Study on Continuously Variable System Using to Centrifugal Belt Pulley

  • In the case of a belt-pulley type CVT that transmits a driving force by using a variable pulley and a metal belt, slippage occurs due to transmission of power by using a belt, which results in a decrease in efficiency. Therefore, in this study, the rails were machined on the plate surface of the pulley to reduce the friction and slip between the belt and the pulley while applying the characteristics of the CVT. As the plate is rotated by the shape of the rail, a centrifugal belt pulley type continuously variable transmission system which shifts while varying the radius of rotation of the belt that transmits power is studied. Accordingly, the structure of the pulley was designed and the centrifugal belt pulley type continuously variable transmission was Manufactured. In addition, to verify the suitability of the manufactured transmission, the power transmission efficiency was monitored by establishing an interface with the controller. The structural analysis of the plate proved the suitability of the centrifugal belt pulley type continuously variable transmission.

Performance Improvement of Triangular-type V-belt Clutch (삼각벨트 클러치의 성능 향상에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to provide a direction for improving the performance of triangular-type belt clutch. The power transmission characteristics and the wear of belt were investigated for two types of pulley set theoretically and experimentally. The results of research were summarized as follows: 1) Based on the theoretical analysis for the life time of belt, the wear of belt could be reduced by increasing the sizes of driving V-pulley and tension pulley, and by decreasing the tension on V-belt. 2) The pulley set # 2 could transmit more power than the pulley set # 1 could at the same slop rate. While the slip rate was 2.36% on the pulley set # 2 at the maximum power transmission, the slip rate on the pulley set # 1 was increased up to 12.2% at the same condition. 3) From the 16 hours' fatigue test, the wear of belt used n the pulley set # 1 was observed severer than that in the pulley set#2. Also, it was found that the tensile strength of belt used in the pulley set # 2 was greater than that of belt used in the pulley set # 1.

  • This research mainly focuses on the development of sinter brazing technology for improving the process related to belt pulley made by sinter hardening. As the machine process of belt pulley takes up more than half of the total manufacturing hours, we propose changing the process to pulley groove brazed and bonded with pulley disc by applying sinter brazing to belt pulley. With the new process, the belt pulley is expected to reduce manufacturing cost to 70% of the original process by applying the sinter brazing technology; and the belt pulley bound by sinter brazing only loses 10% bonding strength compared with the original process.

  • A V belt pulley is widely used in automotive industry. More than tow pulleys in one automobile are used, such items as crankshaft, water pump, air-con compressor and power steering pump. Although the shape and usage of pulleys are very simple, the design evaluation of a pulley design is difficult because the load conditions and the installation environment are complicated. So, we formulated the design evaluation for the V belt pulley by using CAE system, which enables to develop a design automation system. By using this system, an engineer can evaluate a pulley design easily without any painstaking effort, such as consideration of the complicated loads and CAE activities. Also the system helps to accumulate the design experience of a company, which guides the optimum design based on experience.

Analysis of belt behavior for a metal V-belt CVT (금속 V-벨트 CVT의 벨트거동 해석)

  • The metal V-belt behavior of a continuously variable transmission was investigated analytically and experimentally. Numerical results showed that nondimensional belt radial displacement increased in the radial inward direction for the driven pulley, while that of the driver pulley increased for the first 90 degrees of the active are and decreased with the increasing torque load. Experimental results for the belt radial displacement were in good agreement with the theoretical results. However, the absolute magnitude of the belt radial displacement was so small that the change in the belt displacement could not be measured in the experimental range except for the inlet region of the driven pulley, where the radial inward displacement was observed due to the effect of bending moment. The speed ratio-axial force relationship derived from the belt behavior analysis also showed god agreement with the experiment.

  • The inside contact characteristics in abrasive belt drives were investigated analytically and experimentally for (1) driver pulley contact wheel and (2) driven pulley contact wheel. The concentrated contact forces in the grinding zone divided the entire belt-pulley contact are by three distinct areas and the tangential friction forces in the active areas caused the normal forces to change, which resulted in the different belt force distribution compared with those of the ordinary flat belt drives. The experimental results for the normal pressure (belt tension) distribution were in good agreement with the theoretical results.

  • The behavior of a V-belt CVT was investigated both analytically and experimentally. It was found that as the torque load increased, the belt radial displacement increased in inward radial direction for the driven pulley while the radial displacement decreased slightly and increased for the driver pulley. The relative belt displacement for the driver was negligible compared with that of the driven. The experimental results were in good accordance with the theoretical results except for the inlet and exit region of the pulley. The speed ratio-torque load-axial force relationship derived from the belt behavior analysis also showed good agreement with the experiment. It is suggested that the results of this paper can be used as basic design informations of a V-belt CVT.

  • Some trials to simulate the spinning process by which V-belt pulley is usually being manufactured are done in this study. 2D finite element analysis (FEA) for the whole process to produce a mono-typed pulley including preforming, 1st spinning, axial compression and 2nd spinning processes is carried out using the commercial code $DEFORM2D^{TM}$. The sectional shape after each process is compared with that of real product. The deformed shape obtained from the FEA, on the whole, coincides with the experimental result well, but the thickness around the bottom of the V-groove is somewhat different each other.

  • Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) consists of a driving pulley and a driven pulley joined by rubber V-belt. Each pulley consists of a fixed flange and a movable flange. The main advantages of the U with V-belt, which has been Popular in Asia, are a simple mechanism less maintenance and low cost. One of the important factors which have an influence on the performance of the CVT is change of axial distance. Base on an experiment the effects of transfer torque and speed ratio of both driving pulley and driven pulley during the alteration of axial distance were studied.

  • Orchard sprayers, wide area dusters and multipurpose control cars are flagship products of Hansung T&I Ltd. Spray pumps are one of the essential parts for these products. But conventional belt pulleys for spray pumps are heavy and expensive, and they bring down the quality as well as productivity of the end-products. Therefore, this study focuses on mold design for aluminum die casting belt pulley and mold manufacture.
