  • Objective : Several conservative treatments have been tried in peripheral facial nerve paralysis, because 80% of patients recover spontaneously. Surgical decompression may be helpful to the residual, medically intractable patients. We present here our experiences of facial nerve decompression via middle fossa approach, which seems to be one of good surgical therapeutic options for medically refractory peripheral facial nerve paralysis. Method : Three cases of medically intractable peripheral type facial paralysis were microscopically operated via middle cranial fossa approach to decompress the labyrinthine segment of the facial nerve and geniculate ganglion by searching landmarks of middle meningeal artery, greater superficial petrosal nerve and facial hiatus. Results : After operation, two cases of Bell's palsy improved substantially and one case of post-traumatic facial paralysis improved partially. Conclusion : This report is presented to describe the surgical facial nerve decompression via middle fossa for early control of peripheral type facial paralysis. Surgical decompression of edematous peripherally paralysed facial nerve could be preferred to conservative treatment in some patients although more surgical experience should be required.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial composition characteristics of elderly housing facilities in Korea, in order to refer them in establishing the basic plan for elderly housing in Korea. The case study performed in this study from October 16 to October 31 is based on ten housing facilities for the elderly in KOREA. During the site visits, the interview with the custodians, survey of the space, picture taking and diagram gathering were carried out. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The type of floor plan was classified into ㅁ type, L type, and ㅡ type. And they hadn't an outside space called a garden(courtyard). 2. The kinds of common spaces could be grouped as the space for basic living, for leisure, and for convenient living. Also it was all common that the housing facility had common diningroom laundry room once, and activity room. The type of the common spaces was categorized into three types, the centralized type where the shared space was located at the center of the housing facilities, the distributed type, depending on the degree of separation between common spaces and units, and another each building type. 3. The kinds of units was classified into studio, oneroom, one bedroom and two bedroom. 4. Elevator, safety grab bar, emergency bell, and the door handle of lever or bar type were placed in these facilities.

  • Facial palsy is commonly encountered disease in the clinic but bilateral facial palsy is known as rare disease. Type of facial nerve paralysis include unilateral, recurrent ipsilateral, recurrent alternating and bilateral simultaneous palsies. Among the types, the reported incidence of bilateral simultaneous palsy is 0.3~2% of facial paralysis patients. We experienced I case of patient with bilateral simultaneous facial palsy that was concluded as bilateral bell's palsy. Objective : The purpose of this paper is to report the patient with bilateral facial palsy, who improved by oriental medical treatment. Another purpose is to review the current literature and to differential diagnosis of bilateral facial paralysis. Methods and Results : The patient was treated by acupuncture, herb medication and self-massage on facial muscle for 14 weeks. House-brackmann grading score was improved into I/I (Rt/Lt) from IV/IV. Conclusion : Through reviewing some literatures and reports, It is concluded that bilateral facial palsy was related to many other disorders and more ominous than unilateral facial palsy. therefore, its work-up should include a complete neurologic assesment and thorough evaluation. also, we consider that bilateral Bell's palsy can improve by oriental medical treatments.

  • The purpose of this study is to present an objective basis for the entry point of a knowledge-based economy, that is used by quantitative analysis to serve as 'The Result of Wage Structure Survey' and 'Sample Design for Survey Report on Labor Conditions by Employment Type' of the Ministry of Employment & Labor. Entry criteria for a knowledge-based society, through the definition of a Bell and Toffler, was defined by the number of information workers more than the number of physical workers, and the information workers were classified by knowledge workers. To redefine the definition of Porat's typology of information workers, Korea Standard Classification of Occupation is classified by the job of knowledge, service, industry and agriculture. The result of the analysis is appeared the entry point of a knowledge-based economy by workers structural changes and annual wage structure changes has identified empirically-year 1980 the United States more than 20 years later in 2000. In addition, the economic contribution of knowledge occupation was confirmed to be the biggest by measuring the economic contribution of occupation classification in the knowledge society.

  • The use of personal mobility(PM) is increasing because of preading shared mobility, but, it causes risk of accidents and fear to pedestrians because of lack of sound. The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of the alert sound in PM and driving direction on risk perception of pedestrians, awareness on PM driver, and allowance for driving on each road. The 8 videos were produced from a pedestrian perspective, depending on the alert sound type(silent, vess, bell, voice) and direction of driving(front, back). After watching each video, participants completed surveys. There was a non-effect on the driving direction. Regardless of the alert sound type, all of the sounds reduced the risk perception. Also, the awareness of PM drivers and allowance for driving on each road were positive. This study found that PM needed an alert sound for pedestrian safety. We expect the results of the study to help improve awareness of PM and make policies and regulations.

  • Objective : To determine imaging features that may separate adamantinomatous and papillary variants of craniopharyngiomas given that tumors with adamantinomatous signature features are associated with higher recurrence rates, morbidity, and mortality. We specifically reviewed calcification on CT, T1 bright signal intensity, and cystic change on T2 weighted images for differentiating these two types. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the MRI and CT studies in 38 consecutive patients with pathologically proven craniopharyngiomas between January 2004 and February 2014 for the presence of calcification on CT scans, bright signal intensity on T1 weighted images, and cystic change on T2 weighted images. Results : Of the 38 craniopharyngiomas, 30 were adamantinomatous type and 8 were papillary type. On CT scans, calcification was present in 25 of 38 tumors. All calcified tumors were adamantinomatous type. Twenty four of 38 tumors had bright signal intensity on T1 weighted images. Of these 24 tumors, 22 (91.7%) were adamantinomatous and 2 were papillary type. Cystic change on T2 weighted images was noted in 37 of 38 tumors; only 1 tumor with papillary type did not show cystic change. Conclusion : T1 bright signal intensity and calcification on CT scans uniformly favor the adamantinomatous type over papillary type of craniopharyngioma in children. However, these findings are more variable in adults where calcification and T1 bright signal intensity occur in 70.6% and 58.8% respectively of adult adamantinomatous types of craniopharyngiomas.
