). Multiple regressing analysis was used for look the relationship with Environmental factors as a result, it shows ${\beta}$-diversity significant on a slope. River mimetic diagram with dominant species that appear through Belt-transect painted. Dominant plant species turned 6 time in upper-river and turned about 5 time in lower-river. The result of this study suggested practical basis of planting species and planting pattern. To improve species diversity of river plant community, slope degree raise is the most important.

  • For this study, which was conducted in summer from $2006{\sim}2007$, 25 places of stream area in Korea, which were not affected by human, were selected by considering variable environmental factors. Plant surveys were performed in five qaudrats per each place of stream area(stream length=about 1km) on the basis of Braun-Blanquet(1964) and in four belt(length=20m) per each place of stream area by using belt-transect method in order to study the vegetation of the present-day potential natural state of water. In the results of the plant survey, the common plant communities in the mid-northern district(latitude$37^{\circ}37.9^{\circ}N$) were Quercus mongolica community and Fraxinus rhynchophylla community(with Quercus mongolica and Quercus aliena), and the common plant communities in the southern district(latitude$35^{\circ}35.9^{\circ}N$) were Quercus serrata community, Styrax japonica community and Quercus variabilis community. The common plant communities in the central district(latitude$36^{\circ}36.9^{\circ}N$) were Quercus serrata community, Fraxinus rhynchophylla community and Quercus aliena community, which have the middle characteristic between mid-northern and southern district. Also, in the results of correlation analysis between environmental factors and appearance of plant species in the survey places of stream area, Eco region showed the most significant correlation, but for the plan to restore flood plain, it is necessary to clarify the vegetation of potential natural stream by increasing the number of study cases considering variable environmental factors, in the future.

  • This study analyzed the actual vegetation and vegetation structure around the trails with the aim of restoring vegetation and continuous monitoring of the section between the National Astronomy Observatory and Birobong in Sobaeksan National Park. The actual vegetation was classified into 18 types, of which the largest were Quercus mongolica communities occupying the dimension of $225,337m^2$, Rhododendron schlippcubachii communities distributed around the trails on the ridge were covering 14.59%, and deciduous broadleaf forests were covering 11.06%. of the surveyed areas, respectively. In consideration of the actual vegetation, a total of 23 belt-transects were set up; 9 in Quercus mongolica communities, 3 in broadleaf deciduous forests, 2 in Taxus cuspidata communities, and 9 in damage restoration areas to take a closer look at the species diversity, species number, and individual number by community. The survey results are as follows: 9 belt-transects in Quercus mongolica communities showed their species diversity was $0.4290{\sim}1.0496$ with $7{\sim}22$ species and $115{\sim}481$ individuals. 3 belt-transects in broadleaf deciduous communities showed that species diversity was $0.6712{\sim}1.0096$ with $14{\sim}17$ species and $158{\sim}453$ individuals. 2 belt-transects in Taxus cuspidata communities showed that species diversity was $0.5413{\sim}0.9923$ with $14{\sim}15$ species and $223{\sim}406$ individuals. 8 belt-transects showed that species diversity was $0.1899{\sim}0.9217$ with $3{\sim}23$ species and $105{\sim}485$ individuals.

  • The primary succession of the pebble area in gye-bang chon, an upper stream bank of north han river, was investigated by belt transect method from July to October 1990. The stsges of bare area, herbaceous pioneer, perenial herb, woody plants and pine stand were recognized from stream bank to inland. The change of the coverage in herbaceous plants increased with developing sueccessional sere but decreaser with increment of woody plants. The species sequence cyrves vs. relative coverage were geometric in pioneer stage and graduaiiy changed to lognormal y\type as the development of forest. The species diversity was highest during then woody plants stage, probably it would to be the edge effect. The soil properties were not noticeable difference between stream side and inland side. It seems that the vegetational developement was not enough to affect soil accumulation.

  • In order to study the characteristics of vegetation structure in Gundal mountain, we investigated forest community using belt transect method at 30 sites in Gundal mountain. As the result of important value' calculation on over DBH 2cm, Pinus densiflora (56.8), Quercus mongolica (48.5), Pinus rigida(41.4), Castanea crenata (22.3), Quercus variabilis (22.3), Carpinus laxiflora (16.9), Quercus aliena (11.3), Sorbus alnifolia (8.6), and Quercus acutissima (8.5) were in the order of important value. According to the ordination analysis of Gundal mountain forest, Quercus mongolica was found in north face and high of mountain. Carpinus laxiflora was found in north face steep slope and middle of mountain. As DBH analysis, the study community will be dominated by Quercus species. The correlation between the forest community and environment factor could be thought as distinction by soil nutrition etc., but we need more study about environment factors.

  • To analyze phytosociological characteristics of the Mt. Namsan nature park, Seoul, vegetation structure of north-east and south-west slopes, competition capability among species, vegetation structures of afforested species were studied with belt-transect and quadrat methods. And management plan of each vegetational zone was proposed by the results of this study and the other previous reports. Numbers of species and individuals of south-west slope were greater than those of north-east slope. But species diversity of northeast showed stability of 1.0, while that of south-west showed instability from 0.8 to 1.3. The floristic dissimilarity coefficient between two slopes showed 70-80% in which species composition between two slopes was much different. Quercus mongolica was a dominant species at north-east slope and Pinus densiflora at south-west slope. Competition capability among major species was resulted in deciduous trees>Robinia pseudoacacia>Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa>Pinais densiflora, Quercus mongolica>deciduous trees>Pinus densiflora. Afforested vegetation at the Mt. Namsan, especially Pinus koraiensis, Abies holophylla, Picea abies, etc showed poor growth rate. The goal of the Nam-san nature park management is to conserve natural ecosystem as it is and, if necessary, to accerlerate restoration of the disturbed ecosytem to its nature by minimum energy input as possible. Management proposal was made for six vegetational management zone ; P. derasitZoru forest zone, Q. mongolica forest zone, deciduous forest zone, afforestation zone, R. pseduoacacia zone and landscape planting zone.
